  • but it is worth noting that China does utilize administrative detention

Isn't that the same as Jails in the US which is separate from prison statistics?

Jail is where you go for the night when arrested for disorderly conduct and are released the next day.

  • In fact, what is most likely is that the Secretary of the Army authorized to add five to the quota for that competitive category to mean that no one gets negatively affected.

Those 5 new Lt Colonel positions could have been filled from those who would not have originally been considered for promotion unless spots were open. Instead they were given to Trump's friends.

Suppose you have 20 people in your office and have money for 1 manager spot. It's a lie if you create a new job, give it to your friend, and then tell the workers their was only money for 1 manager job so only one gets the promotion. You created a new manager job. There are now 2 spots and you gave 1 of them to your friend. You giving your friend a job that your employees should have gotten isn't malicious either.

  • Pushing papers is a job in the Army. It should have been given to someone that earned it.

That's what to get outraged over, not some idiots being appointed as O-5s.

Honestly this is more personable and deserving of outrage. Yes Palantir getting contracts is technically worse but that's like getting angry at inflation instead of the price of eggs. People can relate to the price of eggs. People can relate to someone being handed a senior job instead of it going to the person who served.

  • You do get promotions in the Army reserve. They are taking jobs that could have been a promotion for an experienced reservist. Even if it's a do nothing job, it could have been a do nothing job that someone earned.

  • "They’ll work on helping the Army acquire more commercial tech, though it’s not clear how conflict-of-interest issues will be enforced, given the fact that the people all work for companies that would conceivably be selling their wares to the military. "

They're doing it for the corruption. Instead of the Army picking the best technology, the CTO of Palantir will be ordering the Palantir contracts.

Next step is for Trump to fire the Generals and replace them with Maga CEO's.

  • 1987? Email address at university but didn't know anyone off campus with an email address to use it with. There was a MUD one of the computer room assistants was coding.

Real Internet started for me around 1992 working for a company funded by Vint Cerf and Bob Khan. Found Mosaic on release date in 1993 on an ftp site and my mind was blown. Every morning I'd check the Cambridge coffee pot, and Library of Congress which was digitalizing documents and uploading new files all the time, and Adam Curry's MTV which had a new article every few days or so.

  • NATO ISAF sent troops in January 2002. ISAF took command in 2003.

"Deployed in 2001 – initially under the lead of individual NATO Allies on a six-month rotational basis – ISAF was tasked, on the request of the Afghan government and under a United Nations (UN) mandate, to assist the Afghan government in maintaining security, originally in and around Kabul exclusively. NATO agreed to take command of the force in August 2003 "

2001 or 2003. Your claim that NATO never mobilized in Afghanistan is false.

  • NATO went to Afghanistan. France (part of NATO) was so against Iraq that they wouldn't let the US use its bases for refueling. American politicians officially renamed French Fries to Freedom fries because they were mad at France and other members of NATO did not support Iraq and sent no troops.

  • Vans and minivans do everything trucks and SUVs do,

And move big things. I have a minivan. But I destroyed my suspension using it to rent yard equipment. I couldn't rent many because they wouldn't fit. There's also the whole moving a muddy bush hog into my carpeted minivan that is a huge hassle.

  • If you want to go tiny you could get an Anbernic Gameboy like the RG35xxSP. They run Linux with a gaming UI on top. But it's very easy to run full desktop Linux distros on them.
