  • There was a project that I believe would have (will?) solve this problem of the platform, it is callede maidsafe. Basically the idea is that the users are always in control of their data and the services can only access it when the users want to use it. It worked by decoupling data and services and users own and control all the data they produce, meaning they can always take them elsewhere.

It also take remuneration of service/content provider into account, and all data is safely encrypted.

It's been more than 10years and the project still hasn't been released, I doubt it's ever going to come out, but the idea was really cool.

I rember I built a small website on the system when it was in early stage, and an interface for git, it was really cool to use. Anyway..

  • In France (and probably other countries too) there is an actual real group of people advocating that we can get all our nutrients from the sun and don't need to eat, they also claim they stare at the sun every day for hours. They make youtube video, and have lots of followers...

Of course they claim exactly what is said in this joke.

  • You would think so but what seems to happen with open source is: for every person with evil intent that sees the flaw and exploit it there is more persons with good intent that sees it and report/fix it.

During that time, closed source have the opposite balance, less people can fix flaws, but the same amount of evil people than open source finds them and exploit them.

  • Is it not what is already happening with our current system ? The little guy never have the ressources to fight legal battle against the big guy and enforce it's "intellectual property".

And the opposite would be true in a world without patent, small businesses could win because they would be free to reuse and adapt big businesses' ideas.

It feels very simplistic to reduce patents to "protection of the little business", in our current world they mostly protect the big ones.

Also this small example doesn't elaborate about how removing copyrights would so negatively affects our society

  • There's this youtube channel, on which someone does piano fugue improvisations, it is really good, and it has only a few thousand views

Here is an example, but there are more: https://youtu.be/YLW47a6Jk50?si=6coaJGDotT9B3JU1

There's also hours long live session during which he improvise many baroque pieces, I listen to it every now and then, and it's always a blast

  • I don't understand, the article says of the 7 million after break-even they only got 567, who got the rest of the money ? Where did it go ?

And even then, hundreds of people recieved a salary for a few years, is it not pretty good already ? To be able to sustain all these people ?

  • I'm currently living through my most stessful week of my life: About a year and a half ago, I bought a plot of land with the project of building a home there, inflation and loan rate kicked in, so I thought "alright let's wait a bit see when it stabilizes", this week I learned my plot is planned to be removed from the "buildable" area. If I don't put a building permit to the city council before this is voted my land will basically see it's value divided by 20 and I won't be able to build a house there, I put 6 years of savings into this project.. all because my gov decided that they didn't want this area to be urbanised anymore.

I have trouble sleeping and working I can't think of anything else, I also lost my appetite.
