Not always. They were often used for decoration (especially with single towers like this, like you said), but it's still a fun fact that I enjoy

Good question! It's because in this case the invaders (coming from below) will have their shields on the side the enemies are coming from. The defenders (coming from above) will have the shield facing away from their opponents

Edit: I'm not trying to be a centrist with this. I just think it (somewhat) encourages more internal strife and I'm a little afraid a civil war (or maybe something less dramatic) is coming. I can tell you I've never had my mind changed by somebody who treated me poorly. I still respect everybody's opinion who disagrees with me, though!

I would agree, but what if 1% of politicians are fighting for what the people want and 99% fighting against it? I think in that case the first group would get those penalties (even if they're fighting for something genuinely correct)
