  • I love this. I recently set up a “Linux flight” with various distros on a bunch of thumb drives to test drive the latest. I decided to stay Kubuntu but it made experimenting so quick and easy.

I have some friends and family that cant upgrade from Windows 10, so I’m going to keep the flight and walk them through trying out some personally selected distros.

Using Steam, Heroic, and Bottles you can even run Windows software almost perfectly, too. There’s never been a better time for regular folks to make the switch.

  • I don’t find arguing semantics to be very productive, which I think is the reason you are being downvoted. The differences between SteamOS and Windows on the Legion Go are very significant, with SteamOS gaining as much as hours of extra gameplay, in addition to modest performance gains and major improvements to usability and quality of life. And yes, the Windows tax is very much a part of the big picture even if it’s not mentioned in the article. With Windows preloaded, you are paying $100-200 more for a significantly worse product. I don’t see any reason to engage in Windows apologetics over this, especially here.

  • I’ve had this very experience with every OS I have ever touched. It’s just that Linux encourages you to experiment while the more popular OSs discourage experimentation by making it as hard as possible to get things done.

  • “AI” covers anything that so much has the superficial appearance of intelligence, which includes even videogame AI.

What you mean in this case is “AGI” which is a sub-type of AI.

  • Apple should be forced to allow the owners of Apple devices to install whatever they want. But they’ve created an illegal, monopolistic, anti-competitive trust and they are abusing it to the full extent of their power.

Forcing Apple to allow things on the app store is a remedy for Apple’s wrongdoing the same way as forcing Jason Voorhees to give his victims bandaids would be a remedy. It’s so minimal it’s performative as the wrongdoing should never have been tolerated in the first place.

  • I like Fedora simply because you don’t have to take extra steps to remove Snaps. I’ve gone from being fan of Ubuntu to avoiding it because of the way Canonical has behaved in recent years and the negative impacts that behavior has had on the distro (and community). It feels immoral preferring a Red Hat/IBM distro over Ubuntu, but unfortunately it’s the better product.

I recommend Kubuntu to new users simply because the documentation, website, and learning material is better. Bazzite is also not without it’s quirks, especially if you want to start learning more about Linux in general and branching out beyond gaming.

  • You are right. Unless the world starts to enshrine digital ownership laws very, very soon, things will get bad. They already are bad, but they could be, and will be, far worse in the not-to-distant future.

  • Bazzite is the most “SteamOS” flavor of Linux you can get right now.

If you want an OS that has a little more control, go with Kubuntu, which is very friendly. When you’re comfortable with that and familiar enough with Linux to unhappy with Snaps and Canonical, switch to Fedora or OpenSUSE.
