Kubuntu is the way to go. KDE Plasma is such a great desktop. Just be sure to do the “Minimal” install so you can avoid Snaps like the disease they are.

You still have full control. It’s just that you need to use ostree to create layers since the underlying system is immutable. It’s a different way of thinking about Linux, but means you can easily roll-back when you break something.

Fedora or Bazzite (Fedora-based) are my top recommendations for new Linux users. I’m constantly surprised at Mint’s general popularity, especially for gaming. Even openSUSE Tumbleweed is a better option when it comes to gaming.

The international rise of the Cult of Naturalism and the growing prevalence of their ur-eugenics pseudoscience is horrifying to watch. Like so many other actively harmful ideologies and policies I don’t see any non-violent solutions.

I never cease to be amazed at the “if you don’t treat bullies with respect you are the baddie” discourse in the US. It’s been the MO in schools for about 80 years and has become the standard operating procedure for many adults. Protecting yourself and others from bullies is an ethical imperative. As is supporting others who have defended themselves or others are being further victimized as a result. Bullies (and the people/systems that support them) lack empathy, compassion, reason, and accountability and are only happy when they feel powerful, which they achieve by harming anyone they think they can get away with. The only language they understand is force and any other tactic is as useful as yelling at a brick wall.

Nobody cares if you are “playing” with AI. The problem is companies like OpenAI stealing people’s work for training, and stealing their business using that stolen work for profit. Fair use stops at commercial interest and AI is nothing but commercial interest. It’s a layer cake of theft and unfair competition.

Rather than go back into that abusive relationship, people should take a look at Ghost for their next open source CMS.

If only Affinity worked on Linux I wouldn’t even need a Windows VM.

Devices of all kinds becoming more and more locked down is a thing that is already happening. Without increasingly strong consumer protections like digital ownership, right to repair, and the like, capitalism necessitates that devices and platforms continue to become more locked down, less accessible, less open, less flexible, and less private. Maybe the EU can rise to the occasion before it’s too late, but don’t expect that to happen anywhere else.

Linux is fantastic for gaming. You’ll even see performance improvements. The only games that have problems are those that intentionally block linux, like Destiny 2, but they’re not worth playing.

The places you are likely to run into problems is with certain desktop apps. For example, the Affinity suite or software designed to support specific devices or peripherals. But if gaming is your focus, Linux is genuinely a better choice than Windows all around.

If you are in the US, try Allermi. It’s essentially a very diluted form of oxymetazoline (afrin). It turns out that in small doses over longer periods, you can get consistent congestion relief without the risk rebound. It’s the only thing that has ever worked for me.

I like Debian. There are very few distros I don’t like. But it’s not the right choice for everything.

It sounds like anything with KDE Plasma will make you happy. If the underlying OS has been fine with you, then try Kubuntu. If you want a non-Ubuntu system, try openSuse or Fedora.
