  • At the very least watch Cyberpunk. It’s magnificent. But I think it helps that the setting and themes have never just been gaming-centric and the show isn’t actually based on the most recent game.

  • The Longest Journey. It’s one of the best adventure games ever made, and has one of the best stories in interactive storytelling.

Sacrifice. An old Interplay title where you are a sorcerer in service to a god. You summon armies of creatures and cast world-altering spells using the souls of creatures you’ve sacrificed to your god.

  • You know the David Frum quote?

“ If conservatives become convinced they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.”

That doesn’t just apply to democracy. It applies to religion, too. They were never believers in scripture or Jesus socialist-humanist teachings. They are blind adherents of authoritarianism, and that is ultimately all that matters. Everything else is a smoke screen.

When you corner an authoritarian with “their own” scripture (which is very easy because very few actually know any of it, besides a few choice out-of-context snippets fed to them by their leaders), they will casually dismiss the entire conversation and walk away. Maybe they will say something like “even the devil can quote scripture”, without ever bothering to engage with the topic itself.

  • The PVP implementation is a dumpster fire that undermines everything the game (and source material) is supposed to be about. If they aren’t going to do lore-appropriate faction-based PVP, then they should just remove PVP entirely. It’s amazing how wrong they got that when everything else is so right.

Otherwise, the game is incredible. It’s tense, scary, satisfying, lore accurate, and never, ever dull.

  • Windows Defender is absolutely useless and Malwarebytes is only slightly better. I’d recommend Bitdefender, and make sure it’s installed on a freshly erased computer. Digital security is an arms race and the bad guys are winning.

  • Yes, it’s practically mandatory in school and sporting events (major and minor). It’s nationalist and authoritarian on its face, both being utterly incompatible with the concept of freedom and liberty. A free people should not be “pledging allegiance” to anything or anyone, ever.

  • I have this awful feeling that Americans have been raised in such a way that they are incapable of learning lessons. They have been raised on “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” - which is literally a parable against that mindset - and are so blindly defferential to authority due to half a century of authoritarian brainwashing that no amount of abuse will ever convince them otherwise.

Look at all the “leopards eating faces” news right now. “This is terrible, why is this happening, this isn’t what I voted for… but I would vote for it again in a heartbeat.”
