  • Thanks for sharing, and for putting me right, I appreciate it! I’m very glad that they’ve backtracked on that. While it’s not a huge amount of processing in most situations, I work as a programmer and I don’t love it when I compile code and my music sounds horrible for a few seconds as the CPU gets absolutely massacred by MSBuild.

I have a DAC which is currently connected by USB - it does have SPDIF inputs as well, though. Do you happen to know if they make sound cards with USB output? Or would I need to use the SPDIF output on the card?

I might still have an old sound card kicking around (Creative X-Fi Fatality or something) but I’m not sure it’ll have Windows 8+ compatible drivers, so I might have to get a new one.

  • How dare you suggest that the NY Post would editorialise headlines? I’ll have you know that they’re a very reputable bastion of journalistic integrity, stretching all the way back to their founder (and America’s most beloved founding father), Lin Manuel Miranda. 🦅🇺🇸

  • I’m interested in learning more! What benchmarking software are you using and how are you testing that?

Edit: I looked into it and my information was outdated - support for hardware audio offloading was added back in Windows 8! I still have no idea why they removed it between XP and Windows 8, but I’m glad it’s back.

  • I’m not trying to say that ADHD isn’t a disability, I’m saying that the worst parts of it come from society being intolerant of our needs. You’re not lazy or selfish, you’re doing the best you can <3

  • I’ve also got ADHD, so I understand the struggle. But personally I think ADHD has a lot of upsides as well. People with ADHD are often really fun to be around, they have often really different perspectives on the world and see things that other people don’t, and tend to take everything in their stride. ADHD people in my experience are better at out-of-the-box thinking, handling stressful and chaotic situations, and extremely capable when they’re interested in something.

The reason that ADHD feels debilitating is because capitalist society forces us to conform with neurotypical behaviour, because conformity is more important than outcomes. If ADHD people were allowed to work their to own schedules, and allowed to focus mainly on tasks which interest them and offload things that they find boring/tedious, it would go a long way towards getting the best out of people with ADHD. If it’s handled well, they can easily outperform neurotypical coworkers, it’s just very much about harnessing the chaotic energy that we have.

  • Edit: Turns out that my information is outdated - hardware audio offloading support was added back in Windows 8, apparently!

Original comment: Sound processing hasn’t been offloaded to the sound card since Windows XP - you’ll get no performance improvement from having a sound card.

  • we can’t because they’re long dead

If someone died today who was owed £100,000 for some work they did, would the debt be written off, or would it become owed to their estate?

    most British didn’t have slaves

Did you forget what thread you were commenting on? This is about the royal family, not some random East Londoner from the 17th century.

    am I owed restitution

I would say so, yes. But it’s not “moral”, this is nothing to do with morals, it’s to do with the reality of the situation - Irish people have historically been victimised for the benefit of others, especially the British, and so I would 100% be in favour of the UK making some sort of payment to try and mitigate that problem. I do have to say that, morally speaking, (but not technically) I think it’s lower on the priority list, because white Irish people have a pretty decent quality of life now, and imo it would be better to try put money where it would be most needed before paying overdue debts to more prosperous people

  • It has nothing to do with punishing children for the sins of their fathers, it’s about paying people for the work they did. Living descendants of slave owners still benefit today from the unpaid labour, to pay reparations isn’t a punishment, it’s the smallest possible attempt to make the victims of slavery whole.

  • It’s a form of employment, but it does nothing but harm for society. Property should not be hoarded, but distributed fairly. If everyone who needed property had only what they needed, no one would need property managers. Therefore, property managers enable the hoarding of property, and that’s a bad thing.

  • To be fair, when they break, usually it’s because someone broke it… and that someone is almost always the user. Like, sure, sometimes a fan stops working or a hard drive clunks itself to the big spinning platter in the sky, but 99% of “my computer isn’t working” situations are caused by someone filling their drive with junk, accidentally unplugging something while they were tidying up, installing some software that they shouldn’t have, etc.
