  • I would take the bullets without the gun and the fuel without the motorbike. Then I would proceed to tell people about these mythical machines, forming the basis of a cult, bada-bing bada-boom, take over the world.

  • Ah yes, the classic centrist position. Why does it matter if the government performs mass surveillance if you have nothing to hide? Why does it matter if I drive a huge and inefficient car? I can make all these choices secure in the knowledge that I never do bad things so they never occur as a result of my actions.

  • Feels like a bit of a straw man argument. I don't meet people who accuse the actual AI itself of malice. That would be like getting mad with an actor who portrays a villain. I know these people exist and they are stupid but most people understand that that the A in AI stands for artificial and that means scientists and engineers make these things and capitalists provide the funding and own them.

The interesting thing about AI is that once it becomes self aware, we can legitimately insert agency into its actions in the way we do with people. We can criminalise it and punish it for decisions that it has made. We could use artificial lawyers to prosecute artificial doctors that perform botched surgeries on artificial warehouse workers.

  • The main reason I stopped using email was my former job depended on it. I quit that job and email at the same. The anxiety lifted like a weight off my shoulders. I cannot lay the blame solely on just email, that place was badly managed and I was not well suited to the role. Sometimes you just need to say, fuck it, I quit.

  • It is in the nature of people to fight and exploit others. No pacifist society would last long without weaponry. Hence, we need people to make weapons. I'm also an animal lover who eats meat and recognise the hypocrisy in my position.

The trouble with weapons is that after we've made them we are no longer in control of how they are used. I would rather use my talents to improve other people's lives but I understand why people make guns.

  • Most of my formal education occurred as an adult. I went to university when I was 35, only intending to complete an MSc but ended up working there and got a PhD after about ten years. I work as a specialist in the automotive industry now but will probably branch out of automotive. One of the appealing aspects of control systems is their ubiquity. The same skills can be applied in many different contexts.

  • Yes. I don't want my effort to be dedicated to death and destruction. Imagine you're the guy who designed the iconic Tomahawk cruise missile. You can't mistake that profile. Every time you see or hear about one of those things being launched you know there's a good chance many people are going to die. Who wants that on their conscience?

  • I retrained in control system engineering after 15 years getting nowhere and it was the best thing I ever did. My work is much more fulfilling, there's always something interesting to look in to. Finding something that you're inspired by is a huge deal.

  • Yes and no, depending on how each person views it. You cannot automatically assume it's a conversation.

I've found living in a world of text communication to be toxic for mental health. I can't keep up with all the communication channels unless I devote all my time to it. These things ought to serve us, not the other way round. I've almost completely abandoned email and was surprised to discover how much better I feel.

  • The main advantages of Apple Car® is that it runs on Apple Road® and Apple Fuel®. It was made of commonly available standardised components such as nuts and bolts but with special Apple Thread Pitch® that require Apple Spanner® to use them. There are no instruction manuals to repair Apple Car®, only Apple Dealership® is permitted. The outcome of the marketing effort causes the users to eventually become delusional about the product, believing that they own the best product and refusing to entertain any evidence to the contrary, much like religious beliefs.
