  • A new and ongoing genocide does take up a lot of the air, it doesn't stop me supporting a people who are being attacked and displaced under false pretences for the crime(?) of wanting to have self-determination as a people and attempting to align themselves with the nearest superpower that might help.

Crazy that we live in a time where that can be read as for either Ukrainians or Palestinians.

  • Not slowly per se. More like not enough to go around. Heart rates spike when blood pressure drops to try to move the lower volume around faster, but even that emergency autonomic response can lead to other problems.

Does it only happen with problems with blood (like bleeding): no. Other responses to trauma, both physical and mental, can lead to a person's body pushing blood to the surface muscles, which can deprive the vital things like organs and brains of sufficient blood. In normal cases this is just fight or flight systems kicking on. More blood to muscles is good there. But it can go too far and lead to these problems. Bodies overcorrect all the time - think dangerous fevers, or dangerous allergic reactions.

  • Listened to the segment and yeah, he's a politician: saying anything in a noncommittal way to get people in the room onto his side. He's not principled for sure, but in this case I genuinely don't think he was airing a true personal perspective either.

  • Around 100-130mg.

Both? It starts affecting you (being used up) and is starting to be broken down right away after you drink it. Not all gets used right away and not all is broken down right away, so it stays in your system for a while, circulating in your bloodstream waiting for a receptive site to bind to, or for the liver to catch it and break it down.

If you were to get this much caffeine from drip you'd have to drink 1.5-2ish cups. That takes time, which both attenuates the spike, and also extends the time the caffeine will effect you - at least by the time it takes you to down those cups.

So, the benefits of a double shot of espresso is that all that caffeine gets into your system quick, so a higher spike, but relatively shorter duration. Benefit of drip, somewhat lower spike but relatively longer duration - driven not as much by residuals in your bloodstream but by a longer titer.

Cool graph of caffeine plasma concentrations over time by various doses here.

  • Unless I read it wrong, Ohioans are planning to propose a state constitution amendment to end police qualified immunity. This rolling says, yeah you can do that. It still needs to get on the ballot and be voted on before anything changes.

Who is on the side of ending qualified immunity: pretty much anyone who isn't a cop or authoritarian. QI is basically legal armor for cops to do anything they want as long as it can be read as (waves hands) "following protocol".

  • Not a therapist, but you're also describing anhedonia, one of the more annoying and disabling parts of depression. You really should see if you can get in to see a therapist or psychiatrist, or even your GP to talk about this. Medications work. Therapy can work.
