  • I’m no dev, so I can’t speak to the codebase or mod tools, but I honestly don’t think it’s going to get much better than this right now. Lemmy has its issues for sure, but the community has been surprisingly stable, with little growth spurts here and there, and more healthy engagement than I expected. I get frustrated every so often, and there are accounts that make me want to scream, but that’s normal in any place where strangers interact.

I’m curious what other folks have to say, because if there’s a better alternative that I haven’t heard of, then I’m all in, but it’s been pretty hard to keep Lemmy as active as it is. It sounds like you might be a dev? If so, would you be willing to build the tools you want to see for the services you mentioned? It’d be awesome if folks with skills worked to improve existing open source stuff like Lemmy rather than building whole new ones that don’t have any active communities.

  • I’m about to have this issue in about 10 hours. Are you older than 30? Cuz I really started feeling the pain after 30. I recently bought an awesome inflatable pillow that keeps my head upright, so I can maybe possibly sleep instead of just fidgeting and suffering through the whole flight. I feel your pain, internet stranger.

Also, constipation. It’s so hard to shit the day after flying. Most people don’t seem to have this issue.

  • It’s also one of the most breathtakingly beautiful buildings in the world. I dare anyone with eyes to stand under the oculus when the sun shines through and not be overwhelmed by its beauty.

The fact that it’s standing intact, pretty much exactly the way it was when it was built by the Romans, is incredibly impressive. They knew how to concrete.

  • Someone sticky this shit. Can we do that here? No? Well, that was an excellent answer.

  • Yeah, I honestly don’t know how la croix does it, but that water has serious flavor, without any of that gross chemical aftertaste. I drink so much la croix…

  • That was a super interesting read, thanks for sharing!

  • Totally. He and his family have already been doxxed and threatened repeatedly.

The guy did some bad shit, but he paid the price, and has clearly been making a genuine effort to make it right. Everybody deserves a second chance and to not have their families dragged in the mud.

  • Yeah, I’m thinking about it. But despite my annoyance with the bot, I still like to see what everybody else is seeing.

  • As with many stats over the last couple decades, crime is down pretty much across the board, but minorities are still getting screwed over for not being born white. Ain’t that just the story of America: progress for some white people, and continued discrimination, hatred, mistrust, and disproportionately unfair treatment for just about everyone else.

  • Whenever I shit talk these bots I get downvoted to hell. I really don’t think we need them, they don’t provide any added value. If you want to know about the bias of a source, go find out. No need to spam every single post with a bot that can’t even analyze lesser-known sources. I’m really happy I don’t see the summary bot as much as anymore, now this one has to go.

  • That’s not what this is about.

Here’s the relevant section of the article that explains why a federal judge ruled that he was unlawfully detained:

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and while serving a sentence at Otisville Federal Correctional Institution, Michael Cohen was granted a release to home confinement. (Cohen was serving a three-year sentence after pleading guilty to crimes that included campaign finance violations on behalf of Trump.) Then Cohen announced his intention to publish a book about then-President Donald Trump. The result: Cohen was presented by prison officials with a document that conditioned his release on his agreement not to publish the book (and not to speak publicly otherwise about his experiences with and his opinions of the president). After Cohen and his attorney raised questions about this nondisclosure agreement, Cohen’s release was revoked. He was then returned to federal prison and placed in solitary confinement for more than two weeks.

  • Oy I keep forgetting about his brain mutilation company. How in the hell could anyone trust him or any of his companies to give a crap about people or safety after all the shit they’ve been exposed for? All of his companies sound like a nightmare to work at, with accusations of rampant racism, misogyny, and toxic environments at basically all of them. But sure, I’ll let someone like that cut open my head and put shitty third-rate hardware inside my body. The audacity…

  • This Jew agrees, she’s an amazing representative. She’s genuine, caring, honest, a take-no-shit badass, and an effective lawmaker. Her story is inspirational and should be a model for anyone who wonders if there are any good elected officials left.

  • Voyager has this, it’s a super useful feature.

  • Bad bot. If all you do is rate the bias of well known sources, then you’re even more useless than I thought.

  • Fuck yeah! I love it when a compelling underdog beats the top dog. Winning against the current speaker of the house is a huge deal, she should be proud!

  • Huh, so now it’s the verge, but less unique and creative. Not to disparage anyone doing redesigns, it’s a valiant effort.

  • Nope seems like you understand it perfectly. It’s completely detached from reality. It’s like saying “we know of no rigorous study showing that accurate weather forecasts produced a tangible increase in the number of people who like bagels.” Like, okay, sure, but no one thought there was.

  • That article really rubbed me the wrong way. It was a bunch of marketing people basically saying “privacy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be because it doesn’t make poor people rich” and “you’ll ruin the ability of small businesses to thrive if you don’t allow them to base their businesses on intrusive mass surveillance.”

The arrogance is astounding. If you can’t start a business without invading my privacy, you should rethink your business model. Just because surveillance marketing makes finding customers easier, doesn’t make it right. This part in particular is absurd:

Privacy can be, in some sense, a problem of the privileged. We know of no rigorous study showing that toughened digital marketing privacy policies produced tangible economic benefits for anyone, let alone lower-income consumers.

No, privacy is a problem for all of us, not just the privileged. To suggest otherwise is a deflection. It’s not always just about economics, even the working class have other things we value.
