  • The author seemed to have no trouble wearing it for so long, but I think it would be incredibly uncomfortable after a short while for the majority of users. Wearing my super-light eyeglasses all day every day is eventually uncomfortable for me. I looove taking my glasses off before bed, it’s such a relief, so I can’t imagine adding all that extra weight when I’ve got two perfectly functional monitors in front of me.

And I’m totally in favor of AR/VR/MR or whatever, it just has to be insanely light and comfortable if I’m expected to wear it for more than 30 minutes at a time.

  • After lighting the candles we used to bang on the table and chant suf-ga-niyot! suf-ga-niyot! like the little animals we were…

Needless to say, it took weeks to get the smell of oil out of our clothes with all the latkes and donuts we devoured….

  • Hah! Funny you bring up chopped liver. That was one of the only things my parents could get me to eat on matzah until I found out what it was…then I was piiiissed at them for withholding that vital information. What a dumb kid I must have been. Your veggie version sounds excellent!

  • Wait, do you actually like matzah?! I’m totally on your daughter’s side lol. It was always a groan in my household. Ugh, time for a week of cardboard sandwiches.

The only thing to look forward to was sweet matzah-brie: matzah soaked in water to soften it up, then soaked in eggs with cinnamon, sautéed, then covered with maple syrup or sugar. Basically matzah French toast.

Yeah, I wouldn’t bother making her try gefilte fish, unless you make it yourself in your bathtub!

  • I am part of the progressive base, far left of it on most days, and I vote in every single election for the candidates who reflect my values, but I also think a lot about who I think has the best chance of winning. That means more than I'd like I end up voting with the mainstream neoliberals because I'm pragmatic and understand that progress is incremental and hard. But I always vote.

I think a lot of progressives are realists, and understand that you campaign on what you want, but you govern with what you have. That means always pushing back against and criticizing actual elected democrats, even if they're my preferred candidate. That's how a healthy democracy is supposed to work. Of course we're critical of the other side, but since we actually have the slightest influence over elected officials in our party, it make sense that we'd always try to keep them honest and pull them as far to our side as we can while they're in office, wielding the power our vote gave them.

I think to some extent we're saying the same thing, I don't think people should withhold their vote. Except maybe in primaries, depending on the situation that's probably fine. But as a part of the base you're describing, I think most people are pretty smart with how they vote, and at least the progressives I know are all pretty pragmatic.

  • I’m genuinely surprised and disgusted by the bloodthirsty warmongering of the majority of elected democrats. I’m a far left Jew, not that that should matter at all, but I feel like a lot of elected officials look to people like me for permission to get all riled up and hungry for genocide. But we as Jews should be the loudest voices in the room calling for a complete and immediate ceasefire and immediate negotiations to get the Palestinians the state they obviously deserve. Because, you know, “never forget”….or some such clearly disingenuous aphorism.

It’s despicable to me that anyone, let alone Jews in Israel and beyond, thinks that what Israel is doing is remotely acceptable. We will never get back the moral high ground.

  • Yeah I have to jump servers nearly every day to get my comments to post and my feed to refresh. Kinda annoying, but whatever, a little friction is healthy imo.

  • Quantum Break was SO good. I’ll die on that hill. I want more of it.

  • I would think Trump, like any organized crime boss, understands the difference between “here’s what I owe you” and “here’s a quarter of what I owe you.”

One results in broken legs, one doesn’t.

  • I hear you, but I don't think it has much to do with religion at all. The people who voted uncommitted have families and friends who are being indiscriminately murdered day in and day out, and one of the people asking for their vote to stay in power has done just about everything he can to help the ones doing the murdering. Expecting them (as I used to) to just drop their feelings and vote for him anyway, just isn't tenable when your family is being slaughtered.

  • And they’re completely scratch-proof, right? I remember losing a CD-RW here and there (I’m old) because of scratches from everyday use. It’s fine when they only hold a few gigs, but 200 terabytes better be damn indestructible…

Put it in a minidisc-like plastic case to basically make it a cartridge and we’re in business.

Edit: oh, long term storage. My bad. Still, durability seems pretty essential.

  • The article focuses on violence after October 7th, but I have personally witnessed police and military in East Jerusalem beating people more times than I can count, way before the 7th. It was already incredibly common. I’ve said it before, but Israeli police are some of the worst people I have ever encountered.

  • Yeah I fully switched to Voyager after Memmy’s first major App Store update. Didn’t like the direction they went. I loved the first version, but Voyager has been really solid and does everything I want.

  • Ooh ooh I know! Call a joint session of Congress, brief the nation on why we need to be at war in Yemen, and then ask for a declaration from Congress. Simple!

Oh that won’t work? Then get the fuck out of Yemen.

  • Definitely. In an attempt to appear impartial, they end up going completely overboard and overcharging for things that no normal citizen would be charged for.

Also kinda strange that apparently only republicans can be appointed as a special counsel. Dems will only ever appoint republicans as special counsels because they’re too concerned about appearances, and republicans will only ever appoint republicans as special counsels because they couldn’t care less about appearances and know that there won’t be pushback, because dems are too concerned about appearances. It’s insanely frustrating.

If we’ve learned anything from the likes of Aileen Cannon, Matthew Kacsmaryk, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito, it’s that actual impartiality is and never has been the goal. It’s about exercising and expanding their own personal power over others, against the wishes of the vast majority of the electorate.

Dems need to start acting like the consequences of this shit are real, stop equivocating about appearances and start using the power the people gave them.

  • Yeah that makes more sense. Kind of ironic though, they didn’t respect their users enough to continue allowing third party apps, but now that they realize they still need new content to sign over to some unnamed AI company, they’re suddenly willing to compensate their heaviest users by reserving shares.

  • Something about this is very bizarre to me. On the one hand, offering ownership to heavy users sounds like a great idea, albeit one quite counter to Reddit’s demeanor and behavior towards users over the last couple years. On the other hand, isn’t this kind of like Netflix offering shares to the subscribers who stream the most content? Just because you use a service more than anyone else doesn’t necessarily mean you should be invested in the company. I dunno, I have mixed feelings about this, but I’m generally skeptical that Reddit ever has its users best interests in mind.

  • John Oliver will be the true test of Disney’s ability to stretch copyright law to its limits.
