  • Damn that’s a lot of cash. I like to carry some cash for emergencies, but shit, $3000??

  • Not only tiresome, which he really is, but he’s also just a stereotypical politician who talks in speeches and doublespeak, even in intimate settings, so you never actually know what he believes. Listen to him give an interview to a friendly reporter from a liberal outlet. He can barely answer the simplest questions without sounding like the most cookie-cutter mainstream Democrat. That’s not what people want anymore.

We need a down to earth candidate like AOC who communicates like a human being. Not a greasy rich white guy who talks like the most generic politician with no genuine values.

But I don’t want him to die, I just want him to go away and stop pushing himself on us.

  • Wow. That’s some seriously evil bullshit.

  • For me, if I read a post in a browser instead of the app, and then switch to the app those posts are marked as read, so greyed out a little, but aren’t hidden in the app. I’ve noticed it a lot, and it’s kind of annoying, but it may not be exactly what you’re describing. Pretty sure they persist as read but unhidden in the app even on refresh, which maybe is a bug? Hard to say.

  • Omg those pupils…better watch out, they’re definitely planning something evil…

  • I recently asked myself similar questions about two friends I knew for about 15 years. I thought I had been close with them, but I quickly answered No to all of them (plus a bunch of follow-ups I asked myself), and realized they were never real friends, or at least hadn’t been for a while, they were just people who were accustomed to seeing me and sometimes making plans together.

I always felt anxious after hanging out with them, never felt like they listened to or cared about anything I said, never remembered my preferences or things about my personal life from visit to visit, never believed me when I said I knew something, etc etc. It’s easy to get used to this kind of thing and to think it’s normal and healthy, but it was so exhausting and frustrating for me that I finally gave up and haven’t talked to them in over a year.

Sometimes these types of questions are super helpful in evaluating longstanding relationships as well as new ones.

  • The drinking water systems in the United States are so precarious and vulnerable, that I’m genuinely shocked we haven’t had more widespread issues with the water supply. The systems are made up of thousands of locally-managed interconnected intakes and outflows, and oversight is spotty and combative.

Please use a water filter. And thank your local utilities and maintenance people for their hard work keeping us alive.

  • That’s a great point. The party is only hurting itself in the short and long term by not welcoming younger candidates and trying to elect people who are actually willing to wield their power by trying shit out, rather than just further entrenching themselves by wielding their political influence. That’s the difference, the younger generations are willing to try out new policies and see if they work. That’s how this whole fucking system is supposed to function. Try something out, if it doesn’t work then too bad, you lose the next election and continue working on your ideas while the other party tries their shit out to see if their ideas work. We’ve strayed so far from that, that everyone is just accustomed to the government not trying big things, and nobody trusts that the other side would ever govern or compromise in good faith.

That’s why their anger is so frustrating to me. They’ve been there forever and done jack shit, and whine like children when someone young comes along and acts more mature by offering to fix the shit the elders have refused to.

  • I think it’s safe to say that the ancient Democrats who’ve been holding onto their seats by sheer force of incumbent political influence, contributed to turning Hogg into a school-shooting survivor. Obviously Republicans bear more responsibility thanks to their gun/violence fetish, but these Dems wouldn’t be so angry if he hadn’t touched a nerve. They’re clearly afraid of young people with new and rational ideas.

I hope these young’uns keep at it, their passion and drive is inspirational. Since the geriatrics in power clearly can’t smell their own bullshit anymore, fuck em. No one is entitled to power, you have to earn it like Hogg has through his dedicated activism. His organization has helped pass more than 250 gun safety laws, for example. He’s actually doing shit.

  • Thanks for posting this, I always appreciate primary sources. Especially when they’re short court docs like this.

  • Lol that’s a totally understandable and relatable flub. It’s one of those things that’s only relevant when you already know it’s there and what it means. Otherwise there’s no reason for your brain to think twice about it, so you subconsciously file it away with the most common meaning for NA. And every time you see it in passing you inadvertently reinforce that meaning. I find myself doing that shit all that time. The eureka moment sure is fun though! Our brains are wild.

  • I agree, but it’s all about process. The only thing that ensures our rights are respected is the process that’s used every step of the way. Issuing this order was a critical step in the process. Without the contempt order as a foundation, there could be no consequences for the administration ignoring the order. I completely share your frustration, but these things matter as they build up to what should inevitably be real consequences for the fascists. The judge knows we’re all watching, so he’s gotta be sure to get it right.

That said, I’m not confident there will actually be any meaningful consequences, but there definitely wouldn’t be any without this order.

  • Wow, that’s really impressive. I don’t really know why, but I want this.

Though I initially thought it was handheld, which would make their claim to be able to print on nearly any surface a little more believable. Still seems like incredible tech.

  • President Donald Trump's Education Department restored access to student-loan borrowers' income-driven repayment plans after the American Federation of Teachers sued the administration for taking down the online applications.

Uhhh this is news to me. Thanks for the detailed email explaining my current options… (/s obviously). I love learning about life-altering policy changes that impact me personally, from the news. Assholes.

  • One of my favorite Japanese dramas, Isekai Izakaya Nobu, based on an anime of the same name, has a plot kind of like this. Lots of fun.

  • don't think that FAANG companies realize how toxic their image is

Ain’t that the truth. Their behavior and the products they’ve been launching the last few years prove this to me. They’re completely out of touch with society and what consumers actually want. LLMs are another perfect example of that.

  • Wow, this is awesome. We have very similar tastes. I’m currently working my way through Le Guin’s bibliography, and I’m consistently impressed by her style and timelessness. She was a master of the craft.

I think I like Banks a lot more than you do. It’s been a while since I finished the Culture series though, so I might need to do a reread of some of the earlier ones. But his post-scarcity concepts, technology/ship design, and the way he tackles such massive stories, are my absolutely favorite. I loved every single book in that series. Though I do agree some of his main characters can come off as a bit dull.

There’s quite a few on there I haven’t heard of before, so I’ll definitely be saving this for my To Read list. Thank you!!

  • Parsing that title was painful.

Not sure if they changed the headline after this was posted, but it’s currently headlined “A mother who traveled to a residential treatment center to visit her child was found dead; her daughter and friend are now in custody” . . . so much easier to read.

  • As a Jew who has experienced my fair share of actual antisemitism, fuck you, DHS.

We know you’re full of shit. We know that you know that you’re full of shit. And we know that you know that we know that you’re full of shit.

Don’t use me and my people as an excuse to target immigrants. It’s transparent. We know better than most what a scapegoat looks like, you racist pieces of shit.

  • Ah, thanks for the context, I wasn’t aware of OP’s posting behavior.
