  • Boom. The Anglican Catholic Church showing the ADL how to properly denounce this crap:

"We believe that those who mimic the Nazi salute, even as a joke or an attempt to troll their opponents, trivialize the horror of the Holocaust and diminish the sacrifice of those who fought against its perpetrators," ACC said. "Such actions are harmful, divisive, and contrary to the tenets of Christian charity."

As a Jew I appreciate this immensely, though I’m very disappointed that they’ve gone silent on the genocide in Gaza.

  • Yeah, they can cite the language of the statutes all they want, but Trump is still above the law. And any of his subordinates who break the law will get a pardon, so we’re genuinely in lawless territory now. The media needs to get their fucking act together and call this out every single time, and stop pretending any of this is normal.

  • It’s a pattern of behavior. If a user spends their time nitpicking every minor detail of a comment, but seems to be incapable of understanding that other people have different ideas, or worse purposefully parses someone’s language incorrectly just to continue an argument back and forth without any progress or even a desire to see a resolution, only wanting to have the last word, I consider that to be trolling. Nobody has benefited from the interaction, and everybody leaves frustrated, annoyed, and only further entrenched in their original position.

I think people have pretty different ideas of what behavior counts as trolling, but simply disagreeing with a user or not liking their posts doesn’t make them a troll.

  • The article goes into great detail on why this matters.

  • To add to my earlier answer, the Federal Protective Service is a division of DHS that guards federal facilities. So in all likelihood it was them, but the article doesn’t specify so we don’t know with certainty.

  • Article says “security agents” which for a federal building are probably DHS agents or private contractors.

  • I definitely understand that reaction. It does give off a whiff of unprofessionalism, but their reporting is so consistently solid that I’m willing to give them the space to be a little more human than other journalists. If it ever got in the way of their actual journalism I’d say they should quit it, but that hasn’t happened so far.

  • Corporate media take note. This is how you do reality-based reporting. None of the both-sides bullshit trying to justify or make excuses, just laughing in the face of absurd hypocrisy. This is a well-respected journalist confronting a truth we can all plainly see. See? The truth doesn’t need to be boring or bland or “balanced” by disingenuous attempts to see the other side.

I will explain what this means in a moment, but first: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahhahahahahahahahahahahaha. It is, as many have already pointed out, incredibly ironic that OpenAI, a company that has been obtaining large amounts of data from all of humankind largely in an “unauthorized manner,” and, in some cases, in violation of the terms of service of those from whom they have been taking from, is now complaining about the very practices by which it has built its company.

  • I was watching the rereleased Kill Bills last week, and it was jarring when his name came up in the opening credits. I couldn’t help but wonder what awful things he might have done during production.

  • Approval ratings are meaningless. He left office after his first term with the lowest average approval rating in history, and was still reelected. The media hasn’t learned anything, they’re falling into all the same traps. We’re fucked.

  • Unfortunately I think you’re probably right. I still have some hope left in the tank for new outlets like 404 Media and Zeteo, but in general I think you’re right.

  • Of course they’re capable of error and corruption, every human being is. That’s why they ideally need institutions behind them to protect them and ensure they’re only reporting the truth. The point of a free press is to describe events as they happened and provide context, which serves as the first draft of history. They’ll certainly make errors here and there, but as long as they accurately describe reality, offer explanations based on history and uncompromising contemporary interviews, as well as promptly correct any mistakes with humility, then they’ve done their job. I don’t see how that’s the least bit dangerous.

  • Here’s a link to the actual story on Newsweek.

  • But I’m not sure why it has to stay that way. Reality doesn’t have to be less profitable than bigoted fantasies, and news was never really meant to turn a profit anyway. Regardless, Fox News and Murdoch properties are a lost cause in my opinion. I care more about the traditional press that calls themselves free and fair but hasn’t acted that way in years.

  • This is the part the American press can’t seem to learn. They’ve appeased and both-sided these dangerously bigoted fools for so long that they’re incapable of actually changing their coverage strategy.

“They don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt when it comes to this alignment. It has been a steady stream of signaling to rightwing extremists that they have an ally now in the White House.”

We all have eyes, it’s the job of the press to tell us what we’re seeing and why, not tell us we didn’t see what we all know we saw. Cover Nazis like they’re Nazis.

  • Huh, so it turns out providing effective legal counsel prevents people from being taken advantage of, how about that.

But the article points out that the program is expiring, right after they’ve figured out how beneficial it has been, because of course.

  • Ehh I’d suggest feeling it out for yourself to be honest. I’ve had some great interactions on .ml communities, as well as .world communities. But also some hair-pulling insanity. That’s where some of the most active conversations happen, but that also means you’re more likely to encounter some trolls and some awful petulant fools. When you do, just unsubscribe from the community or block the user and you’re all set.

Self-curation is one of my favorite things about Lemmy, and it’s why I like .ee as an instance, because it’s quite neutral and they let individual users choose what communities we want to see and don’t force decisions down our throats. The beauty of this place is that you can always switch instances or block communities and users you dislike, you just have to spend some time curating your experience.

  • Fourth. It puts into words things I had long accepted as normal. Knowing this kind of behavior is atypical, unhealthy, and not your fault makes a huge difference. Definitely read this book, it’s a really short and easy read, though I personally had to put it down for a few days between each chapter to process everything.

  • making exceptions to allow humanitarian food programs and military aid to Israel and Egypt to continue.

Because fuck everyone except those perpetrating a genocide, I guess. How lovely.

  • I don’t really understand the downvotes, this is a perfectly valid shower thought as far as I’m concerned.

There’s something to be said for simplifying life to reach some kind of lost happiness. But practically speaking, living as an early human, hunter gatherer, or even as an agricultural pioneer, was incredibly hard work. It’s not like there was necessarily more time to relax. You ever tried going into the forest and gathering enough food to keep yourself fed for more than a few minutes? It’s really hard. On top of that, most of humanity’s technological and medical advancements far outweigh the stresses of modern life, in my opinion.

That being said, some point to the fact that since life was hard, less comfortable, more risky, and mostly occupied by essential tasks, that it might counterintuitively lead to a more fulfilling life. I’m not sure I agree with that characterization, but sometimes hard manual labor that yields results feels good, so I get it.

Regardless, solid shower thought, I often think about similar things.
