  • I looked back at all the new songs I added to my favourites in Spotify during 2024, and found surprisingly few songs by Canadian artists. Only one, in fact. I don't think this one song is particularly great material for a popularity contest, but I'll throw it in anyhow:

Low Tide by Deer Fang (St. Catherines, ON), released in 11 October 2024 in English.

The first few months of 2025 have been way more fertile, so I have three more nominations in the posts to follow (would be four, but I'm assuming that something from Our Lady Peace's newest album wouldn't count).

  • The federal Conservatives are very explicitly a coalition, being formed when the Progressive Conservative Party and the Canadian Alliance merged in 2003.

One of the questions asked elsewhere in this topic is whether a failure in the next election will cause that to splinter again. I can't even begin to speculate if that's possible, but I can imagine at least some people are thinking about it.

  • I know it's easier said than done. I also believe in not making perfect the enemy of good. I'd rather have the whole population of Canada doing as much as they can, even if it means still buying certain American products on occasion, than only a few people making a 100% break.

  • That's how Trump thinks, though. Every transaction is zero sum to him.

I'm also convinced saw the "deficit" part of "trade deficit" and either automatically assumed it was bad thing or knew he could convince low-information voters that it was.

Or maybe he is a dumbass and someone on his campaign staff was the crafty one.

  • Copilot is one of two LLMs I've briefly tried. It was noticeably better than Gemini was at the time, but still seemed entirely pointless. Nothing it (or Gemini) offered to do were things I wanted help with. I enjoy research and writing, so why would I outsource those things and burn down an acre of rainforest in the process?

  • "Swearing"

5th grade, first day at a new school. I'm trying to meet new kids, but I'm terribly awkward. I try to lead one conversation with some humour "Did you know the Bible says you shouldn't covet your neighbour's ass?"

Cue some other kid running off to find a teacher, which resulted in me having to skip recess and write an essay about how I shouldn't swear because it is a bad influence on younger kids.

Over the following four years I was on the receiving end of invective many times more aggressive and offensive, sometimes right in front of teachers, but I never saw another kid punished for foul language.

  • I'm not a Tolkien superfan, and for me it was mostly just kind of boring.

Also, this portrayal of Middle Earth seems to have very limited ontological inertia. Everything not on screen might as well not exist. Even the things that are shown feel static and shallow, like there isn't enough "stuff" to actually fill out the world and support the complex societies within.

  • I seem to remember visiting their homepage last year sometime, and every headline was some variation on [Name of politician][aggressive verb][target of ire][reason for the spat], e.g.:

    • "John Bloggins slams Joe Blow for wearing a plaid tie"
    • "Mary Sue rips Judicial Committee for goat scandal"
    • "Peter Flarking haymakers Geraldo over unreturned library books"
  • It doesn't matter if you guys somehow manage to get adults back in charge in the next 2-4 years. There is nothing stopping another Trump-esque person from being elected again soon after and tearing everything down again. Until you guys purge MAGA and can prove you are in no danger of a relapse, we simply can't trust you.

  • It's generally going well. I already did this boycott once before during Trump 1.0, so I know what do look for.

It's a bit harder this time around because there are things we need where a Canadian (or at least non-American) alternative doesn't exist. The big one is diapers, as we haven't been able to find anything non-American that also works within our budget and time constraints.

It's unfortunate, but also only temporary. My kids should be out of diapers in a few years, provided the world doesn't end before then.

  • I avoided American products during the first Trump term, and started buying them again after Biden was elected.

This time, though, I am not going back, even if American voters somehow manage to put adults back in charge in the next 2-4 years. Trump has destroyed the USA's relationship with Canada, and that can't be repaired if there's even a shred of a chance this could happen again.

  • I don't want to get hopeful yet. I still think it'll be an uphill battle to keep Poilievre out of the PM's office. I'd want to see some consistent polling shifts across multiple sources before having any real hope.

That said, even if this as a vast overestimation of the Liberals' reversing fortunes, it could still be enough to eke out a small victory. Given how dire the polling was before Christmas, just holding the Conservatives to the slimmest of majorities could be considered a win of sorts
