  • LOL the article says Russia lost 1 submarine but are you kidding? They've been promoting their surface vessels to submarine status

  • This is awful. Also, going under the ice is a one-way ticket

  • I don't want to see news about the FBI saying it's looking into this, I want to hear about indictments

  • It's so frustrating that this sort of drivel ends up being elevated as serious politics.

I mean really, all they've got at this point is fear and anger and reactivity to anything that might be a change, and he's just charismatic enough to play them into wanting him to be their King.

  • I was pretty happy with EverNote until it started to feel like they were ransoming my content against sudden price hikes and enshittifying reductions in basic function Fk those guys

  • Yeah it's always fun how when these folks disagree with someone else, the pope even, it's the other guy's fault for the disagreement happening. As if the moral universe revolved around them and it really was as simple as if everyone agreed with me there'd be "no division".

    Also, there's this

  • Removal of black history classes completes the erasure of generations of racial terrorism against black people, of course they want that.

A policy of denying racial inequity and preventing the truth from being told about it is the very definition of structural racism.

  • The opportunity, of course, is that it might become feasible to mine the air for carbon (and fold it with added electricity from transient sources like wind/wave/tide/solar) and compete with the folks pumping sequestered carbon fuels from the ground.

Of course, this wouldn't compete with the use cases for petroleum that arise in refining the polymers in oil (think of all the plastics and other compounds that come out of the oil industry that aren't refined fuels). Selling those products is so profitable that for years oil companies have been flaring off excess natural gas at the wellhead to be rid of it instead of spending the money to capture, contain, and ship it to market. On the one hand, if this tech to mine CO2 from the air becomes a competitor, 1 of 2 things happens:

      1. Refined fuels become cheap, so cheap that they'll be flared off as waste instead of captured
      1. Petro-based polymers will become more expensive as their subsidy by the sale of refined fuels is undercut by competition

It's probably #2, really refined fuels can be considered a waste product of extracting the petrochemicals

  • On a recent vacation my family rented a Tesla, and the place we were had limited infrastructure to support it.

    I had several takeaways:

    • The drivetrain of an electric vehicle is fantastic, eventually it's the future all cars will have
    • The charging infra and paradigm we have right now would be limiting in some use cases
    • A plug-in hybrid gets you most of the upsides of an electric drivetrain and the ability to run all-electric for in-town errand running, but also has the ability to refuel at the rate of chugging gasoline into a tank
    • We don't want a Tesla, their QC is sub-par and it's only a matter of time before real car companies ramp up on the EV and bring their QC chops to the game

One day, when batteries are a common standard and can be swapped like you swap a propane cylinder for your grill, I will have no reason to want a PHEV, we'll be able to ditch the dead-weight gas engine foreverrr

  • scientists raise fears it may jump to humans

Who says it hasn't? I mean, have you looked at our politics lately?

  • It’s the same for police. The exception are when there is a fiduciary relationship, if you created the peril, or if you start rescuing someone you can’t leave them worse off. Usually these exceptions don’t apply to police, even if you call and ask for help, they have no duty to act.

Clear takeaway: when they said “Because this complaint was made directly to the police department, we are obligated and have a duty to examine the complaint further" it really means they wanted to do it but didn't want to be held responsible for wanting that. (after all, if they had no choice in the matter it's not their fault they're doing ghoulish police-state things most people don't want done)

  • Just in time for alt-meats to become cost-comparable and palatable enough to compete I'm genX, voting with my dollars for that, despite beef being so delicious

  • we will not discuss individual specifics of care.

CALLING THE COPS IS NOT CARE

  • This was always part of the design of overturning Roe. It has never been about the sanctity of life, in exactly the same way that the War on Drugs was never about health or preventing addiction or drug abuse.

The War on Drugs was a pretext for massively expanding the police state in order to disrupt the antiwar left and the black community. It was enacted under Nixon (who needed to shut down the antiwar left) shortly after desegregation (thus giving police forces broad latitude to profile and harass 'suspicious' people like black people). As a consequence, the antiwar left basically folded and today there are more black and brown people in prisons on drug charges than there ever were enslaved in America- and 20% of black people in Tennessee can't vote because of a drug conviction.

The War on Abortion is the War on Drugs 2.0, only this time it targets a bigger slice of the population. Women charged with contrived felonies like this not only have to endure the hell of it, but also the insult of criminal charges- and like the War on Drugs, enforcement discretion will fall most-heavily upon black and brown people and anyone else that doesn't 'know their place' to the satisfaction of anyone in a position to narc.

  • Ah yes, the party of law and order shows itself yet again to actually be the party of organized crime

  • Only for so long as the venn diagram of FBI/CIA:MAGATs continues to have enough overlap that they're in a position to investigate themselves and their buddies and find they did nothing wrong
