  • Well said. I'd managed to quit from cigarettes using a salt nic vape. It was a bit involved though. I learned how to make my own e-juice and properly dose nicotine (very important!). I titrated my dose down gradually over about 6 months until I was off nicotine. And then kicked the oral fixation by making a conscious effort to vape less. It worked alright for me. I wound up picking up the habit again a couple of years later after going through an extended period of shit just going wrong. Trouble is, I can't do what I did last time because you can no longer order concentrated nicotine through the mail anymore. At least in the US

  • Aren't these the types that ramble on about "parental rights" too? If the child, parent/s, and doctor all agree then what's the fuss? I know they don't actually give a shit but their hypocrisy is exhausting. Not to mention we're talking about a very, very small minority of children getting gender affirming surgery. If it were a genuine problem (it isn't) I'd say we have much more important matters to address than a few teenagers getting implants

  • Audio/video technology came to mind for me too. There's so many layers of technological development to get to even the most basic A/V displays. And even more to have something to play on it. It's sure to amaze or terrify some people from ages past. Similarly, navigation. Through something like a smart phone, it would probably be baffling to the brightest minds of the early 20th century, let alone centuries ago

  • Speakers still blow my mind. The concept of sound and hearing in general, really. It's incredible how much information, and the variety of information, you can cram into pressure waves. The fact that we have organs and neural pathways that are not only able to, but are solely devoted to the interpretation and transmission of pressure waves built into us is mind boggling. These weird wobbly bones in our head allow us to experience the world and each other. Mind boggling.

  • Agreed, we're still intuitive creatures. An elevator may seem otherworldly for a moment but that feeling would quickly fade once you saw the cables and pulleys causing the cab to ascend/descend. It may be one of those "I've never thought of that but it makes sense" sort of revelations over "this is impossible"

  • Go into your watch history and remove them after disliking it. I find removing stuff from my watch history to have a bigger impact over disliking stuff. You can also have YouTube stop recommending specific channels to you. Odds are if they're posting Jordan Peterson content, you're not missing anything of value by blocking them

  • I've found my people lol. Work is the only thing that motivated me to brush my teeth. On my off days, my mouth will sometimes feel gross and I'll brush it to get rid of that feeling. When it's not bothersome, I forget to do it

  • For hobbies/projects or just general upkeep, I find it helps to have dedicated, visible places for things. Myself and my wife both have ADHD, so we're a bit of a mess lol. My wife likes to paint and she has a dedicated table and cart that contains all of her art stuff. In theory, it stays there and never leaves. She'll occasionally take things out of their space and they will be forgotten/abandoned for weeks. When it stays in its place shes more active and doesn't quit on pieces due to not having easy access.

    I like to cook and find the same to be true in the kitchen. Certain things go in certain drawers, cabinets, etc. Obsessively. They have to be exactly where they're supposed to be or I'll either forget about them or try to improvise, often with not great results. So I guess my advice is to keep things where you're most likely to use/need them and do your best to stick to it. Having multiples of whatever your "thing" is also helps. Within reason of course. There's no need to have multiple drills, stud finders, blenders, etc.

  • Nail on the head. Aspartame is still better for you than super processed foods loaded with sugar. This reminds me of the big smear campaign against fat that the sugar industry engineered to take the heat off of themselves way back when

  • It's a staple southern American Southern US breakfast dish. Drop biscuits (similar to buttermilk biscuits, but it'd denser and fluffier. No layers either), covered with sausage gravy. If you're not from the US/North America I'm not sure if there's an equivalent to breakfast sausage. I hope so! Because if you have the time to make some I would really recommend it!

    Couple of tips for anyone looking to make some biscuits and gravy:

    • Use shortening in your biscuits, idk what it does different but it works best imo.
    • If you're going to use biscuit mix, use Formula L if you can find it. It's the best. Good for pancakes too!
    • Let your roux get a some color before adding the milk. Pale sausage gravy doesn't taste nearly as good. Just use low heat and keep the sausage and flour mixture moving to ensure you don't burn it.
    • Use full fat milk for better flavor.
    • After you add the milk and it warms back up, throw 4 or 5 chopped up fresh sage leaves into your gravy. Sage, fennel, and pepper are a big part of the flavor profile of American breakfast sausage, adding a little extra really helps the flavor pop!
    • And finally, let the gravy get thick! Watery gravy should be illegal
    • For vegetarians: beyond sausage works great if you want to try it! It browns quicker than regular sausage though, so keep an eye on it. And you might need to add a little extra fat, butter or margarine works well.
  • I'm mid 20s, not really into tech, and in the medical field. I'm sure the demographic skews towards the "older" tech-focused group but there's others on Lemmy too. It's a pretty small learning curve to get signed up and active imo. Especially with the recent explosion of apps that offer a familiar mobile browsing experience
