  • I wonder how this is handled in emergency situations. Im in EMS and we practice under implied consent if the patient is unresponsive. Can't say I've ever been on a call where I've needed to inspect someone's genitals outside of a quick look for priapism/injury but it might be a thing in the ER

  • The amendment for recreational pot is going on the ballot this November. The petition was shot down twice, once for the wording on the ballot and the second time for not "securing enough signatures". This time it passed. The first vote for medical failed to get a super majority but the second round passed. No one in Florida has had a chance to vote on recreational pot in the past as far as I can find/remember.

Don't get me wrong, it's frustrating bullshit that we've had to fight it twice to get it on the ballot. But to say we've already voted for (and passed) it twice is verifiably false

  • Sure, for corporations and the wealthy. But it straight up yanks information from small authors, artists, etc. I couldn't give less of a shit if Disney is impacted from AI, but there is real potential for harm to average people. Submitting your shit to AI should be opt-in, scraping the web for content that company didn't create with no consent from the content creators for the means of profiting off their labor is wrong. Copyright is fucked, yes. It protects the wealthy more than it protects the non-wealthy, yes. These companies practices are still fucked too. Two things can be bad and there is plenty of room for nuance in this area

  • One is theft and an infringement of privacy for nefarious ends and the other is a painting. There's a world of difference between agreeing to let someone paint you and a corporation using your data to train AI. Spinning this basic reality into sinophobia is mind boggling. There are people in this thread shitting on Google for the same thing. Would you call it amerophobic to criticize Google for the same shit? Of course you wouldn't

  • There's a whole world of new music out there that is sure to be appealing to you. Don't be so quick to judge, especially about musical tastes. It's not all simple, repetitive pap. The modern landscape of music publishing and distribution has lead to immense gains in independent artists ability to reach a large audience. Go digging. I'm sure you'll find something incredible

You mentioned metal and hard rock so I thought I'd leave some recommendations

Electric Wizard - dopethrone (2006) a truly innovative metal group. Blending elements of sludge, noise, doom, stoner, and space metal

Chat Pile - God's Country (2022) a relatively new band. Their music is largely post hardcore and noise, with elements of sludge. Perhaps they aren't to everyone's taste. But if you enjoy visceral music, this will be right up your alley.

Liturgy - 93696 (2023) Self described as "transcendental black metal", you can accuse them of plenty of things but they certainly aren't repetitive or simple.

Show Me the Body - Dog Whistle (2019) Post-hardcore and post-industrial outfit from New York, good shit.

And to mix it up a bit Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There (2022) An eclectic post-rock and art-rock group that has easily become one of my favorite bands. Their music is beautifully composed and the lyrics are incredible. It may be in your comfort zone, it may not be. But its certainly worth a listen if you're even slightly interested in rock that isn't hard rock or metal

  • I'm not a farmer but I've been reading about the history of industrial farming lately and I've become convinced that we're approaching agriculture completely wrong. We're planting massive monocultures in soil that's been wrecked for decades (via the things you've mentioned), surely that would have something to do with it?

If we completely flipped everything we've been doing for agriculture we'd be better off in the long run. Small farms have better yeilds, polycropping is better for the environment and modern pesticides create an evolutionary arms race that we will never win. We've got it all wrong and we've known it since (at least) the 70s. These outdated, expensive, impractical agricultural practices are only making things worse

  • You need a better friend! I'm 28 and still go mini golfing on every now and then. Let your inner child free, life's too short to worry about the acceptable age range of mini golf
