  • The first year was the roughest as I adapted to the new normal. The second year was all about rediscovering myself as an individual. It was somewhere during that second year that I began feeling happier, and in the years since then that happiness has multiplied.

If I can offer some advice, don't go out and make any major life decisions for the next year or so. You probably won't be thinking soundly for awhile and don't want to do anything major you'll regret once you are. Secondly don't go running off looking for another long-term serious relationship, you will need some time to rediscover who you are as an individual as people have a tendency to lose that sense of self during long relationships. I made both these common mistakes, and they're among the few things I've done that I regret in my life.

Lastly remember what you're doing is probably the best thing for your son as every study I've ever read says children are better off with two happy parents who are divorced over those who have unhappy parents who stayed together for the child's sake.

Stay strong. Your world is being shaken up right now, but things will settle down and once you're on the otherside you will likely realize, like me, that you're happier. Best of luck.

  • The problem with this line of thinking is who would set the standard for the test? The current controlling power would skew things so only their supporters are now qualified to vote. In order to have a free and fair election every citizen needs the right to vote, otherwise we might as well just go back to the days that only white male landowners get to vote.

  • We spent twenty years fighting their battles for them, $2.3 trillion spent helping build up their infrastructure, supplying them with weapons and training, and trying to help them build a legitimate democratic government. After all our efforts, expenses, and American lives lost, it took the Taliban just ten days to retake the entire country. Freedom can't be given it has to be won, and frankly they weren't willing to fight for theirs... and I say this as a disabled combat veteran who lost dozens of friends to this conflict either in combat or to their own hands once they returned home. What a waste.

  • I grew up outside Chicago and hate big cities and the endless urban sprawl, moved to a tiny town in Wisconsin with less than 7k people and had similar experiences as you described. Currently living in a nice big/small town of about 50k and loving it. It's big enough that most people don't know me or my business, but small enough it still has that small town vibe to it. As an added bonus I'm only an hour or two away from large cities, so not an unreasonable drive if there's something fun happening that I want to attend... I'll probably live here for the rest of my life.

  • Which religion do you follow that wasn't conceived of, had a holy text written by, and teachings propagated by humans?

Over the known course of human history there have been at least 18,000 different gods, goddesses, various animals, or objects that have been worshipped by mankind. What they all share in common is they're all fictious constructs created by ignorant humans in an attempt to explain natural phenomenon that were beyond their ability to make sense of through logical scientific means.

That being said I will concede that I still believe in the possibility of a higher power as I think it is just as ignorant to claim nothing exists as it is to claim something does without any verifiable evidence. However if such an entity does exist it is so far beyond our ability of comprehension that any claims to know its motivations or what it expects of us are ludicrous fiction at best, or intended as tools of manipulation at worst.

The truth of the matter is we will never know one way or another for certain. So why live life based on outdated beliefs/morals from ages past?

I operate on the principle that if a God exists, and they are a just God, then I'll be judged by my actions, how I lived my life, and whether I was a good person who has done right by others, and not based on whether or not I professed my faith in and worshipped their existence. If a God exists that would punish me for all eternity for not believing in, or worshipping them, then they're not a just god and would be unworthy of said worship.

  • You said you'd consider dumping fox news when I stopped watching the programs you mentioned. That sounded like a pact to me.

The problem with all news media these days is it no longer gives you the facts without it also telling you how you should feel about the facts based on their particular biases. If you only look to the sources that confirm your bias you're not getting properly informed on the issues, you're simply existing in an echo chamber having your views reaffirmed by the others that share them without ever hearing or considering there might be more to the story.

I never claimed to be above being affected by this myself, but I am consciously aware of how serious a problem it is. I do the best I'm able to see all sides of an issue, from multiple sources, the more non-biased the better (though this is getting increasingly more difficult), and then I make up my own mind as to what I think without allowing the media to tell me how I should feel.

Fox news is one of the worst sources for biased news as it is the only news network that was started with the agenda of specifically appealing towards a conservative audience. They have even won defamation lawsuits by arguing their shows are performances and shouldn't be taken as fact. They've always cared more about ratings than the truth... MSNBC is a close second on spewing drivel catering to liberals. I wouldn't trust anything either of them say without first doing some independent research on my own.

  • I've looked into many other religions since then, but I was able to satiate my curiosities through purely academic means. In other words I didn't find it necessary to drink the flavor aid in order to scratch an itch.

  • I wasn't raised with a religion (parents were both atheists), but when i was around 15-16 I got curious. I started attending the youth group at the local feel good church up the street and literally every single sermon was about how teenagers have urges, but we must resist them as sex before marriage was a terrible sin.

Well after a couple months of weekly don't have sex meetings the cops showed up to arrest the youth pastor for something like 27 counts of statutory rape. He had been sleeping with all the girls in the youth group ranging from 18 all the way down to the 13 year-olds.

The only reason he got caught was because two of the girls got into an argument about how they were his one true love, and one of them called the cops on the other one because she got called a bad name. That ended my very short experiment with religion, bunch of fucking hypocrites pretending they're better than other people while doing exactly what they tell others not to... at least the sex I was having was legal.

  • I've started playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 at least a dozen times and just couldn't get into it enough to keep going. To me it feels like it would be best played as multi-player experience, and frankly I just don't have any gamer friends willing to play it with me. I just bought BG3 because of this post, so really hoping I don't run into this same dilemma.

  • Does she think that g-string and oversized t-shirt she probably wears to bed would provide a suitable barrier preventing the demon from cramming a lasagna up her ass? Must be one weak ass demon if it's so easily deterred from its objective.

  • I'm in my early 40's. I'm still hanging in there, and I do still enjoy gaming, just not with the same passion or levels of enjoyment I once had. Every once in a while a new game drops that will bring it back but only for a little while though.

  • You're getting older unfortunately. I've been watching this happen among my friends for a long while now. They all slowly grow up and leave gaming behind replacing it with other hobbies or interests. Your free time becomes more limited the older you get and the more responsibilities you aquire in life (career, spouse, children, etc.). I'm one of the last hold outs from my childhood friend group, and even I'm slowly starting to lose interest in gaming. I don't think I'll ever give it up entirely, but it definitely doesn't hold the same appeal for me that it once had.
