Reddit enrages users again by ditching thank-you coins and awards

Glad to see my fellow boost people around. Also haven't visited reddit since boost stopped working. The boost app can be patched to work but.. I'm just sick of Reddit and don't want to support it. Can't wait for Boost for Lemmy! Jerboa is great but miss my boost
Iirc that requires Android 10 correct? When I initially read of the patch I had an old phone that wasn't capable of android 10 but have recently upgraded. Do you happen to have the link with patch instructions?
I see exactly where you're coming from but personally when making usernames I can never re-use one because I always feel like the next one I make is going to be "the one" and trump all of my pathetic previous attempts lol.
That urge to be better, to continue growing has entire life. Never satisfied. New vehicle? First thought is "how can I tweak it to make it better?" Then I begin tweaking with things and am happy. The second that I can't find more things to tweak and feel that it's as close to perfect as can be within my capabilities it becomes stale and I lose interest.
This is a cancer for my passion in writing lyrics as in my opinion art can NEVER be good enough. The more time you put into it, the better it gets and if a change I've made makes something worse I start from square one and begin again. I've been writing music for nearly my entire life but only ever actually recorded music in the beginning when it was just a hobby. Then I realized that it was something I could actually be good at and became serious. Haven't recorded a single track since. I just write and write and write. Even when I make something beautiful, to me, that I made that? Just means I'm capable of making something better on the next page so the beauty is forgotten as soon as it was realized.
Sorry for the rant and personal details! Sometimes I use my comments as a means of introspection. Would just paste them into my notes app but I don't. I leave them in the hopes that maybe someday someone can maybe help me figure myself out or at the very least not feel so alone if they are similar.
Have a nice day/night.
I loved Academic biblical too! Also I can't remember the sub name but religious/atheism debates I find intriguing. Oh ofc debate an atheist was one, debate a Christian iirc was another. Would love to see a giant instance that covers debates between all religions and atheism, the noachides, Jewish, Christian's, Muslims, Buddhists even Hinduism I love all religious debate!
I don't support Republicans going against trans people or messing with abortion, to be honest I think they should keep their nose out of our personal choices and leave us be.
But I don't like the left either.
It's not "left vs. right" - that's just how it's framed to us. The U.S government is fucked up on all levels and both sides have done heinous things and kept us divided throughout history.
I truly believe that's all the two party system is, division. Ever listened to "Binaural beats"? Where they play for example a lower frequency in one ear, but a higher frequency in the other. I don't remember the exact method so pardon if I'm Rusty but basically the end result is we hear and are tuned to the frequency in between the two, low and high, sounds.
To me that's what the two party system reminds me of. One party outrages and destroys certain liberties or whatever. The other party fights back and the result is whatever they want it to be.
I just want to do away with all of it. Remove every part of the government that isn't directly benefitting our quality of life and start over.
You're right. I see ALL data collection like this as a threat. Fb, IG, TT, Twitter, Google, Apple the works.
Threat to national security? Who could know besides the higher ups.
Threat to society? Again I don't know but god, most of TikTok is extremely cringe and has people wasting so, so much of their time either viewing stupid videos or filming them.
Idk, I just think turning society into a popularity contest/mediocre talent show is.. weird. Collectively, how many billions of hours have been wasted by people staging, viewing and filming simplistic dances due to apps like this?
When we could be doing.. anything of significance.
Sure, there's some informational stuff on there no need to remind me but let's be honest how much of it is basically "Look what I can do!"
I've got a video of a turtle fucking another turtle..
Jk they aren't actually fucking but think they were just before I found them. The turtle was my old friend and I'd been looking for him for years so when I saw him I immediately hit record and realized what he was doing later..
Summed up my opinion of Google perfectly. It's getting more and more difficult to find actual results for my searches, just all crowded with suggestions I'm not interested in. I wouldn't even realize how bad it was if I didn't use DDG to compare it to
Yep I second this! Switched to duckduckgo a few years ago and never looked back. Didn't even miss Google! Google is too intent on selling me stuff while monitoring damn near everything I do on my device. No need for them. Did love Google photos and how I could easily sync it to my PC but they've done away with that as well which is amazing to me because people loved it and there's really no alternative that works as well as it used to.
Exactly! Last I checked, sure there was a lot of activity BUT as you said, many subs are still dark. The major subs that reopened with new moderation have definitely had a major dip (imo) in quality. I was still seeing John Oliver everywhere. They did use quite a few users, maybe not enough for them to flinch too hard but, how active were those users? I consider my old account there a "power comment account" I rarely posted but was extremely active in the threads, spending hours each day replying to comments of my inbox, so much so that I rarely even viewed actual content. Makes me wonder, how many accounts like mine did they lose? Many just lurked. The comment sections were fueled by active commenters and imo it wouldn't take losing too many like me for the threads to take a noticeable hit.
Anyway I don't care much about how it is over there rn, just glad I have this place so I don't have to support that platform in any way. Plus now that I've found a cool app, jerboa or whatever it's quite enjoyable! Connect and liftoff are also great but my phone doesn't play well with many apps.
Also work with cars and absolutely agree. Tesla may have kick-started the market but as a rule in general you're usually better off going with the engineers that have more experience under their belt. The exceptions being if the company is cutting corners to save money which Tesla is supposedly doing anyway so yeah, I'd go with the other guys.
Used to work for a company you names and even as a low level guy it was so obvious how immoral they were. Oh, your device is shocking your ears?
Checks "phrasing instructions"
"Oh, it's not your device that's doing that, you must have a health issues and should see a doctor now, that's crazy! No I don't know why it only happens when you have the device held to your ear and the shock us going through your ear!"
"No I don't know why your house burned down, it couldn't possibly be because the latest software update was to make your device obsolete by ruining the battery life which caused instability and made it explode hence burning down your home in an attempt to force you to upgrade to our latest piece of shit product because we made the first one so well that it never would've broken meaning no one will buy our new ones that IF you're lucky will last a year conveniently just in time for our newer even less stable piece of SHIT brick to drop!"
I feel like providing an email is a much better alternative to having your account blanket banned due to creating it at a certain time.
If not emails maybe just being stricter when checking to see if the one creating an account is human?
Yeah that worries me. Was definitely just a lurker at first while I got used to the place. They didn't ban me so I'm still here. Never had issues making or keeping accounts before but here lately it's been such a hassle. Instagram has taken to banning me immediately, I had to make 10 accounts in a row before they didn't immediately ban one.
Worst part is they don't tell you why and you can't fight it. I feel like it's bc I use a VPN then lurk but idk. never another account there, not worth it. Facebook did the same thing a few times until something finally clicked in their system and they quit deleting them.
Tiktok has apparently done the same damn thing as I went to use my account the other day just to be informed it was deleted or banned I don't remember.
Think it said to check my email, which I frequently do and there was no mail saying my account was going to be deleted much less why.
It's ridiculous and rather than making a new account I just exit the site now.
So deleting them all? I don't really agree (though I hope they were indeed bots!)
I think what would make more sense is to be more strict when users actually create the accounts in the first place. I feel like those "select all the images with bikes" are ridiculous, I'm human and half the time Google or wherever says I didn't get it right but there HAS to be a simpler, better way.
I get hit with those all of the time, I think everyone with a VPN does so a few additional steps wouldn't be such a big deal and imo would be far less annoying than logging in and realizing your account was blanket banned without explanation just bc you happened to create it while bot accounts were being made.
Would help even more if users had a string bot report feature where it was taken seriously. It could be pretty simple. See a bot? Report it.
The reviewer of the report, instead of just blanket banning should maybe contact the user first to check and see if they're human. As far as user retention it's better than just banning every bot we think we have.
I'm using liftoff ATM and haven't had the confusion you're mentioning (I don't think) but haven't browsed much. Maybe worth a try.
Waiting on Boost for Lemmy myself
Waiting on boost here too, Ruben or whoever needs to hurry up!
Same here! Was a reddit addict for years. Have been dropping my usage down for a while, to the point that I barely used it before the api changes. After the API changes I quit altogether bc I feel greasy every time I support them in any way. Then Boost my 3pa finally died and I haven't logged in since bc the official app is absolute trash. Liftoff has been a decent replacement so far but I really wish the boost Dev would hurry up with releasing their Lemmy app!
Other than that yeah, I've spent much more time outdoors. Even before the API announcement I'd replaced reddit with writing bc I mostly made lengthy comments anyway. Writing skills are pretty solid now& I think I've put in at least, oh shit I write about 3 hours most days and it's been a few years of writing, I've written around a thousand+ hours just in the past year or so! Very happy about that bc I enjoy it. Tbh if I'd scrolled Reddit mindlessly all that time well damn, I wouldn't have learned anything but a few random facts. Wouldn't have gotten better at anything except commenting.. sheesh. I like Lemmy and support it but think we should all probably reduce our online time a bit, bc as much as I love it, we really could be doing more with our lives and mindlessly scrolling the web is almost always just wasted time. Can't think of anything I've ever done online that's actually bettered my life in anyway, much less bettered myself. Enrolling in classes and learning? Sure. Scrolling mindlessly? No.. it's not good for us.
Yep, they killed boost, I quit.
On the bright side I like it here and don't feel ashamed of myself for supporting assholes every time I log in
You stayed on Reddit after boost stopped? I just couldn't force myself to use that shitty app. Not judging there are things I would definitely like to use it for but can't stand that app.
You can patch boost to work again with Android 10+ though there's a tutorial somewhere thinking of using that for things I can't yet find here
