  • And how is that relevant to this conversation at all?

There’s no relevance whatsoever about car maintenance to knowing how your software works. There’s not a single bit of parallel that can be drawn without massive stretches like you’ve been trying to make

  • Please show me where OP says that, as their comment history doesn’t indicate anything of the kind being said. This sounds like a fabrication you’re making up

  • Cool. But that really doesn’t make any sense and has next to no relevance.

The majority of people with cars don’t know how they work beyond the barest basic understanding. I’d wager 90% at least of car owners couldn’t change their own oil if they tried, and that’s completely ok.

You don’t need to know anything about how your tech works for it to work. They are absolutely wants. There’s no need to know at all.

The average user doesn’t need to know Linux. They don’t need to know how things work under the hood. It makes absolutely no sense to invest time into something you’re not interested in for absolutely no benefit

  • These comments are really proving your point

I’m also in the same boat. I’m simply not interested in running Linux as a daily OS, and pretty much any gaming or tech content here is exclusively that. And then when you express any sort of counter opinion you get attacked.

I’m honestly finding myself scrolling Reddit without participating a lot more than I’m on here.

  • You’re welcome to volunteer to be the first patient, I mean experiment

And those practices of testing on animals are inhumane and are being phased out.

Edit: Oh, and we all hate it not (just) because it’s musk, but also because it’s had next to no success in animal trials and offers no benefits other than data tracking inside our heads

  • Exactly. There is an actual, tangible benefit of doing it that way. I don’t like it, as it creates situations where you’re unable to upgrade your own hardware, but it does make sense for the 95% of the population who has never opened a laptop, let alone tried to replace ram

  • I simply do not give a shit. Your right to a gun is infinitely less important than the right to life. You’ll live without your guns. You don’t need them for your day to day life. You carry them because you’re scared of the world.

I support the removal of every gun in civilian hands and bans on manufacturing of new ones. There should not be any way for guns to be widely available to a populace that has consistently proved over the last 20 years that they are incapable of using and maintaining them safely.

  • Tiling can be replaced by 3rd party apps pretty easily.

I’m more interested in what keybinds you’re needing to use constantly. I can’t think of more than 3 or 4 that get used, all the others are extreme niche cases

  • To be fair, the Mac mini is the worst way to experience macOS. macOS works much better with a trackpad and Apple keyboard, which eliminates a lot of your problems I think.

I also have a Mac mini and it barely gets used because it’s a shitty experience to use with a typical windows based mouse and keyboard.

  • Of all the points in their blatantly wrong comment, this probably wasn’t the one to single out. The reason for the soldered RAM is due to speed and length of traces. The longer the trace, the more chance there is for signal loss. By soldering the Ram close to the cpu the traces are shorter, allowing for a minuscule improvement in latency.

To be clear, I don’t like it either. It’s one of the major things holding me back from buying a MacBook right now.

  • And?

That describes 95%+ of the population. I’m a software developer and feel largely the same way as OP. You don’t need to know the intricacies of something to enjoy using it.

Stop gatekeeping shit because people don’t want to be as invested in it as you.

  • Not really

Most people don’t care how their shit works, they just want it to work. People like OP, who seem to have a semi-casual outlook on it aren’t going to need to know how or why anything works.

  • As long as innocent schoolchildren are being murdered in cold blood by people who should not have access to guns we won’t stop.

Americans are the only ones with this problem, and we’re also the only ones with this lax of gun control. There’s a pretty strong correlation here.

I don’t care about your right to own firearms if it impedes the right to life for children.

  • As the other commenter said, this is a good precaution to have in a server OS. My FreeNAS/TrueNAS setup also require that.

For consumer OS, no it’s less than ideal, but for enterprise users it’s a very good feature to have

  • First looks don’t look super positive. Sounds like they’re going down the enshittification route though. I figure if I’ll pay I’m going to pay for adobe since I really do hate how much I like using their products
