  • How's the quality of the sleep you're getting? I feel better on six hours of decent sleep than I do on 8 of the alternative... I have very poor relationship with sleep - specifically the staying asleep part. Better sleep hygiene has helped, but have started taking a mushroom supplement recently that's made a dramatic difference.

  • And international as well. Vaguely reassuring to know we're not alone...

Honestly though, I look at what my kids do (or don't do) at school and the actual learning appears to be waaaay less than what it was when I was at school (admittedly we were still using slates and writing script by candlelight). Our usual "what did you do at school" conversation is typically at least 50% "non-learning" - videos, games etc. Yes, kids still learn through these (the Cahoot quizzes are great) but this shouldn't be at the expense of the basics.

  • To be fair, this has been pretty standard corporate-speak in most industries for a long time. It's (typically) referring to giving people a reason to stay with your product - we used to use this exact phrase in reference to our complementary training programmes that were included with the product.

But, this is HP, so locked in means LOCKED IN. So, fuck HP 😂

  • Just finishing up a very nice 4 day break away to the Marlborough Sounds with the fam. My last chance to get away before the silly season starts for us. Good weather, good food, lots of fun and laughter

  • I have two kids who are so different in temperament that's it's just not funny. Considering they are only separated by 2 years, one has to assume their upbringings were pretty similar, so that leaves genetics as the primary driver. If you take this to its logical extreme, you would have to find people whose genetic combination is such that no amount of nurture and 'good' upbringing could ever compensate.

So yes, I believe there are some people out there who are just fundamentally at odds with what society would define as a 'good person', from the outset. Horrible thought (Divergent, anyone?!) but they're sort of buggered from the start aren't they...

  • I have super in three different countries from 20 years of living abroad, so working on consolidating that. Beyond that, putting in some extra to KiwiSaver here and simultaneously working to build a self sufficient lifestyle to keep costs down - and us fit with any kind of luck! Very aware that that only works so long as we're fit and well, so much of what we're putting is designed to be as hands off as possible.

So, plan A is working and living off our land as long as we're able, plan B is then hitting the Super, with Plan C being selling the land and downsizing.

  • Cheers for this, that certainly aligns with other advice (and, if I'm honest, my own thinking, even though I'd love to go down the self hosted route)

I already have a subscription to MS365 (which is used for Word, Excel and OneDrive only) - would that already do what I need, or are there bolt on products to look into?

Will look into support options - we're rural, so there's a ”local" guy we use for hardware issues, but could be good to supplement him with an online expert.
