    Oh god. Remember microfiche catalogs? Searching for shit on those things was fun. No, not really. Funny enough, the industry I work in, occasionally I run into scans of microfiche slides. They are so bad.

    I agree we had our chance. We also had a chance to make everyone’s lives better, and let greed control everything. Well, not we, as in you and me, but the collective we.

  • I remember when I was younger and the hole in the ozone was a big deal. We did something. Same with then I was a young kid smog was so bad that we had “smog days” (similar to snow days) where we weren’t allowed to play outside, or have recess or lunch outside. CA did something about it. There used to be a chance, but now…..it’s hard to see anything under a hopeful lens.

    I needed a job, any job, so I took a position below my experience level at the time. I wasn’t very happy about it. Like I said, I needed the job.

  • No, no, no, no. You’ve got it all wrong. With the payments on pause, that meant they would never have to repay the loans. So, of course, that means go buy ALL the things.

    There are probably plenty of people who got screwed by Covid, and had no choice but to pay for stuff with credit, but I’d guess a lot of people thought the pause meant it was gone.

  • I don’t doubt that at all. It’s hard for everyone. SD and CA big cities as a whole are the destination for a lot of homeless/unwanted either willingly or “forcefully”. Largely because of our temperate climate and “liberal” policies, so we see a lot of it that we wouldn’t, if people didn’t explicitly come here for that reason.

    I was mostly trying to comment on how SD was vs how it is now. It’s definitely MUCH safer here than it was in the 80s/90s. Early 90s was bad here, but people don’t remember, or more likely, are transplants and weren’t here for it.

  • Totally. It’s definitely area dependent. I was speaking to San Diego as a whole, more than downtown specifically. I personally wouldn’t go to downtown SD by myself, to like walk around. But, I never would have since I remember it back in the day.

    Just like you didn’t go to certain neighborhood here unless you had a reason. My husband doesn’t remember SD like that, so whenever someone invites us to one of those neighborhoods (which most have been heavily gentrified now) my first reaction is always like uh….fuck no.

    Shit even parts PT Loma/sports arena are are getting pretty awful again. Sports area was okish for a while, but there are SO many encampments in there now.

  • San Diego used to be a lot worse in a lot of ways. Honestly people have short memories. Admittedly, downtown is starting to look like 80s-90s downtown again, in a lot of ways though.

    I can honestly say that there are a lot of terrible people out there, but in my experience San Diego always manages to come together when it matters. And honestly, in most day to day interactions, the vast majority of people I interact with are pretty nice overall.

  • Yup. Basically the same thing. I got run over by a deer in my Miata. Car was still drivable-ish but the windshield was smashed on the passenger side (along with a lot of ultimately non critical parts, largely cosmetic). I was trying to decide whether I should try to limp it to my shop (like 3 miles away on low traffic residential roads) or try to get a tow, from a very unsafe location to be broken down, on a highway. I started the conversation “I’m fine, but I just hit a deer”. Imo it’s the polite way to treat bad news about loved ones.

  • Not the same by my husband used to start to tell me something bad, without any other info. As he’d be telling me whatever it was, I’d be tallying the cost in my head. When you’re listening to a story, and stressing the fuck out about the tens of thousands, or more it was going to cost to fix it, it’s terrible and an emotional roller coaster you don’t need. Eventually, after explaining multiple times, what he was doing to me, it finally clicked. So now he’ll tell me things like “so, I broke the blah blah, but I was able to fix it for $10 and some bloody knuckles.” Then he tells his story, and I’m able to actually listen and participate in then conversation.

    He also used to tell me stuff like “oh btw we need to talk about xxx” and then try to get off the phone. Xxx was always something that could be really bad or just funny story. I broke him of that habit too. Now it’s more like “everything’s fine, just need to talk about xxx” this one’s like someone telling you “we need to talk” and then leaving you hanging for a day or two imo.

    Only thing I call tell you is to talk to him. Explain in great detail exactly how stressful it is to you. He SHOULD be willing to change his action to stop hurting you. If he’s not, base your choices off that.

  • I’m just saying that for me, personally, I care FAR more about afternoon light, and how early the sun sets, than I do about morning sun. In the winter (February) the sun comes up around 7am here. I still wake up and do my normal routine. I don’t care that the sun doesn’t come up until 3 hours after I woke up. What I DO care about is the sun setting before 5pm. I’m absolutely miserable, and ready to sleep at about 6pm.

    Regardless, people that watch “news” 24/7 are brainwashed in the same ways as eachother, even if the message is different.

  • So, article says you need sunlight within an hour of waking up. Sunrise has been about 6 at lately. If I slept until 5am I’d feel terrible. I honestly don’t care how long after I wake up the sun comes up, as long as it comes up for the majority of the day. BUT the amount of time in the afternoon that the suns up matters FAR more to me. I very much prefer DST.

    Personally, I do/feel MUCH much better in summer months, mostly because the sun is typically at full strength, and bright. I don’t use artificial lights unless absolutely necessary (they are a migraine trigger for me). BUT, I wake up at about 4am, get out for a run (minimum of 30 minutes) and then start my day.
