  • I lurked, it was super interesting, definitely a lot of cool people. Quite a few pretty intense people too.

  • With the current administration, I'd argue we are definitely in "faith based" money right now.

It was originally based on a gold reserve and then taken off to become a fiat currency. Trump is talking about potentially not paying back debts owned to other governments. Definitely sounds faith based to me, there's nothing hard backing it.

  • Ok. I was hoping to talk to them about contributing some specific features to help fight against bots and include some privacy tech, but I don't have the mental bandwidth for drama.

  • Where in the article did it say that? Did you read the article?

  • Welcome 🙂 this feels similar to old reddit, but a bit less nerdy and a bit more political than reddit in 2014 or so, but the times have also changed.

  • All my personal devices are named "AHE"+n. So the abbreviation for "at heart engineer"+ a letter signifying the device. So my phone is "AHEM", my laptop is "AHEL", my desktop is "aheo" (O for office), my server is "ahes".

  • I cancelled mine recently and will actively try to avoid using it. They also need competition.

  • I've had a Subaru CVT for 10+ years with over 200k miles no issues. Anecdotal yes, but I've grown fond of the CVT feel, it's smooth, I like it.

  • I'd love to be able to even just see if the doors are locked without a monthly fee.

The USB c connection is on the passenger side of the screen in the top right corner, so doing wired Android auto is pretty annoying

  • The main things that bother me are maps, remote start (which can be done from the keys but it's a pain in the ass). When you start the vehicle a screen comes up that asks you to subscribe for maps, and then Android auto connects like 50% of the time and randomly disconnects when you are driving.

There's a bunch of other little features that are mostly convenience things, but I bought the vehicle, and I understand they have to run some infrastructure but it's not much and I could just connect through wifi or Bluetooth and they wouldn't have to run any infra.

Also, it's $15 a month which is a rip off. If it was $20 a year, thats annoying, but it's more tolerable. $15 a month to be able to use the maps that are built in is a crime.

The big ass screen is worthless unless I'm using Android auto.

  • Modern cars, I think because of safety laws and "trade secrets", can be quite a pain the reverse engineer. It's notoriously difficult to even interface with any of the chips in any of the onboard computers in the first place, let alone reverse engineer what's going on and modify it. On top of that some car companies, like Toyota, are starting to add HMACs to all the messages they send on the CAN bus, so even if you did figure out everything, unless you get the signing keys every message will be ignored. On top of that, it'll void your warrant, which I know some people don't care about, but for a new car that you are having to depend on, its another hurdle.

  • I just bought a Toyota and they locked a lot of features behind an app with a monthly fee, absolute fucking pricks. The whole auto industry is going to shit.

  • And you can just as easily fake that data. Unless an image is cryptographicly signed right off the sensor, I wouldn't put any weight in something being real or fake nowadays. Is this image probably fake, ya, but that's using common sense not a "fake ai detector".

  • I agree. I'm glad you made this post and are actually interacting in the comments to be constructive.

There's a book I was introduced to last year called "good strategy bad strategy" that is worth a read, most of it's somewhat obvious and a little dated as far as examples, but the framing of how to think about strategy is pretty solid. Its an easy read, and like most non fiction books, you get most of the meat in the first half.

  • I'm a straight white male that leans left, and ya, I've had friends (who, it's sad to say, are hard to talk to now) who were center go right because they were welcomed with open arms by the right and shat on by the left. Before Elon went on a rant about the dude trying to rescue those trapped kids, before Joe Rogan started leaning into the propaganda for ratings, and when Bernie had a chance, we were on the same page... But since trump got involved, Bernie got shut out, and (it's obvious now) the rich started weaponising the media against us, we have very little media that we consume that's the same.

I left reddit, rogan and switched to Lemmy and breaking points, and they have leaned in harder to Rogan and we're drawn down the rabbit hole of tim pool. Everytime I've tried to reason with them I get "what about isms", "the left is more violent", "the left hates everyone", and borderline conspiracy theory non-sense. Even my own mom was pretty center left when I was growing up and now she's bought into the non-sense because that's the media she sees.

The right tells good tales, and a lot of people on the left are gate keeping, so... Just by fact of barrier to entry the right is going to be easier to drift towards. I hope we get our shit together.
