  • EEE is a tool to steal users, not products. In the case of Microsoft, using EEE tactics with Linux is to convince people that they can stay on a Windows machine and get their work done, so they don't need a Linux computer. In the Fediverse, thr value of stealing users is much more obvious.

  • According to this study, smoking costs our economy ~0.88% of our GDP. That works out to in the ballpark of $600 per capita. Would you change your opinion if you had $600 sitting in front of you? I disagree that it's a slippery slope, anti-vax, smokers, and overeaters cost a lot of money, and the rest of us foot the bill.

  • Conspiracy theories are a mental health problem, not an information problem. When Obama was in office, there were lots of conspiracies about the oligarchic deep state. Now, an actual oligarch is running the country and essentially self-appointed himself in a position where he can remove any dissent against him, but conspiracy theorists have been quiet about it.

Conspiracy theorists invent things that aren't real because being "in the know" is exciting, not because of the actual information they may or may not be receiving.

  • "Biggest premier of 2025" being the key distinction. As in "Disney's only new streaming content since January 1st is the biggest release all year"

Kinda lame how Agatha outperformed it, there wasn't anything remarkable about it.

  • I only want my meat to be raised by a cow on a feedlot while covered in manure and constantly smelling so awful, I would gag if I ever went. Then I want that cow's greatest mental stimulation to be the one time he climbed on top of the 1 meter pile of manure and could see further than any other cow, and then proceed to stick his head back into the giant trough of corn that's been pre-mixed with antibiotics because corn is not a natural food source for cows. That's what meat is supposed to be, as god intended.

  • Back in the early days of Tesla when they still had the only cool car they ever made, the roadster, they were so proud of their near fireproof battery with lots of smaller cells. I never heard about a Roadster fire, and the first few model Ss were the safest cars on the road. I guess Elon's "fire everyone and save money" strategy took a few years to show through.

  • It makes you feel like it's really happening. You're up North in the mountains, and you need to get back to camp to talk to a friend, so you ride your horse, and get stuck behind a wide carriage for a bit, and the trees are close to the trail for a while, so you can't easily get around without getting a faceful of branches. One you start making it down the mountain, you find a nice looking deer and think "that hide would look great on some boots", so you pull out your rifle to hunt. Unfortunately, you're up wind, so the deer ran away very early on, but you couldn't be deterred, so you chased after it, and eventually landed a good shot. You take the meat to the butcher, and he comments that he's greatful you brought it in so fresh this time. You wonder why you ended up here, oh yeah, you wanted to go meet up with a friend, and it's been over an hour and you're just less than halfway there, so you look up at the sky and wonder how long it'll take, it's a very pretty sky at sunset, so you decide to make camp for the night.

  • That's just like...a normal hotdog. You might as well call it a Rockies Dog or a Diamondbacks Dog. At least a Chicago Dog is a fairly unique thing you couldn't accidentally confuse with someone just putting toppings on a dog like normal.

  • They're government employees, so they're paid on the GS scale, plus a cost-of-living adjustment by region. Of course they're making over 100k, that just means they're a college graduate with about 10 years of experience living in DC.
