  • If you don't trust me to the point where you're going to point 2 security cameras at me while I checkout, and this is your idea of "more efficient", then I can grocery shop somewhere else.

  • An orbit is analogous to position. Trying to predict the position of planets proved difficult to do accurately. People had figured out velocity a long time ago, but no one had ever explored the concept of describing an orbit just from the accelerations of the planets. It turns out acceleration has a fairly simple equation, and in order to get back to the observable thing of orbits, you need to integrate it twice. Newton was the first person to describe acceleration and to use it to predict the motion of planets. Especially for predicting Mars, it was essential because Jupiter is massive enough and close enough to alter its orbit, so simple Kepler's Laws aren't sufficient to describe the orbit.

  • dd literally has the nickname "disk destroyer", and it is a well-earned title. Once you have a bad default choice and no pre-installed alternative, you'll have at minimum 3 competing tools. Just the way the world works.

  • In my experience, if you didn't write the function that creates the list, there's a solid chance it could be None too, and if you try to check the length of None, you get an error. This is also why returning None when a function fails is bad practice IMO, but that doesn't seem to stop my coworkers.

  • Yes, the supreme court ruled that any "official act" of the president is legal, so unless the supreme court wants to either

    1. Undo that ruling, or
    2. Rule that this isn't an official act,

Then Trump is 100% in the clear.

  • Kind of crazy to me that governments aren't massively interested in hosting their own fediverse instances. It has huge appeal of providing announcements on a broader platform while also controlling your instance and still being from a .gov source.

  • All time high was right before the election at ~45k, and now it's around 40k, so about 11% down. Not sure where you came up with 30%, but it never even got close to that. A 30% drop would be around 31k, and the lowest it hit was around 37k. We all hate Trump, but don't just make up numbers for internet points.
