  • American commenting from across the pond, but it this looks like an attempt to give rhetorical cover to further immigration restrictions specifically targeted at North Africa, expanding their policies through the cooperation of other EU members.

Italy may need immigrants, but from what I've seen thus far, her government only wants those are who are white and straight.

  • I love boosting good news, especially given the enormous amount of Russian disinformation surrounding the "failure" and "slow going" of the offensive.

It was never going to be quick, or easy, and I think that the extraordinary successes of earlier Ukrainian counter-offensives set expectations higher than the reality on the ground.

But in the balance, Ukraine went from having half its territory captured by the 2nd strongest army in the world to knocking them back on their knees and retaking half of what was lost in the space of less than two years. That's an incredible success in the face of overwhelming odds, even with NATO and EU support. One only has to look at the Russian takeovers in Eastern Europe after WWII to get a sense of how unique it is that Ukraine was able to not only resist, but drive back the invaders.

From California and all Americans who support freedom, Слава Україні!

  • Yeah - I ran a public forum as part of a publishing non-profit for about 12 years, so I've got nothing but sympathy for the mods.

Feel like telling a bit of what it was like, so here goes.

We got a fraction of the traffic Reddit did and the moderation was without a doubt the most difficult and least rewarding part of the effort - took up between 50% - 90% of our time, depending on how pissed off particular users were.

I finally gave up after the third wave of Turkish hackers (who were pissed that we had posted pictures of a broken window from a riot in Cyprus) hit us in a wave of spam accounts, ddos attacks, and finally hacked our shared service provider (I was soooo pissed about this, as I'd spend months hardening our site from their previous attacks, and I'd been relying on our hosting provider to have their backend secure) to hijack the website. I'm pretty sure they were Edrogan funded with a mandate, as the picture was really innocuous and their response to it was completely over the top. We were a small art & literature website. I can only imagine what mods on Reddit go through on a daily basis.

  • Glad you liked! You should check out more bluegrass if you like what Cleveland was playing. If you dig the style on the Highwayman, check out more Johnny Cash - he built an amazing legacy of work, and wasn't afraid of genre jumping - here's him doing a cover of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt.

  • You're thinking primarily country pop, and I agree with your assessment - most of it's crap. That being said, if the only country you know is what you've been exposed to on the radio, you're missing out on some amazing musicianship. Since I dig sharing music that breaks (or makes) a mold, here's some country pieces that you might dig:

"Lee Highway Blues" - Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper

    Jolene - Dolly Parton

The Highwayman - Wayland Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristoffersen

  • Mods are certainly nicer, that's for sure, and thus far, except in in ugly instances, everyone here has been intelligent and thoughtful, even in disagreement.

I think that federation here really helps - seems like the toxicity seems naturally get siloed as instances defederate from bad actors and users are blocked, and it really dilutes the impact a power-tripping mod can have on content, as it's far to easy to find another relevant community or instance that will accept your post.

  • Fuck this racist bullshit. This is a facetious justification cribbed from a revolting pro-slavery screed in 1857.

There is no benefit in slavery for the slave. None. Any skills they learned could have just as easily been learned when free.

  • They're claiming a staffing and funding hurdle to get the existing laws enforced. If the department has been starved for funds to the point where it can't do its job, who made that decision, and more importantly, who donated to their political campaign?

This reeks of backdoor politics on the part of the landlords. De-funding an enforcement agency when a law holds up in court is a tried and true form of regulatory capture.

  • Forum management 101

    Lesson One:

1% of your readers produce 99% of your content.

Only about 1% of the population producing content is interested in enduring the shitshow of toxicity that comes with moderation.

    Don't piss them off.

    End of Lesson

  • Which one of you motherfuckers is stealing 5% of my market share?

    Goddamn squirrels.

  • Holy crap that brings back memories. I played that game for an entire summer in the 80s. It was all the rage because Robotech episodes had finally made it to American TV, Transformers were the hot new toy, and this was the first game where you could pilot one and actually transform into a jet.

  • GO BABY GO

  • I agree, but note I said the general election, not the primary, which is where I do see it working. He simply needs more than that to appeal to independents in the general election, without whom, he cannot win.

  • I just can't see personal vengeance being a winning platform for the general election in 2024, and I've yet to see any other policy proposal put forward by Trump.

I note that this isn't a new statement (original was in 2020 per the article), but a video conflating older Trump statements, compiled by his supporters, that he then "re-Truthed." It's a clever way of getting past the restrictions of calling for violence without getting yourself in legal trouble.

It's also indicative of a deliberate attempt to spur individuals to commit acts of domestic terrorism, especially when seen in the context of the recent Nick Fuentes rally. Sadly, I can only see these calls intensifying as we approach the general election, unless by some miracle the Justice Department manages to put him in a prison where he can't use his phone.

Be safe and smart out there and protect each other. Nobody deserves to die for this slime.

  • I agree with you on this point - there could have been more effective messaging, but I'll take what I can get - it's a significant step up from "fuck Spez".

In my original post I suggested the more recognizable and iconic Lemmy and Mastodon logos as they have wider recognition than the concept of the Fediverse, and would draw people to specific instances as well as making a statement.

This is a vanity project, nothing more nothing less.

Yeah, but lets be honest now - 95% of social media falls under that classification. The 5% that isn't is mostly found here, so I view this particular vanity project as a mission of mercy for those who are unaware of the excellence of the alternative in the Fediverse.

  • I fully support this action, having been a cheerleader for it in a previous thread. For those saying this is driving traffic to Reddit, I'd like to repeat the counterpoint that:

I agree with you in principle, but speaking from strictly a strategic perspective, /r/place presents a vulnerability that can be exploited without contributing what Reddit really needs to regain its status - content.

In the context of a social media war, this means we can use the space to peel off users who wouldn't have been introduced to the Fediverse otherwise, with no risk of harming ourselves or providing Reddit more than a temporary moment of attention. There's been a concerted effort to remove links to Fediverse resources in many subs, and for a great deal of redditors, they're in the dark about what the Fediverse represents and how much better it is than Reddit.

Plus it's just cool to fuck with Spez, and the Fediverse is so cool in general that I'd love to see what the effect would be if we united against a common enemy.
