  • If you can, add a 1-star review in Play Store for Google Maps while you're at it. And a comment why.

  • Gulf of Mexico.

  • Gas prices. That's the weak spot. If Americans' gas pump prices go waaaay up they can and will oust this administration sooner or later. We need to impose absolutely punishing export fees on oil and gas, using the revenues gained to protect any other sectors they slap tariffs on (currently steel and aluminum). The big oil companies can absorb the hit, they make insane profits, no sympathy for them -- we should pass emergency regs to prevent them from passing on the expense by laying off workers. If they want to do business in Canada and access our resources, they also need to help defend Canada in our time of need.

  • ^^ this. We need to explore all options for other trade partners. No going back at this point unless things really change for the long term down south. We cannot rely on or trust them any more.

  • Gotta hand it to him, even though he pissed off most of us (and I will never forgive him for reneging on electoral reform and reigning in CSIS/CSE for domestic surveillance), he's at least appearing to do the right things for our security during his swan song.

  • Immediately impose 25% export tariffs on oil and gas to the US, all proceeds directed to support the Canadian steel and aluminum industry.

Oil companies in Canada can suck it and help preserve our country, they're rich enough to take it. Pass emergency legislation to bar them from laying off oil & gas workers. If they squeal, call them out as fascist enablers and make it 30% unless they shut up and agree.

  • Thank you for being open to the possibilities of that. I wish none of this were happening and feel for those in the US who are going to have to endure what is to come. I can only count myself fortunate I'm not actually there, and only adjacent.

  • He must know the end is near, and the idea of his grave being pissed on repeatedly until his headstone has crumbled and he is forgotten... bothers him somehow. Boo hoo.

  • If so, then call him what he is: a Quisling.

  • Wow. Really. Fair enough, that's ... disappointing. Is there no other regulation/law they could have used to force the issue?

I'm not American so I'll plead ignorance here :/

Of course it could be abused, unless it were worded carefully. All right, what other levers could the Dems use to force the issue (which I assert still needs to be done -- get access to regain control of these agencies from DOGE, or make them cross the line to force if they will not back down peacefully. Otherwise the administrative, bloodless coup will continue to its completion.)

  • Not wanting to normalize violence after every federal election... I kind of get. It takes a lot of evidence to justify doing that (and to be clear, it's clear to any sane person that the right-wings had not a shred of real evidence to justify their attempted insurrection).

But, as just happened last week, Congressional reps who absolutely had the right to enter a building they oversaw were illegally barred by DHS and un-uniformed goons from DOGE. No inquiries or committees required -- it was on its face an illegal act. They should have pushed physically right then and there for entry, and either gained entry peacefully, or had cameras rolling if the fascists took the first step to physical violence so the next step could be taken. As it is, their useless finger-wagging and walking home with their tail between their legs has only allowed this coup to progress even further.

  • They took an oath to defend their nation against all threats, foreign AND domestic. "The bare minimum" they must do is to physically go to the doors of department buildings they are supposed to have authority over, accompanied by armed police or guards willing to back them up, and demand entrace.

Make no mistake, the first punch or shot MUST be from the DOGE/GOP/MAGA fascists, if they fail to back down... but the issue must be FORCED otherwise they win by default. IFF fascists first take the step to violence, then the response must be 500% right back at them, or THEY WIN BY DEFAULT.

  • Hah! That's a good one. Public transportation is SOCIALISM remember? And it would help poor and/or brown people so they'd never seriously do that.

  • Yeah, well fuck her IMHO. And the oil companies too. They're rich enough to endure a few months of economic leverage applied where it counts. If they squeal (and we know they will), well then they need to be called out and forced to publicly take a side in this whole situation.

    EDIT: uncensored :P

  • I hope Canada applies a massive export tax to oil & gas.. and redistributes the revenue to steel and aluminum workers here to ease the effect of the tariffs on same.

Make the US people feel higher gas prices and they'll turn against him. History has shown this is the best way to sink a president and his party's support.

  • with only Sen. Mitch McConnell breaking GOP ranks to oppose her

Oh so NOW you're worried, it would seem, about your legacy and whether you stood against fascism?

Mitch McConnell, you will always be remembered for obstructing, gaslighting, packing the SCOTUS with toadies, and then flip-flopping on impeachment and accountability for your party, the insurrection, and enabling the orange menace to return to power. Forever. People will piss on your grave, and they will be justified.

    TOO LATE.

  • Oh, they know exactly what they're doing. They are attempting (and apparently succeeding) to bulldoze their way through an administrative coup.

  • I'm a doofus, I thought I'd cleared my browser cache but I hadn't apparently.

    https://old.lemmy.ca/ loads fine now.

  • Your comment prompted me to search and I found this util: https://github.com/fumiyas/qrc

Obviously results in a larger ASCII blob than a shortened URL, but would allow use on any terminal.

  • It just ... never loads the page.

I'll see what kind of debug info I can get later today, sure, and post whatever I find here. Thanks.

EDIT: And to clarify this issue doesn't occur if I visit www.lemmy.ca (default theme).
