  • They're not that expensive, at least not up-front. A guy I know bought a sailboat for a few thousand dollars, but the catch was that it was almost 50 years old and needed a lot of repairs. He saved money by doing the repairs himself, but the $400 per month slip fee was still too much for him eventually and he sold the boat.

  • When I visited India, there were people who spoke English to me with such a strong accent that I didn't even realize that they were speaking English. Bias against people speaking with an Indian accent is real, but so is the need to facilitate communication.

  • I want to live in the woods in New Hampshire again some day. It's a beautiful place and also a place where the state and local governments don't make me grind my teeth in frustration all the time*. I would have a house, a lot of land, and no neighbors except for pine trees.

I had most of that already and I left, because I was very lonely - I think I talked to another person face to face about once every few weeks. I thought I would be OK with that because I was used to being alone, but having no family, no friends, and a 100% remote job was too much for me. Apparently even I start going crazy if I am that isolated. Now I live somewhere I really don't like (New York City) but I'm close to my family.

*New Hampshire is a rather libertarian state. Taxes are low but the town where I lived (population 15,000) didn't provide water, sewers, or garbage collection. Many things are legal that aren't legal in most other places. For example, you can drive without insurance, set off fireworks, and do almost anything with a gun except shoot another person. The state motto is "Live free or die," and I would tell my guests that as long as they did one or the other, the state's duty to them would be satisfied.

  • I don't think Conan is a D&D barbarian because (at least in the Howard stories) he does not go into a state of battle rage and his fighting style is not characterized by a focus on offense at the expense of defense. I'd play him as a pure Fighter with stealth expertise.

  • Yes, but even Skynet would probably like me better than the average woman does. Skynet > human woman > AM.

(I never know if explicitly saying that I'm not being serious is necessary on the internet or just ruins the joke, but here I'm going to ruin the joke.)

  • The fact that the salute is so offensive, they did it so blatantly, and their denial was so disingenuous is the point. It's a demonstration of power. They can do a Nazi salute and their opponents can't punish them. They can deny that they did a Nazi salute and their opponents can't control the narrative. If they did something more subtle, then people might think that they weren't facing any consequences because their opponents were giving them the benefit of the doubt. With the Nazi salute there is no doubt. The only explanation for why they aren't facing any consequences is that their opponents are powerless.

  • There's no benefit to cutting contact as a matter of principle. It won't impede Trump even a little and it probably won't change your dad's political views either. Is he willing to avoid talking to you about politics? Do you enjoy his company when he isn't talking about politics? If the answers to these questions are "yes" then I see no good reason to hurt him and yourself by cutting contact.

I think that every two people in my family have serious disagreements about some issue, but the world wouldn't become a better place if we all argued and then stopped talking to each other.

  • I didn't think I would ever say this, but here it is: I wish that modern Republicans thought more about what Reagan would have done.

(Eisenhower would be an even better Republican to remember now. He would be ashamed to see his party and this country as they are today.)
