Everybody is taking the stupid bait and arguing the wrong thing.

Companies don’t think it makes them more efficient, they don’t care about culture much, but they do care about layoffs.

This is stealth layoffs. You get x% of people to outright quit because of the mandate. Another y% you can “fire” for non compliance with the “return to office”

And then your layoff is a TON cheaper because none of those groups require severance, and it plays better with everyone that still works at the company because the layoff is smaller or non existent.

Get a decent machine and run true as scale.

All of these things can be installed as helm/k8s “apps” and they almost self configure.

They update aswell.

It’s spectacular.

Then throw drives at it.

I have one “pool” of storage that’s a raid 10 for things I care about and then a giant zfs “jbod “ that has no backups for just mass storage of things that I don’t really care about.

While your isp can’t read the data over the VPN, they CAN see that you’re using a VPN and intentionally slow down your connection with traffic shaping because you’re putting so much data through the vpn.

In many unzip utilities, they use temp files that you wouldn’t be paying attention to. These temp files will contain your credentials and you won’t know where they are or if they got deleted.

Right? Like “make sure you get a warrant” isn’t a hard answer.

The problem is that Tailscale gives your server a “magic” ip, which isn’t the same one as on your local network. On your local network, do you access them by port? Or reverse proxy?

While I don’t disagree, I don’t think most of them are beyond reason….

But their needs are small enough and poorly communicated enough that the mainstream ignores them. It’s a tragedy of the commons.

For example, the incels mostly want love and acceptance, and they confuse that for entitlement to sex for reasons I won’t get into here. Dealing with that is hard and requires a lot of community effort that is hard to justify on a spreadsheet. Racist folk often are disadvantaged in some way and then decide that it’s the fault of “x people”. What they actually need is to feel like they can contribute to society and have value unto themselves just as they are. Homophobes are often gay folk in the closet because of internal issues from childhood etc… they need to spend some time accepting themselves.

None of these problems encompass everyone in “group x” But represent a portion of them. None of these issues have value in fixing on their own when we can be much more cost effective by ignoring them. They just don’t budget nicely.

Everyone is the hero of their own story. The greatest villain in your life thinks they’re the hero in their own life. It’s really hard to see in your own life where you’re the villain.

So I agree with you 100%, I just have compassion for their struggles.
