  • Dubba's third and fourth term.

It's kinda ironic, I don't know whether this reflects how the guy actually thought about his presidency, but when he was in office there was a lot of chatter about the kind of "legacy" his administration would have. I'm fairly certain now that he's gonna be one of those overlooked presidents, seen as a caretaker-administration to all the shit started by GW Bush and a preamble to a lot of what Trump has ran wild with.

Maybe the history books also mention he passed a healthcare bill inspired by the Heritage Foundation and insurance lobbyists.

  • Cursed to look into the great mysteries of existence with a mind high tuned for pattern recognition and projecting familiar narratives.

Is that something beyond our current understanding? No, no, it's just a familiar desktop environment. But fuck you if you project a name and a face into the unknown. That's backwards and primitive!

  • Currently, our collective behavior is parasitic and destructive to the environment, yes. But it's important to draw a distinction here - a virus or bacterial infection or a parasite are locked into their respective strategies. They cannot help being what they are.

We don't get that excuse. Humans are the ultimate generalists; we specialized into learning and communicating new behaviors between ourselves. Unlike the flu or a ringworm, we have the capacity to change how we interact with the environment.

  • The French city of Lyon has taken a major step toward digital sovereignty by officially starting a move away from Microsoft software. . The city is gradually set to replace Microsoft Office with open source alternatives like ONLYOFFICE and switch from Windows to Linux-based operating systems to reduce dependency on proprietary offerings.

never heard of ONLYOFFICE, any good?

  • Do you count the Byzantine as separate or the same as Rome?

Your talking about structures comprising huge numbers of people across multiple generations. There is no clear "death". Just the gradual shifting from one set of conditions to another. Pick any line in the sand, declare it to be the "end" of an empire, and you'll still find people living under its rules, speaking the language, and using the currency well afterward.

Hell, look at Britain. No longer the globe-strangling power that they were, but it's still the same country with the same rules and government and money.

  • Self Driving is only safer than people in absolutely pristine road conditions with no inclement weather and no construction. As soon as anything disrupts "normal" road conditions, self driving becomes significantly more dangerous than a human driving.

  • Lighting is usually a good giveaway.

Take this alpaca(?). Standing outside, casting a relatively clear shadow, and yet still mostly lit uniformly. The background doesn't necessarily contradict where the sun is supposed to be, but it also doesn't seem give any support to it either.

  • Terrorism is internationally recognized as when a group or organization unaffiliated with a recognized government uses violence to achieve a political goal. "Terrorist state" is a contradiction in terms.

Netanyahu is leading a genocide and starting wars, all to avoid the regular democratic and legal process of Israel. Why are you carrying water for him?

  • They renewed the PATRIOT act while Obama was in office.

"Bogged down" is an excuse. The military is a logistics machine. If it takes longer to pull out, then it takes longer, fine. But "bogged down" is the kind of half-asses face saving language you trot out when you don't actually want to leave, but don't want to look like you gung-ho for staying.

Obama wasn’t perfect—not even great. But, those are weird things to lay on him.

yeah, yeah, fuck me for remembering what he campaigned on, right?

  • more than that, Obama had enough of a public mandate, he could have rolled back everything Bush did. The Afghanistan invasion, the extraordinary rendition, the "enhanced interrogation", the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act. He could have ended all of those.

He could have had a historic presidency, could have redefined what the United States was going to be in the 21st century. Instead, he let the previous administration decide it for him.
