People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?
The customer called it racist. The person you were responding to said that discrimination would be a better descriptor, but also that the customer was still silly for thinking they had a case because of it, regardless of what words the customer used.
It takes a certain kind of person to get upset that a store isn't treating you like an employee. What's next, demanding access to the private areas? Wait, people already do that too :(
It's not exactly rocket science to avoid vandalizing an active temple.
There are other things literally everywhere that the 17 year old could have damaged instead.

I think a good start before all of that would be for struggling instances to tell their user base that they are struggling.
Not going to lie, awards like that would probably make me start looking for another new platform again. I don't want that part of reddit, personally. I want comments that are there to be there, not comments that are only there to get the most positive feedback. For me, doing this would take lemmy further away from being an open forum, and move it closer towards being a lame popularity contest. I can only see the same jokes so many times.

Before I start my reply, please keep in mind that the following is not intended to be targeted at you.
It's easy to get wrapped up in what you see on your main feed, but there are a few things that I would like you (and more people) to keep in mind.
The fediverse has been it's own thing for years before reddit did it's thing last month. Some of these users might have never been reddit people, and I think that should be ok. Those people shouldn't have to push for reddit 2.0, because this was already great to them. This is/was their "reddit". For some of them, this has always been the place to go to discuss tech stuff. Imagine having a community that you love for years, only to have a sudden burst of people show up and demand that you change almost everything. Your interface, your security processes, and even your own content. I am not one of those long time users, but I can understand why this would be frustrating for them.
As to why some of us are so against mass social media. For me, it's not even that I'm against other people using it. You do you. It is frustrating though, to feel like you can never escape it. When you finally find a "safe" media, it suddenly has mass media trying to get in, along with people wanting that space to become more like said mass-media. You start to wonder why you can't have one place that stays mass media free. Just one.
(I'm not saying you do this, but I see it all the time.) We also have people who complain about the lack of content variety, only for them to suddenly switch and say that it's not even worth trying to create a community around it. If everyone who loves a certain topic has the mindset to never even try, that topic will never become a fleshed out community. I appreciate when people do post the stuff that they want to see, so I'll happily accept those complaints. Thank you for not doing that.
Like many others have said, this is a long way from being fully completed. I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty cool to be able to experience the start of something potentially huge. The fediverse is also growing beyond just reddit refugees and Meta. Some governments are even creating their own networks now. I am eager to see how this will play out in the long run. I hope you find more of the content you are seeking soon, and I hope that you experience fewer angry comments. Thank you for giving your thoughts.

There are apparently a lot of different rumours spreading around about this peacock and possibly others. The closest "zoo" is about a 15 minute car ride away.
A nearby park used to have them as part of a petting zoo, but that closed down before 2019.
One of the rumours is apparently that they hide out in the brush in the city outskirts and have been around this whole time.
Some theorize they they are all across Ontario, escaped from 80's zoos. They can allegedly survive winter if they have shelter like a shed.
Some theorized that they must be escaping from a private owner who never reveals themselves. This is apparently the "neighbourhood peacock ".

I think that some of those resources would probably continue to dwindle, even if we all just dissapeared today. That's a big part of what's so scary about this. Climate change is progressing beyond what we can "undo". Now, they're also seeing greenhouse gases being released from melting ice and soil. The heating won't suddenly stop if we all died today.
Many living organisms require certain living conditions. Who's to say that this heat won't eventually start to destroy the chances of growing most crops? What if these massive forest fires become a lot more common? How many animal species will die? More floods, droughts, storms, and severe heat events are all on our horizon.
I would like to believe what you suggest, but it might be optimistic at this point. We all need to help eachother to survive this, as an entire species (including the rich people ofc).
Bad actors may use it to manipulate you or cause problems in other aspects of your life (HELLO data breaches!).
This is a hypothetical. Think about all of the normal stuff people could see about you on Facebook. Would you also want those strangers to have your other personal information and possibly passwords? How about your boss? School? Insurance agency? Bank? Someone who works at one of those places, and still remembers that information after they clock out?
Let's say there isn't a data breach. They also use that information to try to get you to click ads, even if those ads might be unsafe to click.
Please answer something for me. What is it that makes you think that Zuckerberg would act in your best interests? What would stop him from turning around, selling data again? How can you know that he will keep that data in trustworthy spaces, and away from bad actors?
I wouldn't even give my own parents access to that level of information unless I absolutely had to. I'm certainly not happier about a stranger having access to it.
The guaranteed way to fail is to not even try to succeed.
I mean, we have nothing more to lose if they are hypothetically going to succeed. What does it cost us to just try? Why are so many people against even trying, despite it requiring absolutlely zero effort from most of us? Why rush to submit to bad things before they happen?

Loblaws is FAR from alone in terms of being part of the cause. I work in food manufacturing for a very big company.
For at least two years in a row now, my company has held a large meeting to tell us that they are making record profits.
This company has its hand in a pretty large variety of products. If you live in Canada, the US, or Mexico, there is a very good chance that you have either eaten their products or purchased them. If you're from the UK, you've probably seen some of their products on shelves, too. For my job safety, I will not disclose which company, although it's probably not the one you're thinking of. They have a LOT of sub-brands, and I probably would have never made the connection between them if I didn't work with those products myself.
I agree that this goes beyond just Loblaws. Every rung on the ladder is trying to squeeze as much profit as possible. You have the ingredient manufacturers. You have the packaging manufacturers. You have the transportation companies. You have the food manufacturers. You have the retailers. Many manufacturing companies work with multiple suppliers. Every step adds more to the cost. Everyone wants their profits.
If companies throughout the chain decide to charge more, the cost can become compounded. My company sells to Loblaws. If my company charges new high prices, Loblaws' will use my companies new high prices as a base-line for their own profit goals. That 20% to 27% difference is likely from profiteering behind the scenes. Some of our products have nearly doubled in retail cost over the last 5 years.
I work at one company. I previously believed that it wasn't that big. I doubt that we are the only company to be like this within Canada.

English is used as an in-between language for many people. Other countries that exist also use English still exist. Australians can use lemmy. Canadians can use lemmy. People in the UK can use lemmy. So on, and so on.
Imo, those comments say more about the person who is upset. Variety is good, and communication is good. Assumptions lead to a lack of information, and that can make you look really silly. I'm not going to read CA on a Canadian instance and immediately think of California. An Australian reading on an Australian instance probably won't assume that WA refers to Washington. Clarification is important, and someone asking for it really shouldn't be all that offensive. The world is a big place, people.
Ehhh, I think it's probably more likely that you can't discriminate on specific factors like age, religion, sex, skin colour, etc.
I just can't see "most places" having laws that force you to deal with any and all aholes in customer service. Could I have a source on that, please? I have never heard of that before.
