Record-breaking mountaineer denies climbing over dying porter on K2
No disrespect taken. I'm sure she would agree if she could. Doing what people have been doing would have went against her core morals
Is the person you're responding to not also using their free speech?
It's ironic, because you're implying that they shouldn't make comments on their thoughts about this, because the thought of censorship upsets you.
Don't forget that complaining and critiquing are also under the idea of free speech, even if you disagree with the other person.
Genuine question, what would you expect people who were born intersex to do? How would you know whether or not someone is intersex?
Edit: They do exist.
My grandmother was an amazing woman who devotes her life helping others. She was a nurse who also volunteered at old folks homes in her free time, and she donated to many good causes. She loved the teaching of Jesus. Her dad was a WWII vet, and she cared deeply about treating others with love and charity.
She passed away over a decade ago, and while I still don't like the idea that she's gone, I'm happy that she never had to see this all of this happening. She would have been absolutely crushed.
I think they were more so arguing about the costs of the training itself. Those loans aren't free for a lot of people, and scholarships aren't unlimited.
A lot of people don't have time to work while they're in school, so those loans can also take on a pretty nasty interest rate.
I'm of the mindset that people who work hard deserve good money. If a job is something that most people can't or won't do, companies will usually have to pay more to encourage people to stay and do those jobs. Otherwise, why would people go into debt for schooling and training? Why go through the stress and expenses for no reason? Yes there's passion for some people, but that doesn't pay tuition lol
I would still try to fight for more than you make. It will be tough, don't get me wrong, but I think most industries are in this position one way or another. Everything is going up, and everyone has to eat. Why can't everyone make more, so less people suffer? The costs for everyone have certainly increased. A lot of these "record profits" should really be finding their way to employees, but they rarely do anymore.
With the "unskilled coal mine work" example specifically, I believe a big reason for their pay rate is the numerous immediate and long term health risks that are associated with it. Historically, mining has been a pretty fatal/dangerous job. They miners will probably need that money down the road if they get any of those bad conditions. It's certainly not a job that I would feel safe doing, nor is it one I would ever do for cheap. You should look into all of the associated lung diseases and ths effects that certain mined materials can have on the human body, especially with prolonged exposure. PPE can only do so much sometimes.
When I see people making more than me with less skill, I think "damn, I should be making that too". Why can't both jobs have good pay rates? Both would be nice. What a world we live in.
If you can, unionizing might help. It takes the company perspective from "we'll lose one great guy" to "holy shit, everything will crash and burn if we don't meet their demands!". I would also look into the laws in your area. Where I live, unions can protect you well before you actually create a contract. That knowledge was very useful to my coworkers and I a couple of years ago, because we previously thought that they could just fire us for trying to join a union (jobs are at-will here).
If you get a good union, the pros can outweigh the fees easily. They can cut right through a LOT of corporate bs, and they will usually provide lawyers for you if your company tries to screw you over. The lawyers mine provides are pretty top-tier.
Holy hell, I wish more people got this concept.
This reminds me of what happened at my last job towards the end of the lockdown. Previously, you started at a certain wage and increased a specific amount every 500ish hours, up to a limit. The last "raise" was only like 4 cents, but you still had to work the extra 500ish hours to get it.
Well, the company decided that they weren't paying enough to be competitive, so they suddenly raised everyone to the top rate. This put people who just started their very first job at the same pay rate as the people who had been there for multiple years. Their "solution" was to give the long term employees a one off, taxed, check for $200. To say that people were angry would be an understatement.
Personally, I think they should have just increased everyone across the board, especially after previously bragging about making record profits multiple years in a row.
IMO, when someone else makes more, it gives me room to also argue for more. Otherwise, why not go to another company that will pay it? Getting angry at the guy with the raise won't give you one. Inflation will still happen.
We don't clean ours as often as we probably should, but our fridge is also weird to begin with. It has this fun habit where it gets so cold that the top shelf will literally form ice, and that's if we have it on the medium setting. On the high setting, it turns into a vertical freezer lol.
It looks sick in the dark sometimes, because you can literally see the cold air coming out.
IIRC, there is also concern about warning generations in the distant future.
How might language evolve over only another thousand years? How much would symbolism change between now and then? Would a future society still recognise the current symbols as nuclear waste, or will we eventually forget about it, like many of human histories mysteries?
Is it actually safe storage overall, or is it only safe storage for half a century? Saving it for future generations to deal with would be wrong, imo. Will the the structure around the radioactive materials hold up to time, and is it safe from rising water levels? Are they prone to hurricaines or tornados, and will they be in the future?
So many things to find an answer to. I hope that we find solutions or a new method of power generation soon.
Oh, I wouldn't doubt that either
I think this might become more common over time.
Up to this point, a lot of the news company's online presence was probably pretty cut and dry. Some of my local news stations have terrible websites that take forever to load, yet those websites were probably cutting edge at some point. One of them has a layout that hasn't changed in at least 10 years.
If their IT department hasn't expanded their skills beyond making and maintaining those original websites, I could totally see a long delay happening before/if they join the fediverse.
Everyone almost always forgets to level up their restoration skill, too!
You have to have that restoration skill leveled up, otherwise you can't cast the powerful healing spells that might save you in difficult situations.
When I see clouds behind someone (especially in shots with angles like this), I tend to think that they are legitimate clouds unless there is obvious Photoshop. There was a very long time where natural lighting was preferred over artificial lighting for shots like this.
Why would someone go through the immense effort to make artificial lighting look like natural lighting when natural lighting is already there and it's completely free?
Are photoshopped clouds more normal than legitimate clouds now? Did I miss something?
I still want to know why these people care at all.
Personally, I don't even want to think about the genitals of 99% of the people that I've met. I honestly don't want to know, it has nothing to do with me. I'm more than OK leaving some things unsaid. I don't want to know. If you tell me your own gender or preferred name, cool, I'll respect that and leave it at that. You'll never see me asking if someone is trans. I won't push privacy, and again, it's none of my business unless it is.
Why do these people care so much about complete stranger's genitals? It is an obsession or a fetish? Is it just xenophobia?
The thought never even crosses my mind. I would be super grossed out if a stranger ever asked about mine, tbh. It's weird shit to judge an entire human off of, if you ask me.
If a strangers bits are important to you, you should really look into why that is.
Think of the art pieces as placeholders. It tells the system that you spent a million on art, instead of telling the system that you spent a million on illegal things.
Eh, it also depends on where you live. I don't know what it's like over there, but we have an addiction crisis where I live. People steal many odd things, sometimes because they like them, sometimes to sell them, and other times because they hatch a crazy plan that they give up on halfway through.
We definitely have certain people that are regularly kicked out of stores due to prior misbehaviour. (Assult, theft, biohazard stuff, etc.) Sometimes there's only so much that you can deal with from the same person, you know? It can get to the point where you just ban someone.
I would honestly recommend for anyone in another country to also use another source for news. Think about it, what would you do if Facebook stopped it all tomorrow, or shut down entirely? Would you still have access to information about the world around you to the extent that you do now?
Should you trust Facebook that much?
I think this is a nuanced situation. On one hand, the government let this slide for a long time, and too many people became reliant on Facebook for their news. I believe it's very important for people to have the ability to be informed on the world around them. We should be spreading awareness about these things for people who apparently forgot.
On the other hand, it's Facebook. Facebook is also not exactly known for being unbaised or truthful. Provably false things have no business being passed off as news, regardless of what side of the coin you're on. Information is power. We deserve the truth.
We can still use news websites, news apps, FOSS sites like lemmy, the newspaper, watch the news on TV stations, etc. Why are so many people acting like this is the end of all free information? It it really that difficult for people to find another source? I can almost guarantee that you can list 4 or 5 news outlets from the top of your head. If you visit their pages, they will still get their ad revenue. They never got that revenue before because of Facebook.
It's also another situation where people expect other people's labour for free. It's becoming grating. Why are we defending a billion dollar company expecting this from small local companies? Journalists have to eat, too. If it was an easy, time-relaxed job, everyone would be a journalist. It's almost irritating that so many people expect them to permanently lose out on their hard earned money for the sake of saving people the effort of a few different clicks.
Where is any of this anger or frustration towards Meta, the billion dollar company that refuses to pay for these articles? Meta could have negotiated, but decided to just shut it down instead. Why are we cheering on a profiteering company from the US over our own local news sources?
Some people will argue "they'll get less clicks now", but I'd argue that many of those clicks just sent people through an amp-website that mainly benefitted Meta. I'm kind of suprised to see these posts on a FOSS- heavy community, to be honest. I though not having one corporate overlord was kind of the whole point.
I agree with you. It's not like most of these trips are creating any advancements. People are dying so that other people can see a view and brag about it. What a terrible return for a human life.
I'm all for saving lives and looking out for eachother. That being said, many of these expeditions come with a dumb expectation that random people should also be willing to die. You shouldn't be able to intentionally do things for fun that you know will likely risk other people's lives. Many kids have lost their parents because of this.
I kind of doubt that the people who live there really feel like they have a way out at this point. Even if they found a way to be financially stable outside of this industry, I feel like a large amount of very selfish people would be angry that they couldn't go on these trips with the natives anymore. How could they stop people from showing up?
Maybe people shouldn't be going on a mountain that's known to be deadly if they know that they will absolutley need to rely on a guide to survive. Maybe people should be working their way up mountain difficulty, and not just starting at the extreme ones. People should also start to respect the danger of being on a fucking mountain.
So many of these deaths would have been avoided if these expeditions weren't a thing. If people can't do this safely without continuously risking the lives of others, we should seriously look into stopping it. So many families are permanently missing loved ones because of this industry.
