  • Additional fun fact, Kansas has in the past attempted to annex Kansas City, Missouri.

The metro area being split between MO and KS has also caused a race to the bottom for certain kinds of regulations and taxes because for many businesses the cost of moving between the two states was essentially moving from one side of State Line Rd to the other.

    Such a strange metro area.

  • Bold assumption that "we" (meaning the government) includes anyone actually reading this, because as far as I can tell the only "we" the government considers is capital owners. Unless you're proposing some alternate method of behavior alteration.

  • They've spent so long just saying that the government is terrible and useless. They've finally scraped together enough power that they're proving it.

In fact! We should thank them for showing us that government can be worse than useless, it can be actively malicious!

  • There is no help coming. The best thing to be doing now is logging out and getting structures in place to support your community.

Building community locally. Find the people doing good things around you and help them.

  • My former officemate grew up in Russia in the 80s, he hated a shitload about growing up in the Soviet Union. He raved consistently about two things: the education system and gender equality.

His mother was a mathematician and computer programmer, and he didn't have issues with school there until after he'd been here (the US) as an exchange student and had some... Cultural differences with his teachers.

"People who smile a lot in Russia are considered to be unintelligent"

  • Libs hate people like Hasan and Chapo cause they criticize Dems and Republicans while espousing leftist policies. They don't want to hear the actual solutions to problems because it conflicts with their worldview, and the donors don't like that.

  • This is how we end up in software my friend.

All the senior HW engineers I've interacted with almost cried when I told them I'd read the data sheets and schematics before asking them about some register values that needed to be set on boot.

    Love those guys.

  • I like propublica and democracy now, but when you start talking about foundations, it's hard to know, they're basically all funded at least at some point by a billionaire.

That's kind of the thing that happens at least in the US, you either are big enough that some foundation gives you money, cause you actually need a lot of it to exist here, or you are so small that you can't cover the kinds of stories the other guys can.

This system is designed such that journalism not ruined by the need to be profitable is relegated to the whims of patrons, much like art in feudal Europe.

  • I'm glad to hear this, I keep looking at it. I'm a little worried about the hardware requirements for it though. I keep putting off getting hardware for a dedicated jellyfin server (it's on my wife's gaming PC right now and it bugs the heck out of her)

  • I swear somebody said something about the "language of the unheard."

"IKEA furniture purchases are the language of the unheard"?

"Politely worded letters are the language of the unheard"?

"Petitions are the language of the unheard"?

    Ah, it'll come to me.
