Yeah, I'm a leftist and I find Islam as abhorrent as Christianity. I get that Muslims are a minority in the west, and so they're often unjustly persecuted. But that doesn't mean we should accept conservative nonsense just cause it comes from a minority religious group.

This reasoning goes all the way back to Epicurus. With regard to your latter points, Epicurus thought they were also solved by being dead. For someone to miss out on something, they have to exist in the first place. No person, no missing out. And for not existing to be bad, a person must be around to be upset about it.

I think most people who object to long sentences on here aren't doing it out of sympathy for these guys' political views.

People should be allowed to wear what they want. That said, nobody should voluntarily wear these terrible symbols of sexism and oppression. The literal religious purpose of the abaya and even the hijab is to promote modesty, with the rationale that men can't control themselves and it's women's responsibility to do that for them. Fuck that message and fuck the ideology that it perpetuates.

Maybe the police should focus on responding to noise complaints in a timely way instead of engaging in yet more surveillance? When I lived in NYC every noise complaint took at least 12 hours to get a police response. Sometimes they wouldn't come until days later.

That's the problem, it seems likely that this element of the constitution is toothless because nobody has standing to sue. It's just not clear who is materially harmed by his being allowed to seek reelection. (Except for the American body politic as a whole, of course).

I'm an adjunct professor. The only reason I have health insurance and get paid a reasonable wage is due to the hard work my union puts in. Non-unionized people in my position live on absolute poverty wages and have to work twice as hard to survive. Any young person who dislikes unions is a bootlicking moron.

Having lived in Bedstuy where a loud Muslim prayer happens every Friday morning, it's annoying as fuck and should not be exempted from ordinary noise ordinances.

These people saying one a week must be living in hell, but they're definitely outliers. I've lived in the same spot for three years here in Seattle without ever having a solicitor come to my door.
