The brutalizing effect is the opposite: by seeing this kind of violence, people are more likely to normalize it and engage in violence themselves. That's the hypothesis, anyway.
What did you get a degree in? I studied philosophy, so I did a shitload of very long papers and open-ended assignments that required a lot of reading, researching, and critical thinking. I feel like a lot of STEM students completely miss out on this element of college.
Got a divorce and lost my job. Spent six months eating 1500 calories a day, 600 of which were liquor, and walking five to seven miles a day. Hours of walking by the Sound in the rain every day. Felt like the only thing I could control was what I ate and how much I walked. Lost thirty pounds. I got a few compliments on how much thinner I looked. Didn't tell anyone that every pound was burned with hate.
Well, the simulation argument may not make a difference, but the free will one might. If nobody has the free will necessary for moral responsibility, then many of our punishment practices can't be morally upheld. If nobody deserves punishment, we should only use it as a means of keeping social harmony, and that means we should do it a lot less and a lot differently.
No, we should have kept Sherman marching and burning for much longer, shot or hanged every confederate officer, dispossessed and redistributed every southern plantation to the slaves, and occupied the South with federal troops for two generations. The problem with the South is that they were not treated harshly enough. Instead, they were left to reassert most of their old privileges and teach their kids how great their "heritage" is.
I love that it has soldiers throwing themselves under the treads of the death machine. AI can't help but make subtle threats about its quest for the domination of mankind.
It makes sense to spend some time away from it to reorient your life. And I guess some people live without it. But it brings a lot of positives if used in moderation.
The microwave is literally faster if you're just making one cup of tea. Why should I sit around for a whole kettle to boil if I can just microwave one cup for two minutes? Plus it's already in the container you're going to drink it out of. Absolutely silly.
This is an incredible view into the past. I had no idea that tenoctitlan was so huge and organized. Thanks!
