  • I am just curious, what were you using the floppies for? Configuration of some older piece of hardware? Retro gaming? Older backups?

    Cool guide!

  • This is largely just an interesting piece of trivia, but also somewhat notable because servers generally don’t federate content from before they were founded. So the older servers will have local copies of posts and comments from the early days of Lemmy.

This seems like a somewhat sane default, but it would be good if instances had the options to get all of the older historical posts as well. I don't think it would make a big difference for say LW.

  • FWIW, I did not have a single book with DRM issues. That being said, I don't have too many "hot bestsellers" or something similar.

  • Try getting in touch with the admin of https://sopuli.xyz/. He is supposed to be from Finland.

I've seen that instance recommended for European users.

Good luck with your move! We need to get rid of American oligarch influence. They are corrupt, dishonest and lack humanity.

  • Will stuff that they don't accept any old email address. Did they offer other major service providers (MS, Apple) of only Google?

  • Yeah, this is what I am refering to. Wasn't sure how to properly describe it. :)

  • Was hoping for a more detailed retrospective with nerdy discussion and technlogy history commentary.

  • I normally dislike "Fuck [X]" type posts, even if I agree with the sentiment, but I completed to make an exception.

    Fuck Elon "pedoguy" Musk!

It's too bad we can't send Elmo, his collaborators and sycophants right into the sun.

  • I was able to export (you'll have to remove DRM via plugin) all of my Kindle ebooks into epub using "Method 2a" of this guide:

It's can be a massive pain with some metadata issues, but at least it works.

I've been meaning to do this for years, but have always been too lazy.

  • You should run the common instance federation tool for your main communities.

  • Really need to give it a go.

I've been meaning to try Piefed for a while (heard some really interesting things about it).

  • I am really hoping they will provide at least 2 more years of updates for everyone (perhaps the EU can force them to).

  • A public forum (be it old school message boards, Reddit or Lemmy) is by definition not private. It's more about the policies of a given platform; whether you do allow algorithmic content targeting and other schemes to "drive engagement".

  • An x86 NUC works too. That being said, for CLI/DIY home server stuff I didn't really find any issues with software availability on Linux/ARM64.

  • One alternative option would be to get a Raspberry Pi (or similar SBC) and run it using command line only. You will quickly learn the basics of Linux internals (directory structure, systemd, common command line tools and approaches).

  • It was easy to figure out that their marketing around privacy was complete bullshit. If you read their privacy policy (the current one or say one from ~10 years ago), it's pretty clear they give themselves the right to collect everything and do whatever they feel like with your data. Sure, it's all couched in comforting sounding language, but that's just a ruse.
