  • I did have occasional issues with using a VPN and it was clear services were somewhat suspicious about me (very aggressive use of CAPTCHAs, additional login validation etc.).

That being said, outside of netflix (circumventing region-lock), I never had any issues with outright loosing access to tech oligopoly services.

  • Maybe, maybe not.

Google does have PR considerations to manage.

Not saying they are better, but it is one constraint on their behaviour that doesn't apply to system1/privacy one.

The fact that they are not very open about the acquisition of Startpage also doesn't inspire confidence.

  • Is it really that bad? I let my NordVPN subscription lapse as I didn't need it due to personal matters, I've heard a lot of good things about Mullvad and was considering them as my VPN provider.

  • It’s the Pravda of the VC-centric tech scene and has been for a very very long time.

A very interesting description. I only occasionally read HN via links from other sources, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of truth to your characterization.

  • Hmm, I've only seen it on desktop, guess the mobile view is messed up. :(

  • Yeah, the employees definitely don't give a shit about ethical AI or any of those PR talking points. They only care about their vested shares.

  • Thanks for the list!

One point I will add is that Startpage is actually owned by an American spamming company:

    https://restoreprivacy.com/startpage-system1-privacy-one-group/

I used to use them a lot before the system1/Privacy One acquisition, but then decided to switch back to google (never liked DDG's results, but might have to try them again).

  • Not just backing crypto, but actually taking part in crypto pump and dumps (they deny this, but that doesn't mean anything).

  • I agree with your general idea, but a16z is almost as well known as "Andreessen Horowitz", it's by this point their brand name.

  • Read this via another source.

This is how you know Google (and other gigantic companies) are little more than criminals. Not every criminal is a street gang member.

  • It's been a while since I used custom android kernels or even LineageOS (last used it on my Mi A1), but regarding this point:

However, I am unsure if I build LineageOS 21 with one of these custom kernels if I will be required to build each update with the custom kernel, or if the updater would update my build.

I believe you will need to stick to the kernel branch that you are on (i.e. wait for the maintainer to push out a new kernel), I don't think there will be any automatic patching that would account for kernel customization.

Apologies if I behind times and I made a mistake regarding the point above. :)

  • While I am a big supporter of having the headphone jack (I see no reason to have another device requiring charging), I feel like this is one smartphone feature that unfortunately doesn't stand a chance to survive in the future (I think SD card support has a somewhat better chance, but I could be wrong).

But yes, the headphone jack is a good differentiator relative to the A55.

  • I am also betting they will bounce back; hopefully this is indeed a good opportunity to buy the stock for cheap.

  • I would say a good base assumption is that all content on the public internet is scrapped and used for AI schemes.

It's the other factors that matter.

  • Assange isn't merely a journalist. He collobarated with russian security services and was on their payroll during his work on their "RT" initiative.

  • On Windows, Thunderbird requires the Protonmail Bridge application, it's pretty easy to setup. I wonder if this is even possible on Android.

  • I wonder how this compares to the Protonmail app. I use Thunderbird on desktop, might check this out if I have time.
