  • agree that the name is silly, it apparently also broke the tl;dr bot below

  • The French used to count in base 20 (so that means both hands and both feet), which is why they read 97 as quatre-vingt-dix-sept, ie 4*20+10+7.

  • Yeah, but I still think if (false) is silly because it adds an artificial constraint which is to make sure the disabled parts always compile even when you're not using them. The equivalent of that would be having to check that all the revisions of a single source file compile against your current codebase.

  • A simple if (false) will get optimized out by any modern C or C++ compiler with optimizations on, but the problem is that the compiler will still parse and spend time on what's inside the if-block and it has to be legal code, whereas with the #if 0 trick the whole thing gets yeeted away by the preprocessor before even the compiler gets to look at it regardless of whether that block contains errors or not, it's literally just a string manipulation.

  • correct, but will come up if OP chooses to study measure-theoretic probability theory

  • neither an understatement nor an overstatement, a Big-Theta

  • wait until you learn about sigma-algebras in measure theory

  • beat me to it too, it's a meme of course but the advantage compared to comments is thay you get syntax highlighting ๐Ÿ˜

  • laughing in #if 0:

    #include

    int main()
    {
    #if 0
            std::cout << "Look at this" << std::endl;
    #else
            std::cout << "ugly abomination." << std::endl;
    #endif
    }

  • It's because of marketing & blogging "gurus" giving advice like this: https://copyblogger.com/10-sure-fire-headline-formulas-that-work/

    The goal is for you to... click the headline when you see it in Google search results or elsewhere, so that they can then convert your visit to ad revenue when you see their ads and/or click on them or even buy stuff through their affiliate links (mostly the case when they link you to a product on Amazon) in which case they'll earn a commission.

  • OP's post is so cute, it reminds me of Lemmy 5 months ago when the Reddit exodus happened ๐Ÿฅน

  • In addition to all the responses here, one thing you could also do when you have a question about a distro is to just fire up a VM using for example VirtualBox and try the distro to see for yourself. Or even better, make a live USB and boot from it.

  • Is it usual that all the family and even therapists side against alleged victim?

    On the family conspiring against a single member part, you might want to look up Harrison Post or watch the "Britney vs Spears" documentary (though that's a bit different and doesn't have to do with rape, Britney was the rich person and her family conspired against her to take over her wealth, had a psychiatrist, James Spar, fabricate a report against her that subsequently just miraculously disappeared from the court files and even picked a lawyer for her who would side with them).

    Going back to this story, the "shht, let's not ruin the future of our child prodigy, so even if Sam did something bad to you you will keep your mouth shut" is not that rare among families. Conspiracies by families to cover up rape done by one of them do happen:

    Another very important point that makes Annie Altman's story highly believable is that since 2020 she's been resorting to sex work (and also begged on Instagram one day) just to survive, while Sam has a net worth of over half a billion. As I said in another comment, if one of your siblings needs to do sex work to survive while you have hundreds of millions of $s at your disposal, then no matter whether the accusations are true or not, you're the bad person and there's something fundamentally evil about you. Going back to the sex work part, here's what the statistics say (translated from German: https://www.rheinmaasklinikum.de/Inhalt/Patienten/_doc/Evangelische/Hintergrundinformationen_zur_psychischen_Situation_von_maennlichen_und_weiblichen_Prostituierten.pdf ):

    In Hamburg, 98% of sex-workers examined were diagnosed with at least one traumatic event. 83% had already experienced trauma in childhood (family violence 70%, physical abuse 65%, sexual abuse 48%). Trauma experienced during prostitution was found in 83% (physical attack 61%, rape 61%, threat with a weapon 52%). Here, 53% achieved an illness score in the sense of post-traumatic stress disorder. Abuse and dependence on illegal drugs at 74%. Similar alarming findings can be found in international comparative studies.

    And also (https://bmcwomenshealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12905-017-0491-y ):

    Intimate partner violence was experienced by 21.2% of sex workers, and 23.4% reported client physical or sexual violence. The majority of sex workers (71.2%) reported childhood (i.e., when age <18 years) physical or sexual abuse.

  • When you point out that figure, it's also important to provide more context and take into account the fact that Satya Nadella promised to hire every single OpenAI employee and not just Sam Altman, and the high likelihood that the board will not resign. It's not hard to imagine that for many, going to Microsoft and working in a for-profit environment with potentially higher bonuses (as they'd be more encouraged to seek much higher profits than under OpenAI) is a significant career upgrade (good for them, but the point here is to not let the headlines make you think that there's some warm & fuzzy "we love Sam" moment happening).

    The OpenAI salaries are pretty low (https://archive.ph/jPbYR ) compared to what Microsoft offers (https://archive.ph/nonSV ), and as I said all of that doesn't include the potential bonuses that would result from those teams aggressively pursuing profit at Microsoft.

  • Your "rarely" seems to be contradicted by the statistics:

    When methodologically rigorous research is conducted based on this definition, estimates for the percentage of false reports converge around 2-8%.

    • For example, Dr. David Lisak and colleagues analyzed sexual assaults reported to a major Northeastern university over a 10-year period to determine the rate of false reporting. Of the 136 reports taken during that period of time, 8 reports, or 5.9% were found to be false (Lisak, Gardinier, Nicksa, & Cote, 2010).
    • In a study of sexual assault cases reported to the Los Angeles Police Department in 2008, researchers found that rate of false reports was 4.5% (Spohn, White, & Tellis, 2014).
    • In a multi-site study of 8 US communities involved in the โ€œMaking a Differenceโ€ (MAD) Project conducted by EVAWI, data were collected by law enforcement agencies for all sexual assault reports received in an 18-24 month period. Of the 2,059 cases that were included in the study, 140 (7%) were classified as false.
    • Statistics even appear to converge internationally. In an analysis of 2,643 sexual assault cases reported to British police, 8% were classified by the police department as false reports. Yet when researchers applied the official criteria for establishing a false allegation, this figure dropped to 2%. These criteria specified that there must be either โ€œa clear and credible admission by the complainantโ€ or โ€œstrong evidential groundsโ€ (Kelly, Lovett, & Regan, 2005).

    So if anything, instead of trying to discredit her or mob-downvote every comment mentioning her story to bury her voice, you might probably want to reweight the odds and start to consider the fact that it's highly likely she's not lying.

  • Haven't experienced that so far (but that's probably because I don't log into my YouTube account anymore and mostly use private browsing), but I imagine that's something that adblockers will eventually be able to block?

  • Their UX is also incredibly deceptive. I've personally seen old folks trying to book on low-cost airline websites and they often believe they have to pay extra to get a seat.

  • it's like the OS version of the banana & nutella pizza

  • Iโ€™m pretty sure Elon can pay that btw.

    But that will involve more TSLA stock fire sales (as that's literally what he did the last time he needed to pay Twitter's bills, his "net worth" is mostly unrealized gains from his shares) and he will face more backlash for that from Tesla investors. His house of cards will collapse quicker the more he resorts to that as there's a limit to how long Tesla investors can stay patient with him treating them as his personal ATM.
