  • Totally.

Right-wingers don't hate Chinese authoritarianism ideologically, they just see China as a rival authoritarian regime to the one they want to create here that they delude themselves into believing will carry out their interests.

I've little doubt that if the fascist takeover succeeds, a third World War, that we instigate, won't be far behind.

  • Always remember what comes first in any national emergency. Whats the first thing our leaders always make clear when the chips are down?

"We will do everything necessary to protect our beloved nation society struggling citizens ECONOMY."

People don't matter here, only capital. If you are attached to meaningful capital, you will want for nothing and live in embarrassing decadence that would make pharoahs blush, if you aren't attached to meaningful capital, you are livestock for those that are. You are less than human in the eyes of the capital hoarders in charge.

Those are our American Values in practice.

  • No, but if we were a society we shouldn't play by different sets of rules, and root against other members of our society, which the mini-societies at odds with each other and rooting for each other's failures stokes.

We should either be 50 different countries not resentfully beholden to one another while competing against each other, or preferably one nation with the same communal rules and government to complain to and change with our combined democratic power. As it is, when California suffers, Texas cheers, and vice versa. That's a deeply broken nation at odds with itself.

This is just some broken, in-between limbo that's the worst of both scenarios. A house divided - by design! Good for monied interests to exploit and play against itself, think of Amazon starting tax cut bidding wars between states to build there, not good for the people en masse, the people that need their state's capitalist businesses to pay taxes for the commons like schools and roads.

  • Can we agree this state/federal "laboratories of democracy" bullshit is a failed experiment? Our framers were wealthy land owners who suggested land owners be the only class be allowed to vote, they were far from infallible, and their quarter millenia old framework isn't compatible with or flexible enough for modernity.

It just makes 50 societies often working against one another instead of one with common governance. This need for systemically enforced competition and disdain for the concept of cooperation is a self-destructive cultural value.

  • Honestly I think nation states are a tool of division and delinquency for the powerful, sociopathic few that work against their own species, so yes we should be.

We are one species. We just act like we aren't out of selfish crap hoarding. The idea that we're not responsible for one another is killing the planet and us.

  • Normally for a celebrity I would say no.

Jon is the exception, and I've often spoken about how he would be an excellent President.

He knows, has been involved, and most importantly is disgusted in that knowledge of how the sausage gets made. He knows how to appeal for public support to tear down the institutional obstructions.

Also importantly, I don't think he can be bought. He's walked away from cash cow gigs after he made enough. He isn't infinitely greedy, and that's rare in politics because most of them get into politics explicitly to be bought. I think his combination of institutional knowledge, understanding of today's social ills, demonstrated empathy, and ability to say no to calls of making moooooaaaaaar money make him the ideal candidate.

That's also the problem, because I don't think he'd want it, which makes him an even better choice.

That's the paradox of power, from police all the way to POTUS, the ones that seek it out and fight for it tend to be the worst possible candidates to possess it.

  • "If you're pre-born, you're fine, if you're pre-schooled, you're fucked. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers. Pro-life, these people aren't pro-life, they're killing doctors, what kind of pro-life is that? What, they'll do everything they can do save a fetus, but if it grows up to be a doctor they just might have to kill it?"

    -George Carlin

  • And of course Texans will make a point to shame these women, label them irresponsible, and demand they and their children suffer in squallor, because sex is the privilege of those with economic means and they need to pay dearly for disregarding that.

The Republicans must be drunk on schadenfreude from this. They don't give a shit about life, the rich ones wanted more desperate, unwanted capital batteries in the pipeline for exploitation, mission accomplished, and the poor ones just love watching people who aren't them suffer to feel superior.

  • As should charter schools, they're a market capitalist trojan horse to give what little funding is left in public ed to the rich. Some may claim to be "non-profit" but they all hire publically traded, FOR PROFIT charter management corporations. They steal the funding from public schools with each student to line wall street profits. And many of them advertise proudly how they preach greedy conservative ideologies.

Challenger Charter Schools advertises in my area literally with a student saying he was taught "to want friends that can take care of themselves." jfc

Pretty fake front end hiding the orphan crushing, for profit backend. The owner class uses charity and non-profit good will as just another vector for their con game.

  • This is the American enshittification we the US have been exporting since the Reagan giveaway to turn actual societies into piggy banks for the global rigged market capitalist owner class in their insatiable need for growth/metastasis, just as the US is. They only need a few people in the right positions to accept the faustian bargain of "You can live large, in decadence you'd never believe!... All you have to do is betray your countrymen and let us exploit them without mercy."

It works, sadly. There's always a few ambitious wormtongues in the right places willing to stab their neighbors in the back to get into the little sociopath club. The UK has long since fallen to this bargain, the French are fighting, but losing.

I fear for the last shining beacon of civilization when the market capitalist oligarchs succeed in destroying the Nordic societies with our unrestrained greed disease, then they can declare "there's no better way" without a prominent example to the contrary.

  • A couple of people that drive massive vehicles they don't need like Escalades have told me (former practicing psychologist) over the years that they know they are bad drivers, but they want to drive a tank so they can walk away from whatever accidents they know they'll cause.

Because practicing and improving their driving skills is apparently not on the table. The lack of empathy is unsettling. They don't care who they kill, they just don't want to be inconvenienced.

    Usually the affluent spouse type.
