  • Warhammer too. I don't have any proof, but my subjective experience leads me to believe that the vast majority of players/enjoyers of the franchise are right wingers, which is funny considering that a good amount of lore exists exclusively to make fun of them.

The same people who enjoyed Metal Gear Solid because it's a cool game about shooting the bad guys, I guess.

Heck, I once watched Starship Troopers with a friend, only to spend the following five hours arguing, because he insisted that the film (which is a very on-the-nose parody of fascism and militarism) actually makes fun of anti-fascists. I don't know how you can misunderstand something so badly.

  • Skyrim never "clicked" for me. I remember hearing awesome things about it: a vast open world full of things to discover, the ability to create my own character and build it however I wanted, the option to influence the world around me with my choices......

In practice, I found myself in a very big but mostly empty world, full of copy-pasted uninspired dungeons with randomized loot, and no matter what character I chose to build, the combat system sucks and the AI never tries to do anything more than mindlessly walk towards you (and get stuck on the scenery). I was never able to immerse myself in the world because everything was so drab and insipid: generic characters living in generic cities talking about generic things with a very bad dub.

Choices never matter because the game insists on spoon-feeding you everything it has to offer. You can roleplay as a barbarian and still become the headmaster of Hogwarts; you can side with the romans or the vikings but the world doesn't change aside from the uniform of the guards patrolling the cities you visit; you can ignore the dragons roaming the land and they never do anything, because they are just random encounters in the world without any kind of personality or goal aside from turning up and being a minor annoyance to the player.

The modding community is great, but even after spending a few hours installing a dozen or so mods, I was never able to escape the jankiness of the original game: it was still Skyrim, just with a different coat of paint (and a few less bugs and horrible UI decisions).

Reading about the overall reception of Starfield, I felt like I was going crazy, because everything the people say about that game, I already felt about Skyrim fifteen years ago. On the one hand, I felt like my feelings were being legitimized; on the other hand, I still don't understand why people forgive Skyrim (and still play it to this day) but hate the new Bethesda game so much.

  • Had a friend unironically trying to convince me that Palworld is evil because it brainwashes people into liking human enslavement and shooting at civilians.

His favourite game is Pokémon, a game where you bond with your fire lizard by pitting it against other animals in a government-sanctioned tournament.

Of course he's also one of those people who spends hours lamenting the state of current Pokémon games, while also buying both versions of each game at day 1.

  • Damn, thanks for letting me know. I've been using the Simple suite for years and even bought some of them because I wanted to reward the developer. I'm saddened by the news of the acquisition. I'll swap them with the new fork.

  • Sorry, I meant rounds, not turns.

Anyway, my figure comes from the DMG, which recommends three rounds as the average length of a fight. Your mileage may vary, but that's usually accurate in all the tables I've played in, and the few I have mastered as well.

  • I seriously don't get what you are trying to accomplish with this awful combo and why it would require you to rebalance the encounter.

    For reference:

    Hypnotic Gaze
Starting at 2nd level when you choose this school, your soft words and enchanting gaze can magically enthrall another creature. As an action, choose one creature that you can see within 5 feet of you. If the target can see or hear you, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your wizard spell save DC or be charmed by you until the end of your next turn. The charmed creature's speed drops to 0, and the creature is incapacitated and visibly dazed.
On subsequent turns, you can use your action to maintain this effect, extending its duration until the end of your next turn. However, the effect ends if you move more than 5 feet away from the creature, if the creature can neither see nor hear you, or if the creature takes damage.
Once the effect ends, or if the creature succeeds on its initial saving throw against this effect, you can't use this feature on that creature again until you finish a long rest.

    Create Thrall
At 14th level, you gain the ability to infect a humanoid's mind with the alien magic of your patron. You can use your action to touch an incapacitated humanoid. That creature is then charmed by you until a Remove Curse spell is cast on it, the charmed condition is removed from it, or you use this feature again.
You can communicate telepathically with the charmed creature as long as the two of you are on the same plane of existence.

A couple things stand out to me:

    • you are postponing your 8th and 9th level arcanum for a very shitty two-turns combo in a game where the vast majority of fights end by turn 3.
    • Hypnotic Gaze requires your wizard DC, but you dumped your INT because you are a Warlock. If you didn't, your stats probably suck.
    • Seriously, if you really, really want to thrall someone, just ask your resident fighter to deal a non-lethal blow when they defeat the enemy on turn 3 and use the thrall feature that way instead of... Whatever this thing is.
    • this combo is not broken and doesn't require you to rebalance your game in any way, shape or form. I'm in the camp of "I hate spellcasters because they break the game" and even I would not have a problem allowing this in my table. Your GOOchantment abomination could just take another level in warlock, learn Glibness and pass whatever mission-critical CHA check that way, or Dominate Monster if you want an actually useful charm effect mid-combat, or, I don't know, Feeblemind? Sure, this combo is technically reusable, but realistically, what monster are you fighting that's consistently failing a DC 14 WIS check at level 16? Like, is you really, really don't want your party to pull this off for whatever reason, just use a legendary resistance (or fudge the dice).
    • You mentioned using this combo for a villain? Warlocks also get Power Word Stun, and I doubt most of the party members have more than 150 HP at level 16. Again, combats in this game last 2-3 turns on average. Having your party member stunned for 1-2 turns immediately is better than having them charmed on turn 3. Or cast Maddening Darkness and turn everyone blind. Or pick literally any other spell in your arsenal. You are a level 16 warlock. This thing is barely passable for a level 3 midboss.
  • Personal opinion below.

It's a bit strange that only one has a fixed release date despite all of them supposedly releasing this year, with the biggest offender being Indiana Jones that only has a generic "2024" release date. That being said, they all showed glimpses of gameplay and different environments, suggesting there's at least a good chunk of the game already built. I could definitively see Indiana Jones being postponed, though (not a prediction, just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if it happened).

Avowed seems ok. I'm not a fun of first-person fantasy games (I like looking at my character performing sick moves in cool armour), but they certainly know what they are doing and the gameplay looks fun and snappy. Unfortunately, apart from the combat system and one limited character interaction, they didn't show too much of the gameplay to give me an idea of what the moment-to-moment gameplay will be, so I'll suspend my judgement on this one for the moment while I keep waiting for more info.

Senua's really good, but I never had any doubt about this one. It looked good when they first showed it a few years back, and it somehow looks ever better every time, despite this being the third or fourth trailer I've seen in as many years. It gives me the impression they really care about crafting as much a polished game as they can. I'm very optimistic about this one.

I love that they spent half the time dedicated to Secret of Mana talking about the cute critters. I loved every second of it, I'm a sucker for cute animals lol. Unfortunately I always find action JRPGs to be hit and miss: sometimes the game drags just too much and the gameplay ends up boring me before I finish the game. I'm not talking about this game in particular, it's just a generic statement on the genre, and it's just a "me" thing, feel free to disagree. Anyway, I'll keep my eyes on this.

I always love strategy games, so I'm curious about Ara History Untold, which I hadn't heard before today. I'm not going to lie, I was not entirely impressed, but it got me curious.

About Indiana Jones, I'm already looking forward to playing it, no doubt! I hope the focus will be on puzzles and exploration, as they promised, instead of combat, but I am hopeful they'll do a decent job.

  • Direct link: Xbox - Developer_Direct 2024

1:22 - Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed. Release date: Fall 2024.

They show the game's world, the combat system, and touch a bit on the quest system and dialogue options.

9:22 - Ninja Theory, Senua's Saga Hellblade II. Release date: May 21, 2024.

They talk about the story and theme of the game, show some cutscenes, and touch a bit on the combat system. They also delve into the sound design, and some behind-the-scenes about the setting and motion capture.

18:04 - Square Enix, Secret of Mana. Release date: Summer 2024.

They talk about the combat system, monster design, and show a glimpse of the mount travelling across the open world. The final segment is dedicated to the soundtrack, and how it changes to fit the moment-to-moment gameplay.

25:12 - Oxide, Ara History Untold. Release date: Fall 2024.

They talk about wanting to revolutionize the genre. They show procedurally generated biomes, and mention the attention to detail that went into crafting different cultures and societies from all around the world. The system is deep, requiring the player to explore and make choices that will change the society and the world around them to achieve different win conditions. No mention of Xbox, so I guess it's still a PC-only release, at least for now.

33:10 - Machine Games, Indiana Jones and the great circle. Release date: 2024.

Hey, look, Todd Howard makes an appearance. There's some cutscenes, but they show gameplay as well. It's a first person adventure game set between Raiders of the lost ark and The last crusade. Dr. Jones is shown exploring ancient ruins, vast deserts, snowy mountains and the Vatican, following the trails of a man who stole a relic from the Marshall College and fighting some nazis along the way. But they also talk about the puzzles, which will take centre stage. Seems cool. The last bit is about the behind-the-scenes of the animators and composers, and they also talk about the other characters that will be part of the story.

  • If nobody's stopping them, they're gonna remaster TLOU3 before even releasing it.

  • This hurts to read.

Their games were rough around the edges but sure as hell showed a lot of passion. The lore and attention to detail that went into their worlds were unparalleled, especially in the open world genre where lots of content is just generic copy-pasted fetch quests or mindlessly following the Ubisoft formula.

  • I was told that it'd be preferable to upload elsewhere and give a link, because otherwise I'd be uploading junk on Lemmy.world servers that they have to pay for.

  • Why only once? The best things always have a sequel.

  • Dude, no one here is shocked or angry. There are just normal people calmly discussing ways to bypass yet another attempt from Google to stop AdBlockers. If anything, you're the guy who spent the entire day yesterday screeching at people in another thread who don't want to pay for YT Premium, and is still doing the same thing now, in a community dedicated to piracy no less. You just deleted the vast majority of your comments because you were too embarrassed when people called you out for licking the boots of a trillion-dollars corporation and being angry at other people who don't want to follow your example.

Go touch some grass, it's free (just like YouTube!).

  • I'm confused about what you're trying to say, because none of those are YT alternatives.

TikTok is centered on short videos. Twitch is a platform for streamers, mainly for video game content creators. Curiosity Stream is a platform hosting professional documentaries and science shows, it's great but it has nothing to do with the amateurish nature of YT content.

All of those cater to a specific niche of YT (YT shorts, video game let's play, and science channels, respectively), but there's a huge chunk of content that doesn't appear on any of those services, but is present and thriving on YT.

  • Your argument falls flat the moment you realize an alternative to YT doesn't exist because all these bit corporations have spent years either starving off or buying the competition, and they are now happily enjoying the monopoly they have created.

I don't expect Google to ever cater to me, and I fully expect them to keep their war going against AdBlock. It's their job to make more money, after all. But the point is, it's their job, not mine. I'll keep doing what I think I rightfully deserve, which is, watch a few videos without the hassle of ads provided by the big corporation that has taken my data without my consent, sold it to the highest bidder, and made a fuckload of money off it.

  • I'm not a freeloader because Google is already making a profit off me by profiling me. They are just being greedy and asking for more. If you are happy donating your hard-earned money to the trillion-dollars corporation that's exploiting you, good for you. I am a sane individual and I'd rather put that money to good use. In fact, by donating to the WWF, I'm spending less money yearly than a YT premium subscriber, and I'm making someone happy that deserves it more than Google's sleazy investors.

  • I have a few.

PGR3, a Xbox360 racing game, contains Geometry Wars 1 and 2 as mini games. YT Link

Celeste contains the entirety of Celeste Classic (PICO-8) as an easter egg in one of its levels. YT Link

Xenogears, a PS1 JRPG game, contains a battle arena minigame, and I spent a few hours on that as a kid. YT Link

Machinarium's Gomoku/5 in a row minigame is so much fun, I played it with my friends at school when we didn't want to listen to our teacher :) By the way, I really recommend Machinarium to every fan of old school point-and-click games.

  • Google is already making millions by profiling its users and stealing their data. All these YT changes are not caused by them losing money, but by them not growing enough to please their (multi-millionaires) investors.

    (1) I'm not shedding any tears for a corporation that's big enough to have more money that I'll ever see in ten lifetimes.

    (2) I'm not paying for a "Premium" experience to allow them to keep profiling me (and thus gain more money). They are already gaining money off me, they don't need my premium subscription.

    (3) You should stop arguing in favour of exploitative big corporations that don't even know you and are probably actively exploiting you in this very moment.

  • Despite the cliché high school writing, I fell in love with the series playing the first LiS, but the ending was a huge let down for me. It was too abrupt and none of my choices up to that point mattered.

I wasn't able to finish BtS, too much teenage angst for me. One of the minigames in the first episode requires you to be a dick to your adoptive father for no real reason, and I get it, that's pretty much the point - Chloe was in a downwards spiral at that moment in life - but I just couldn't bring myself to play as her for the entire game. I liked her a lot more as a deuterantagonist in the first game.

  • Lord Soth is a lot shorter than I imagined.
