  • I was talking guns with an old guy at my last job, he said that everywhere in his house you are never more than 5 feet from a gun, he's got so many loaded and stashed around his house, just I'm case. I thought that was one of the most insane things I've ever heard. Dude really thought someone was going to clockwork orange them every night and he had to be ready for a gunfight at any second. Yeah it's life in the country and it might be an hour to a hospital and you gotta fend for yourself, but to assume that you're going to come under violent assault at any moment and have to be ready to shoot it out with anyone has to be extremely draining. It definitely explained his attitude towards others though, always thought the worst of things he didn't understand.

  • I will never stop being impressed by the absolute insanity that is British rhyming slang. Apparently I've never heard seppo before, short for septic tank, rhyming with Yank. I just learned a new mildy derogatory term for Americans, nice

  • You practically need tech bro money to afford a ticket though don't you? The article says tickets are up to $2750, and while I know they go for less if you get lucky in the lottery or something like that they're still like 800-1000$ just to get in. Who can afford that just as the entry fee, let alone what ever you need to survive the desert for a week?

  • 5 is the one with a lady yelling at a cat sitting at the dining table. 7 is the guy choosing between the two buttons Not sure about the others, Clearly common memes but I'm not hip enough to know off the top of my head

  • I remember spending weeks searching for a copy of it years ago, Q1 and Q3 were everywhere but I wanted to play the story of 2. I finally managed to find a copy but it wouldn't work on my computer. Getting remade as open source is great news

  • I worked for a guy who referred to it as "layoff by attrition" who essentially explained that they only have a couple heads over what they predicted based on production volume, and they know the conditions at the plant aren't nice to be in, 95° F and 50% through most of the summer in a stamping and welding shop. So instead of a tiny layoff or firing people they just wait until the people who won't put up with the conditions on the floor take care of it themselves.

  • I'm most excited for fusion power generation. Currently we can ignite a fusion reaction but it takes more energy to control and contain it than you get back because it takes a huge amount of electricity to generate a magnetic field strong enough to contain the plasma. The strength of the magnetic field is proportional to the current flow, which is limited by how much cooling is required to maintain superconductivity. Without cooling taking a huge chunk of the power created by the fusion reaction we could net positive energy from the reaction and finally have a clean source of scalable nuclear power.
