  • Russia likes to say they have a big and powerful military. The us likes to say "we have a weak military, please more congress money". Based in Ukraine, I think the us would win (if you can call it that) in MAD.

Also you are right that the anti ICBM capabilities has increased in each nation. Also each nation is increasing the ICBM nuke speed to render the anti ICBM ineffective. I hope we never have to find out beyond "theory"

  • Acid migraines are the worst if your family has a history of ulcers or acid reflux. Tums is 10x better that Pepto if that is the cause.

Those are the rose colored glasses that my wife uses. They are a general light preventative. (She can "relax" in public). Also concert earplugs like "eargasm" are something that allow focusing through the pain.

Sometimes nerve pain in the legs like sciatic can contribute as well. If you have weird "someone hit my funnybone" pain in your legs then you could look into neural flossing. Sometimes the pain in the legs cause tension all over which makes a migraine until everything resets.

    Good luck!

  • Ehh, it could sound that way (green washing). I remember an article from 1 or 2 years ago where Microsoft did a "pilot" test of this and the general consensus is that in a datacenter

    • while you fix part a you break part b of the identical server next to it.
    • Moore's law means that every 5 years or so you spend more on electricity and storage than you would for the smaller more efficient hardware
    • having 0 human interaction and 0 added dust and 0 oxygen and the ocean at 40 decrees farenheight meant that no additional cooling required. (Maybe some cpu airflow to the external 40° air)

Time (and investments) will tell if this is the solution to costly land based air heat pumps to cool datacenters with human interactions.

  • Well, I have a belief in God. I generally consider atheists "a-thor-ists" aka they do not believe that Thor God of thunder is the master of the universe (and any other definitions you found over the years). I respect the effort you put into searching and I also use the scientific method. Because you aren't currently searching, I'm not going to advertise. Have good fortune whatever you are doing!

  • My understanding is that they take a data center rack, stick it in a metal tube, then replace all the oxygen with an inert gas like argon, then sink to the bottom of the ocean. I think seawater is only exposed to the outside low tech metal.

  • Consumer reports.org

A search engine both indexes the internet then curates "relevance".

    • Mostly if I am looking for info, I'll go to Wikipedia or lemmy.
    • If I am looking for info about a purchase, consumer reports,
    • if I am looking for social media, lemmy.
  • MAD (mutually assured destruction) that nukes kill 70-90% of your population in 24-48 hours then kills most of the rest in a 4 year global nuclear dust driven winter. The UN has stopped 100% of the scenarios where Ww3 aka MAD happens.

  • All the key provisions of the antitrust laws (sherman antitrust etc) have been effectively invalidated due to the incredibly high bar set by court precedents before a large company or (making a monopoly or oligopoly) can be sued effectively.

As such the large companies can dance in an effectively no competition space (well some parts have competition still, but other parts no). Any small business with actual innovation is going to have to pay in competition, and inertia, and harassment by incumbent monopolies to get a hold, and the monopoly is most likely going to copy (Whatsapp to Snapchat) or acquire (Microsoft store to blizzard Activision). So any small business owner will get to look forward to bankruptcy, or lawsuits until someone else eats your lunch.

Write your congressman about the antitrust laws? Start a business and hope you aren't noticed doing something copyable?

  • There are 5 problems with this question:

Dating and marriage requires a "double coincidence of wants" where both you and your wife want to commit. (This is the whole reason that we stopped bartering because barting requires this for every transaction, and it sucks)

Your problem has a requirement of a quadruple councidence of wants: you, your wife, your friend, and your friend's partner need to commit. That is 4 problems.

Additionally you are over age 30. Once you pass that age, people are generally of the attitude of "relationship maintenance". So new friends are considered costly investments that have ongoing costs. (New Friends are neighbors or friends of your children/hobbies)

Here is a joke: why did Julius Caesar get stabbed? Because he thought he could have a friend after age 30.

Here is another joke:what miracle did Jesus perform that cannot be replicated? He made 12 sincere lifelong friends after the age of 30.

Loneliness is a contributor to early death and there are tonnes of products that want you to buy to alieve. Good luck!

  • I am currently part of a church that loves these types of questions because it means that I can bear testimony of God and bring the holy spirit into the conversation. I don't like doing so online with a profile that I try to keep somewhat anonymous.

There are two "science only" reasons for my faith:

    • outcomes. Everyone lives longer, has more education, has more wealth, has more kids, but stays away from self medication (alcohol, tobacco, caffeine) so a bunch are on prescription antidepressants. Umm "by their fruits you shall know them" and (last I checked) education in this church is the only one that is positively correlated with church activity.
    • pascals wager. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal%27s_wager

I have struggled with depression myself and have found the best solution is service. Church is a great "batteries included" way to serve. I also have a day of the week where I call up family and ask if I can help with anything. I was able to help my father in law renovate his house by making these calls.

Regarding politics. I hate political party "vendor lock in". I have no clue how any of the issues get discussed based on how much astroturfing and bought/compromised news outlets. I imagine that my interactions with politicians is like reddit's "upvote" where it really does nothing unless you sort by new. So I follow the money only.

Based on that, there is no "q&a" type of Fediverse software (a clear answer and a clear "voted best" answer).

Stack overflow had a huge number of "mod tools" to help curate the content (gold nuggets) given. They did not do the step of aggregating content (gold ingots) like Wikipedia has. The marking as duplicate could and should be tempered by "due diligence" or "age of the last time this was asked", but how it is implemented is up to them.
