  • I think Ontario has already paused the Export tax unfortunately. But I would absolutely call his bluff. An attack on Canada would mean a full-blown article 5 crisis before Trump has all of the cards that he wants. While he might be that stupid. Others in his administration aren't.

Just in case, a good show from Carney would be to deploy the military to the area because of an increased threat of terrorism.

  • This quote in an article from 2012 by Katie Billotte has always stuck with me.

This war on the liberal arts is born from the same desire that produces voter ID laws: a desire to limit democratic participation. The goal of a liberal arts education was never primarily direct economic benefit for the recipient or even the sort of personal/spiritual development about which many like to wax lyrically. The purpose of a liberal arts education was always meant to be a political education. The Latin ars liberalis refers to the skills required of a free man -- that is the skills of a citizen. The Latin word ars and its Greek equivalent techne do not mean art in a modern sense. Instead the word refers to a craft or a skill. Thus, history, rhetoric and literature were seen as the skills a citizen needed for his job: governing.

  • Trump is all about pretenses.

There are the "reasons" he's making those decisions, and then there are the "pretenses" he uses when the opportunity comes around to make them.

Swiss banks hold a lot of money from oligarchs and billionaires. Putin wants pressure put on them. But Trump has to find the "pretense" to do it so as to at least nominally not be seen as a russian asset. But what a coincidence, Lindt announces that they're going to supply Canada directly from Europe to avoid his tariffs. And BOOM. Pretense established.

  • I don't think we can change our base responses, to be honest.

I think throughout history we've shown that we can mask our tribal responses to maintain a veneer of civilisation. But that at the end of the day, that's all it is. It's a mask waiting for permission from someone like Trump to be cast aside.

I agree with you about tribalism being our greatest weakness. In fact I firmly believe that that is the ultimate answer to the Drake Equation. Their are no species capable of interstellar travel because the Great Filter of tribalism prevents any society from reaching the globalism necessary to ultimately achieve it. As an Archaeology major (a long long time ago, to be fair), the very tribalism that allowed us to dominate this world, is the same tribalism that will keep us ultimately from leaving it.

    • The BSG remake series is the GOAT
    • TNG and Voyager. (Never got into DS9...too much religious hibbidy-jibbidy and scenery chewing from Sisko...come at me, bro.)
    • Stargate Atlantis (And of course SG1, though on the whole I think Atlantis was the superior show)
    • Bojack Horseman (Because I credit that show for finally getting a handle on my own mental health)

And yes...I realise the hypocrisy of not liking DS9 because of its religious hibbidy-jibbidy, but calling BSG the GOAT. I have no answer for you. Maybe the Bajoran religion itself was just stupid.

  • "Parties" are inevitable just by simple human nature. It's the same reason cliques exist in highschool; We gravitate towards people we agree with and eventually (either purposefully or not) begin to align our decision making.

  • I live in a different city and often find myself wishing for my mother's Portuguese Salted Cod Casserole. It was out typical sunday family dinner when I still lived in the same city as them. Not a cultural tradition, just because it was my favourite dish.

But the nature of it ensures that I'll never ever ever have the patience to do it myself, considering that step one is soaking the dried salted cod in cold water that you repeatedly replace for up to 48 hours in order to get the salt out.

  • The US and Canada will never be the same again

As a Canadian I think, if we can weather the storm without Cheetolini going full "annex" mode, we'll come out the other end better; more diversified and secure in trade relationships, and stronger on the world stage.

  • It’s a very complex subject that is difficult to solve

In a sane world, I agree with you. But we're dealing with a man who himself doesn't realise its complexity and only understands strategies that are "blunt and absurd".

We can use as nuanced and soft-toed strategies all we want and he'll never get it through his orange head.
