  • I am getting really tired of these all these chucklefucks being in charge of things they patently do not understand. Modders are the modern lifeline of gaming. They work for free, fix your fuck-ups, and breath life into games that are years and sometimes decades old. Rimworld and Factorio both started their crowd funding campaigns in 2013, and both are wildly popular 11 years later, still selling copies. Factorio is just now coming out with their first expansion, and Rimworld just came out with their 4th. Neither Ludeon Studios (Rimworld) nor Wube Software (Factorio) have had ANY financial need to produce any other projects besides these games. Why are they so wildly profitable and evergreen? They both have rabid modding communities that have been supported and cultivated by the developers constantly fixing and expanding modding support to allow for an infinite variety of new content to be created for their games. Hell, the Vanilla Expanded team of Rimworld modders have actually turned it into a primary income source via Patreon.

AAA devs need to just sit down and thank these modders for tirelessly working on their games after release for free. Ever since DoTA became more popular than Warcraft 3, they all have their panties in a bunch and keep trying to claim ownership over all mods. No, bad developers smacks on the nose with a rolled up newspaper. God, it pisses me off to no end.

  • One of the most salient things I think I hace ever learned is that the US revolution against British rule was instigated by less than 1000 people of a population of over 2.5 million people, and it didn't have the support of more than 45% of the population at any point in the war. (https://www.nps.gov/teachers/classrooms/loyalists-in-american-revolution.htm)

Most people did not want the inconvenience then and proportionally 0 of them had any say in it starting.

  • As hard as it is and as much as I would like help, I am so happy to be the only Dev in my company capable of working on my projects and to have bosses who essentially give me carte blanch on how to code and deal with issues.

  • The trick is for a coalition of independent journalists to find irrefutable evidence of the connection in early September so it has a chance to cycle out of the news before someone smacks Trump with it in October. It needs to be new enough to be remembered, old enough to not be linked, and disconnected from either party enough to seem unbiased. It won't mean a damn thing to the right, but it might be enough for questioning moderates.

  • Only if you ignore WHY it has the ability to do that. The reason is the hydroelectric power plant, or more specifically the construction of the plant, required that they divert the falls for a couple years a LONG time ago. They have maintained the capacity to divert the flow of the river to ensure that they are able to perform maintenance on the plant and the various national park infrastructures around the falls. The seasonal diversions are usually to perform said maintenance as well as to protect parts of the power plant from freezing. It is actually one of the great engineering marvals of the early 20th century.

  • I am sitting here contemplating the wording for a sign that says something along the lines of "This house's guns are for dealing with fascists." Should still fall under free speach and not fighting words or threats since it is devoid of specific intent and specific targeting words.

They seem to think they are the only ones who have means for aggression, they are direly mistaken.

  • Yeah, that's why I used the heavy caveats. The wall produces an inelastic collision which will do WAY more damage as all of the energy is arrested rather than an elastic collision of the two vehicles in which a good portion of energy is spread between the two bodies as they separate.

  • Not all heroes wear capes. Seriously, this man is now enshrined in my mental halls of great men along with John Bannister Goodenough, whom I just discovered died last year. I'm going to go be heartbroken now.

  • One definition for a "rate of falling" would comfortably be "the time it takes the surfaces of two free gravitational separated by some distance to meet." With this in mind, the imperceptible but very real difference in the acceleration of the earth towards the bowling ball would become part of that equation, as it shortens the distance between the two from the other side.

Think of it like a head on collision of two vehicles. You can do the math as two bodies colliding with opposite velocity vectors, or you can arrive at the same mathematical result (at least for some calculations) by considering one of them to be stationary and the other to have the sum of the two speeds in the direction of its original velocity. "Two cars colliding head on at 60mph is the same as one car hitting a brick wall at 120mph." It is rough and doesn't work for all calculations, but the idea is the same.

  • The issue is the "your" imagination part. That is a huge limiting factor. Just because you can create a facsimile of something that functions does not mean you can derive hereto unimagined variations of them. You are assuming that the simulation bends to your will and reshapes itself to make what you want to be a reality, which is not in the prompt. Actually, the prompt quite specifically says that physics and biology remain unchanged by your attempts, so there is no just making shit up, it still has to adhere to the laws of nature and physics. Try to make a dinosaur now and it would suffocate in minutes because the O2 levels now are much lower than when they were alive. Attempt to make a cell phone that exceeds the fundamental quantum limits and it will burn out in an instant, or form a microscale black hole and destroy itself, jury is out on that one.

  • And yet, it is still actually illegal I'm every state. CSAM of any kind in any medium is legally identical. Hand drawn stick figures with ages written under them is enough for some judges/prosecutors.

Honestly, I am of the firm belief that the FBI should set up a portal that provides user account bound access to their seized materials. This may seem extreme and abhorrent, but it provides MANY benefits.

    • They are able to eliminate the black market for it by providing free, legal access to already existing materials, no more children will be harmed in the production of "new materials".
    • They can mandate that accounts are only able to be made by those actively pursuing mental health treatments for their mental illness. It is a mental illness long before it is a crime.
    • They are able to monitor who is accessing and from where, and are able to coordinate efforts with mental health providers to give better treatment.
    • They can compile statistical data on the prevailing patterns of access to get a better analytical understanding of how those with the mental illness behave so they can better police those who still utilize extra-legal avenues.

Always keep in mind that this is a mental illness. Often times it is rooted in the person's own traumatic past. Many were themselves victims of sexual abuse as children and are as much victims as the children they abuse. I am not, in ANY way, absolving them of the harm that they have done and they absolutely should repent for it. What I am attempting to articulate is that we need to, as a society, avoid vilifying them into boogy-people so we can justify hate and violence. They are people, they are mentally ill, they can be treated, and they can be healthy. It is no different than something like BPD, Malignant Narcissism, or Munchausen by Proxy. All can do real harm, all should face consequences of their harm, but those three are all so normalized at this point that unless the abuse results in death, most people will handwave the actions and push for treatment. Now I feel we have gotten too lax on these (and others) and are far too harsh on others. All mental illnesses deserve ardent and effective treatment.

  • I have this problem too. My wife gets so annoyed at things because I question things I notice as biases or statistical irregularities instead of just accepting that they knee what they were doing. I have tried to explain it to her. Skepticism is not dismissal and it is not saying I am smarter than them, it is recognizing that they are human and that I may be more proficient in one spot they made a mistake than they were.

I will acknowledge that the lay need to stop trying to argue with scientists because "they did their own research", but the actually informed and educated need to do a better job of calling each other out.
