  • It looks like Lèon is for sharing (outbound) links to others whereas UrlChecker handles shared (inbound) links. Is that right? Or can UrlChecker also scrub a link before I send it?

  • Okay, that new Inner Space looks interesting, but I totally meant the 1986 one with Dennis Quaid. 😃

  • While I would gladly take more years of him being alive, Carlin had gotten really bitter in the years before his death. Where previously his rage was playful and tempered with humor and wit, his later stuff was just angry. It was a disappointing change.

  • I'm glad that other posters have given you a broad sample of content, and nice to see a young person chime in. I've never used the parental info on IMDB, but relied on Common Sense Media for some guidance. It's tough to make recommendations based solely on age, not knowing you limits as a parent, etc. But with that said, I'll offer a little parental input on some (my daughter is 11, but she's also the third kid, sooo...).

    Previously mentioned things:

    • Doctor Who - man, I wish Jodie Whittaker had gotten better writing. Rosa was a cool episode to share with my daughter. Matt Smith's run would be my pick for younger folks. Some scary elements, but tame.
    • The Hunger Games - yes! As long as you don't mind all the killing. Highly recommend the books at that age too.
    • The Martian - I loved it and I think it's a good suggestion. I just wonder about the appeal to that age.
    • Ready Player One - fun, easy, excellent popcorn flick. My son watched it over and over.

Ones I haven't seen in the thread:

    • Firefly - Reavers are a bit scary for kids, and you'll probably need to explain Inara's job as a "Companion," but so good.
    • Jumper - Teleportation, man! Another good read at that age, too.
    • The Maze Runner - First movie was good, family said subsequent ones were not. Can't speak to the books, but they were certainly popular.
    • Men in Black - all fluff, but still a fun movie.

And finally, I'll close with several 80s picks that tend to skew a bit younger :

    • E.T. - duh.
    • The Explorers - kids building their own space ship. Goes off the rails in the 3rd act.
    • Space Camp - kids accidentally get shot into space and have to be real astronauts.
    • Flight of the Navigator - the kids liked this more than I expected.
    • The Last Starfighter - play game, be hero.
    • Inner Space - honestly haven't seen this in 30 years, but loved it when I was young.
    • Enemy Mine - human and alien stuck in a cave have to overcome their hatred.
  • I liked it. Authority was decent. But I couldn't finish Acceptance. There was just nothing in it that made me want to keep reading.

But yeah, not anything I'd recommend to people I know.

  • Just a few thoughts...

    • Lemmy isn't ready for primetime. It isn't meant to be at this point. It's very much a work in progress and for a lot of us, seeing the progress is part of the fun in being here.
    • Yeah, lemmy.world had some issues, but things have been pretty stable for me for a few weeks now.
    • I'm on Eternity, and no issues so far. But I'll keep an eye out when lemmy.world updates to 0.18.5. Again, this is part of the progress. Sometimes shit breaks. If that's a deal breaker for you, it's totally understandable.
    • I guess ultimately, it's just about what you're comfortable with. If you aren't interested in dealing with the issues that come along with early adoption, just move on. It's okay. For me, I've been breaking and fixing computers for almost 40 years. It can be a bummer when something doesn't work, but there are so many people freely giving their time and efforts to fix things that I can't really be mad about it. I know how it goes and that things will get fixed.
  • "Now, I don't know what I'm talking about, but I assure you, you can do it."

  • Please update if you remember. I've been digging through 1 shot videos, but haven't found it yet.

  • Haha. Last night my teen was watching the MJ halftime performance. She was SO offended that they cut the rap out of Black and White because "it's the only part of the song that makes sense!"

  • Start with the largest. Beat it up a little each day. Every few days replace with the smaller ones in a worse and worse state of decomposure.

Lots of money to just trash things, but you know.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • Not hard enough because the TV remote has never so much as shimmied in my direction from the other end of the couch, no matter how hard I try.

  • I drew a duck for my little cousin last weekend and she very quietly said "it looks like a butt." She wasn't entirely wrong and I started laughing pretty hard. She bolted and wouldn't talk to me again. I felt so bad.

  • Common if you grew up with HBO in the 80s and 90s, otherwise maybe not so much.

  • I recently had about $40 of Play Store credit that was inaccessible to me for weeks. Google support just kept telling me "Okay, wait 24 hours and it should be good now."

FINALLY someone got it straightened out, but during the course of it, I had to explain to support what Stadia was and why I didn't have a gift card number.

  • I think you should try Christopher Moore. Suggested starting point: Lamb.

Here's how it starts: six year old Jesus and his little brother are playing a game where the brother kills a lizard with a rock, then Jesus puts it in his mouth to resurrect it.

His humor is irreverent, absurd, and constant. The stories are all grounded in the real world though, so you won't struggle to understand lore, settings, or language. Very easy to read.

  • This seems like an unfortunate name for a mobile app that doesn't have anything to do with notifications. I mean, I get what they're going for, but I don't think it quite works in this case.

That said, the app looks nice and I'll give it a try.

  • I just finished up The Ballad of Songsbirds and Snakes. Back when I read The Hunger Games trilogy, I flew through it and really loved it. This was a nice successor/prequel. Collins really knows how to keep a story moving and she did a nice job laying groundwork for decisions made at the end. Maybe a little too obvious, but consistent anyway.

This weekend, I'm hoping to get through a Jack Reacher book I started on Kindle one night when I couldn't sleep. And then it's on to Caliban's War as I continue The Expanse saga.
