Yeah, me too. Though I was taken on by the whole "radical liberal left being oversensitive" thing. I thought of women as equal, but the "femimazis" were extreme. I thought non-heterosexual and non-binary were a bit odd, but they can do what they want, why should I care, but I was the "LGBT propaganda" was too much. I thought people fleeing from wartorn regions deserved another chance, but the "sjws are just letting anyone and everyone in, and they can do whatever they want because otherwise it would be racism".
I would call myself right wing, but practically all of my opinions were very far from it because my youtube overloaded brain thought that the "left" were just a bunch of idle people getting looking what to get offended by today. Only later at uni did I find out how overblown the whole "SJW" youtube thing was, and how much more insane and damaging the other extreme was.
And I believe that this is very much the case, people in school aren't "right wing" because they carefully thought about life and society, but because all they hear about the "left" is this comically exaggerated notion that they're touchy freaks who just want to scream how they're oppressed by everything. Ironically, what got me out of the stupid right wing youtube company was left wing youtube with hour long videos exposing how that "SJW" narrative is just manipulation. But by the time they make one long detailed video exposing some false story, 1000 more of them pop out.
Honestly, the large portion of the internet is just poisonous, especially youtube. The sooner people learn to think and examine sources (use the internet), the better off we're all be.
"On the Shortness of Life" by Seneca, if we can call it a book. The claim that "life isn't short, we just waste most of it" was not by itself that impactful until he started listing examples, among them Caesar Augustus. You can think what you will about him, but nobody can say that he was a lazy man sitting around doing nothing. And yet Seneca shows that Augustus in his "productive" life spent a lot of time complaining how he wished he had more free time, and so he didn't really "live" all the time, just like someone who wastes their days drinking and gambling and whatnot. And the idea that a man who immortalized himself in history for all times "wasted" most of his life was really not something that ever occurred to me. I recommend it to everyone, it's short and written in simple language.
They make me feel better in general, always, don't really know why. There's something cathartic in dark songs and tragic stories. Maybe it makes me more familiar with negative stuff, so it doesn't pile up over time and then collapse suddenly. Then again, I don't think I can name 10 songs I listen to often that are happy or positive in any way, so it might be just something I'm attracted to.
Special shout out to Dark Funeral with their songs When I'm Gone, Unchain My Soul, and the very direct My Funeral. These may seem distasteful on their own, but I find them quite calming and relaxing with the music.
Oh I know the pain. My nasal septum deviates to the left, so I can barely breathe on that nostril under the best circumstances. If my head isn't tilted to the left, the left nostril might as well be filled with cement.
I held a carrot in my left hand, and tried to cut it along its length with a knife in my right. As I pushed with my right hand, and pulled with my left, the carrot split in two in the middle and one end of it went straight under my fingernail. It hurt.
From that day onwards I cut carrots like a normal human being.
I don't think anyone's claiming that wireless headphones do not have their place, instead that there's no reason not to have the option to use wired headphones on a phone because they're much more reliable and durable than wireless.
Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle and The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andrić. I always go over two books at the same time where one has heavier material (philosophy/history) and the other lighter that I can read when I'm tired.
We had to do a presentation in the first year of secondary school, and somehow I ended up with Linux as my topic. I found it immensely interesting after doing the (admittedly limited, but hey I was 16) research, and decided to try it out after I found out that I can have both Linux and windows at the same time.
Long story short, I loved the sheer choice of distros, working with the terminal (which is so much easier than GUI working for a lot of things), how looks can be insanely customized with so many desktop environments, how you can install all (okay, most) packages you need from the terminal, how the updates are all handled by the package manager, then I found out about free and open source software as a concept and so on and so on.
Now I have only linux on my laptop, and windows on a desktop for gaming. Once you get used to it, it's honestly very awkward to go back to windows.
Oh I agree, any plant is pretty much an afterthought in a lot of cities, while they should be an integral part. The situation in my city is actually a perfect example of that: they put absolutely no thought into what kind of tree they're planting, how deep and where. They're practically an "addition" to a street.
Trees are especially important for blazing summer days when they provide shade. Walking down that treeless street is hell.
But it wasn't a sidewalk issue, the roots were like 20cm above the ground that was on the same level as the entrances to houses (the city is completely flat). And that's a huge difference, infrastructure can be fixed in a couple of months, trees need decades to grow, which is why we need to be careful when selecting and planting. But alas, that's not guaranteed at all as long as we view them as "a thing you plonk on a street and call it a day".
My city had a problem in a street near me where they planted the wrong type because the roots of the trees were popping up everywhere. They absolutely destroyed the sidewalk and every bit of concrete around them, as well as falling over during strong winds, to the point that one tree destroyed someone's roof. Eventually the city cut down every last one tree along the entire street, and planted new ones.
People need to be careful with trees, they're not a flower in a pot that in the worst case dies and you buy a new one. Besides the damage that was inflicted, the street looks terrible now with almost no shade and small trees that will take decades to grow to the point where the old ones were.
I thought the itchiness was due to your immune system reacting to the saliva. And as you scratch it, you cause additional inflammation which causes a bigger response and thus more itchiness.
Whatever it is, killing it with fire works. Though I got a bit carried away a few nights ago and I have a burn mark on my leg now. Be careful kids!
It depends on the workout for me. When I'm in shape of course, if I'm not in shape then it's hell.
Running 4-6km is very neutral, nothing special
Running 6-10km is kinda enjoyable
Running 10-15km feels really good for some reason
Then everything above 15km is hell (I only ever ran a half marathon at once)
I find running a bit like meditation, or I just let my mind wander wherever. I can't really put to words the experience, but I would definitely describe it as enjoyable. Especially in winter, I absolutely love it when the cold bites my skin as I start running, and then when you warm up you don't feel it anymore.
