  • This is the sad part. It's not the first and not the last time Israel has acted like this. Still, this protest is putting the media's waning obsession with Thunberg to good use. 👍

  • You say that like it's a bad thing. Yes, this is political activism. Cameras on Thunberg, ready to document in real time how crazy the Israeli government is.

Ther's also the socio-emotional support for Palestinians. It's not just about material aid (though that is extremely pressing today).

  • Something is wrong with this article. It seems strangely obsessed with Thunberg smiling at some point (mentioned several times in the article, with a well-timed shot that makes her appear to smile at a soldier handing her a bun). It acknowledges that the boat was seized "near Egypt", but was it in international or Egyptian waters? Surely that would have been an important detail that any real journalist would like to include? It uncritically cites propaganda points handed out by Israeli officials:

    • the journey was a publicity stunt ("selfie yacht"), not a protest
    • equating the protest as a whole to Greta Thunberg as a person. I had previously mentioned how I enjoyed that the organization did not boast about her participation.
    • Thunberg was more concerned about her ego than about handing some "meagre" aid to Gazans. Yet the aid was confiscated.
    • and the classic: supporting Palestinians means siding with Hamas terrorists.

I had to downvote OP because they could've chosen a better source I'm sure.

  • But then the AI just looks up the definition of 13, and the definition of 7, and should be able to answer anyhow. I mean, this is how computers work. Are you sure that's what the other commenter was refering to?

  • Any type of "who's the best" question is unlikely to succeed. Even if you have sports competitions to back you up. But with such a vaguely defined topic? Sorry.

  • What about Russian? Serious question; around here it was a relatively popular choice (we share a border with Russia) one or two decades ago, but I suspect this might have changed recently.

  • frankly a minor, tangential part of the OP

    No, it wasn't

    with an essay

    Hyperbole

it does come across as heavy-handed

    What does that even mean?
"I took your question seriously and attempt a serious answer" == "heavy-handed"?
    "I don't agree with all your points" == "heavy-handed"?
Seriously, what does "heavy-handed" even mean here? It seems to imply aggression?

  • "challenge" (with an informative explanation) == "grill"

Thanks for clarifying which sort of internet user you are.

  • It's a good question and I'm not dismissing you! But

As an American who grew up at a religious school in the 90s, we absolutely did not

that in itself is such an American thing to say. First the unspoken assumption that everybody understands what you mean by "religious". And if I looked around here where I live I'm sure I could find a christian (which btw does not mean the same as in the US) school that teaches chinese. And probably even the leaders of such schools have never considered to separate languages into "christian" and "non-christian".

The second half of your question seems a bit paranoid. Are you implying that every Chinese language class is secretly funded by the PRC? Are you afraid that your country might switch to Chinese at some point? Do you have a problem with English not being the No. 1 langauage, globally? I'm no friend of China's political system, but this seems excessive.

  • They really should. If you applied all the logic of, say, food labeling laws in the EU to the internet, we'd have very different laws around it today.

But somebody shit into clueless politicians brains and told them it's different because it's the internet.

    ...

Hmm, actually it is different - as in more difficult legally - because it's global, but that's no excuse to do nothing about it. The software would've been up to it even in the early days.

  • Something similar once happened to me: she was my girlfriend, I did something really stupid, the relationship ended. I tried to contact her almost 10 years later, wanting to apologize, but never got an answer. She probably thought I was being creepy. I still have mixed feelings about it but:

"It's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done"

  • I remember actually picking one up once to tickle its belly 🥰 but they're usually infested with lice, and anyhow it's probably not something one should do to wild animals.

  • They're shocked by the speed and extent, not the mere fact that Trump is doing this. I'm sure "top climate experts" have been warning about this in general and Trumpism in particular for many years.

    As am I btw.
