  • You're right. Words like "I" are gender neutral.

For that reason, speaking in the third person like Bot is doing doesn't make sense to me (as a trans person myself). I can't think of any motive for someone to want others to constantly refer to them in the third person... Except for one, but it's controversial in some communities haha.

Looking at Bot's comment history, they only decided to speak in the third person today, while the rest of their account's comments are written normally. Do with that information what you will.

  • Well, one instance of it was on their main account, so it doesn't matter that much. (Sry about the SC quality)

I wasn't the one who issued the ban so I can't say for sure, but IIRC the reasoning was that both accounts spoke in Drag's unique way. That and by all appearances the account seems to have been made specifically to harass a user Drag was beefing with at the time.

  • Not really. The "funny" parts were all speculation and jokes from the public. The whole thing is actually kinda sad.

After losing to Hans, Magnus suspected he was cheating so he withdrew from the tournament and released a statement implying Hans was cheating. (Which isn't an unfounded claim, because Hans admitted to cheating in a tournament when he was 12, and again in a casual match when he was 16). That led people to ask how you cheat without a phone/computer... And that led to the vibrating anal beads meme.

So now everyone knows Hans as the anal beads guy, and everyone wonders if he's still a cheater. The accusation did irreparable damage to his reputation and mental health.

Personally, I doubt he was cheating. I'm sure Magnus has a more analytical view of the match, but not even Chess.com can prove he cheated, so... IMO the case against him can't be all that substantial. To me, it seems like he was probably being a sore loser and used his power in the chess world to leave permanent scars on his opponent's career.

Edit: I mixed up Magnus for Hikaru 😬 But iirc they were both making similar implicit accusations.

  • Pretty much all popular image generating models are based on countless artworks by real artists, which were used without the artists consent.

My art is also based on countless works of real artists, and I didn't need their consent to put pen to paper (or tablet, rather). Media like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Goodnight Punpun and Majora's Mask taught me how to incorporate surrealism into my work, and I don't need permission from those creators to use what I learned in my game.

If I tried putting Courage, Punpun or Link in my game, that'd be a different story. And when generative AI companies do that, that's also a different story... But I have to give credit where it's due, as much as I don't like OpenAI they have done a better job at complying with copyright law better than YouTube. I've even had ChatGPT refuse my prompts when I'm not trying to get it to generate copyrighted material.

I do agree with your other points though, and I think we'd both agree that machine learning is a net negative for the world. I'm not on the side of big corporations, I just don't think this argument is really good for anything except getting people emotionally charged.

  • By "asap" I didn't mean any minute now. :p Rest assured we wouldn't make such a big change without at least telling you guys outside of a comment on a random post. And I agree a poll would be a good idea.

And apparently I was mistaken about some things, so I've deleted my comment. Until further notice, just disregard what I said. Any major changes to 196 will be announced by the other mods, probably through a sticky post.

Edit: Since I deleted the last post I'll clarify here, too, that we weren't making any major changes due to the neopronouns thing. It was just something I saw being discussed a good while ago and assumed it was still underweigh.

  • (Not sure if I'm supposed to say this yet but screw it):

If it's any consolation, for a good handful of weeks we've been planning on moving 196 to lemmy.world ASAP... but to tell you the truth I'm not sure how soon that will be. It's tricky, but we're working with the admins of both instances to figure it out.

Edit to clarify: We're not moving because of the "neopronouns" thing.
