  • I was and am in a situation where WFM became voluntary because we outgrew the space while everyone was at home.

We have no limit of volunteers to work in the office, we have multiple people who never left the office, they continued to commute and went in every day.

So my anecdotal experience is the exact opposite of yours, which is why we don't put a ton of stock in them and look at aggregates in studies. Making sense?

  • I love how everyone talks about how nice this guy was. He goes to Africa a bunch, huh? I bet this guy was one of those death-to-the-gays type preachers who go to African countries to preach psychopathy. He's nice to everyone he likes, and wouldn't hesitate to kill someone he doesn't.

    Super nice guy!

  • I don't think anyone who mentions that honor killings are a thing is saying that. Honor killings have been recognized by amnesty international as being a distinct threat to women worldwide that is present in America as well specific to Muslim majority countries in the Middle East and Asia.

I think any child has the potential of being killed by their angry parents, it's happened very frequently from people of all backgrounds, but it's ok to admit that a Muslim girl who doesn't want to introduce you to her parents could be motivated by the fear of death or abuse in a very specific way. And i think it's ok to tell this kid that this is a possible additional pressure based on her culture.

But it's fair to say this has happened like a half dozen times in the US in two decades. That might feel like a lot, but considering the sheer number of Muslims who live in this country, that might as not happen at all.

I can keep both of these ideas in my head at the same time and not have a weird, knee-jerk meltdown in the comments!

  • Trucking is so funny. There is an adversarial relationship between the drivers and the office, which you can see in this comment.

The industry is trying to solve safety issues caused by the nature of long haul driving and maintenance of profit in logistics by companies that use their services.

Trucking used to be a way a person could provide for their family, remain independent, and feel in control. Now, trucking is an industry where you are trapped in a moving computer designed primarily to reduce the insurance rates of the company that employs them, because their business practices and demands were so dangerous, individuals truckers had to drive more hours, get paid less for those hours, and literally drive themselves, and other motorists around them when they crashed, to death.

Then they blame the truckers as they race to bottom in hiring. Don't even get me started on nafta. Your industry sucks for the employees who are necessary to keep the economy moving.

  • Totally fair, despite the vitriol and glibness of my response. But man, as you mentioned the railroad was a big fuck up. Speaking of shitty situations for Palestinians... East Palestine Ohio happened like 2 months after he made the rail workers go back to work, and it was one of the exact problems they were striking for. That's directly on his hands.

  • Oh weird, so it wasn't a constant stream of weapons provided with stamped approval by the admin? It wasn't that the only time they threatened to stop it was only a very specific type of heavy bomb, not any other munitions? It wasn't the Biden admin who initially rejected the terms ceasefire until deep into the conflict? It wasn't the Biden admins ceasefire plans that were accepted and abandoned by Trump, proving that if they had provided full throated support of those plans it could have very reasonably happened a year sooner?

Best thing you can say about this fuck was that he was the white guy they used to get Obama elected, cause they figured no one would vote for him unless he had a token cracker.

  • This seems so dumb, like people have simply put names to the typical tropes of online conversation, it's a very typical meta discussion that you don't seem to want to engage in, so why waste the time?

Your solution doesn't make sense, just take things less seriously! Are you the fucking Joker, this is serious shit. It only works if there are more likeminded people who share your "logical" opinion. If your solution is to always just overshout, you are agreeing to the will of the majority, which we call the tyranny of the majority in the United States. What happens when the majority you picture yourself as flips to the minority in the argument.

Congrats, you've just lost everything! Welcome to 2025. A zero sum game where if someone asks a genuine question with good discussion, people are going to come in to try to flip the table.

  • This is my opinion, most people think nothing about not spending on a business that has right wing opinions, because they see them as harmful.

The developers of Lemmy and .ml are packaging arguably (for many, this is just an opinion) harmful rhetoric into their free platform at base with their moderation. The one developer that has tried to distance themselves from thar rhetoric, can't help but engage in it when pressed.

Frankly that's a fucking propoganda tool, and if throwing away .ml is throwing away Lemmy, then I hope someone forks the project and continues development without the baggage.

I'm not responsible for the developers shooting themselves in the foot with their opinions, that's on them!

  • This is some of the most incredible finger in the ear bullshit I've ever seen. If ya'll don't recon with the failures of the DNC and just try to shove them down the memory hole, you are just gonna get the same fucking shitty candidates with compromised primaries.

Look at this news, understand that the Biden admin was lying about trying to end an active genocide, we should demand much better. Keep in the top of your mind how feckless and cowardly the leadership was while staring down the barrel of a potential Trump second.

Ya'll are totally ok with losing some sort of moral high ground you weren't ever on, as evidenced by this story. Fucking callow moderate liberals are a curse, ml is right about that.
