  • Well... posting yet another article about Biden not being good enough (and we have peoe who do it like it's their job) isn't helping.

It's just not. It's way single minded and not only is it not helping, it's hurting.

We have options. You have options. Complaining...? On lemmy??!? No. That's not changing Biden's mind. Its reaching all 100 people who see these things.

And it's not our job to tell people with the maturity dwarfed by juveniles how the system works.

This is not organizing. This is just draining and wasting energy. Use your energy for communication. Whinging like all that we see here? Isn't effective communication.

But articles are what we must post. Not get out the vote, not how to move things left... We post click bait anger inducing, energy draining things.

    We need something different.

  • Home Assistant is open source, privacy oriented and working to make local non-cloud, non-Spyware) the norm.

It's getting easier and easier to adopt and matter devices avoid cloud silliness.

  • I've ordered gizmos that will work with Home Assistant to replace my minis. I'm working my way off Gmail...

I'm seriously de-googling. Apartment uses a nest thermostat, but... I may be able to get that far.

Matter devices help in many ways. De-clouding is one.

  • They only spoke to trends. No endorsement of an ideology.

You inferred, then implied in your question. It's a classic miscommunication, but it creates hostility and can seem like operating in bad faith.

In life's great big does-this-matter-heaps-a-tron... Not a lot. But I'd hope lemmy can avoid the reddit instinct to be contrary or begin by assuming a person is wrong.

  • Agree.

My general opinion, at this point:

    • Ukraine has shown and singalled that without help, the lines will be moving in the wrong direction.
    • If they get their borders back (win), Russia will have a strong argument that the war was with the West, not just Ukraine. And I don't know that Western politicians have the stomach for that kind of win, because the nuke thing, if nothing else.
    • The pols may be open to it, but even when there was less push back, I didn't see the will to win. It was the will to not lose, and then trust Ukraine had what it took.
    • At this point I think we know that Russia and Ukraine will have a massive generation-size gap in their male populations. And at the end of this, absent significant help, will be a slow war of attrition with Russia moving lines often enough to matter.
    • Anything short of restoration or either historical border is a loss. At least of land and lives, if not other.
  • halt Russian advances

This is my point. If Biden had an unlimited arsenal to send I think he would think twice about doing so.

Because nukes. We aren't disagreeing here, I don't think.

Regime change happens when Putin dies and it may not improve things. Trump is more likely to win than we are to see Putin toppled.

Edit: I was never talking NATO boots on ground. That seems like fantasy when we're struggling to provide them with ammo.

  • My recommendation is to buy an RPi, SD card, and Mater devices as much as possible.

Voice is possible on Home Assistant and it will only get better. The devs, like many of us, prefer privacy and local control/storage.

There's a way, it's just not the path the author chose. The better path has only come about in the last year or so, tho.

Fwiw: you can tie the voice stuff into OpenAI and ask questions. It's no longer local and each query costa fraction of a cent... But if you feel like you need that, it's there.
